The guy who plays chuck in the opening is perfect. Exactly what a young chuck would sound like. I'm fairly certain that scene is the very first scene in the breaking bad universe chronologically
There was the flashback of Mike and a young Matty working on the concrete outside their house.

Michael McKean was also great in all the mockumentaries he was in, i.e. This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind and others.
@@ZenShroud1 Chuck and Mike are similar ages, and in that scene Mike is a grown adult with a young son, whereas in this scene Chuck is still a teenager
These little things are what makes this show so great. It's just some random child actor that appears in like 1 scene, but they still went out of their way to make sure that you could tell that it's Chuck just from the way they talk.
It's so visceral the moment of Chuck kicking to make the lantern fall. It's eerily similar to someone wearing a noose and trying to kick out a chair beneath them. With the lantern we don't quite catch as viewers what his plan is until we see the flames
Incredible writing. You really can sense the accumulation within Chuck right after that action..the execution was crazy.
The way Jimmy says "I can change" when Chuck is putting him down will always hit me, it's so innocent and almost childlike in the sense that a big brother is pulling a little brother down it's so heart wrenching man. Chuck's complete deterioration in that montage sequence is in my personal opinion, one of the most upsetting depictions of someone succumbing to their mental illness in a show and probably the best sequence in BCS, it just feels so real in a very compelling way, like I was watching it through my fingers the first time it was that stressful.
Yeah like you know Jimmy gets into trouble and he has his flaws but it almost feels like a child being scolded. Its really sad because to him Chuck is still his big brother so he really takes it to heart.
Turns out, Jimmie meant EVERYTHING to Chuck
That scene of Kim going to Blockbuster and renting a giant stack of movies makes me so happy.

I think what Chuck said to Jimmy, and the fact that it was the last thing he ever said to Jimmy before he killed himself, is a big part of why the Saul we see in Breaking Bad is so heartless compared to Jimmy here
The Saul we see in Breaking Bad would never tank his entire reputation just to make one old lady happy again. And that’s the genius of this show. Seeing the layers of someone who was fairly one dimensional in Breaking Bad, and seeing how he became that way
I understand Jimmy. Struggling to find your footing as others tell you how “worthless” you are despite doing everything in your power to “play by the rules”. He made a mistake and then followed the rules laid out by Chuck. Then worked his way through law school while working in the mail room. When he took the LSATs passing the bar then all of a sudden Chuck gets all high and mighty that only “real” lawyers can practice law. Probably salty he passed the same test regardless of fancy school. But he couldn’t let it go and chose to be the invisible hand that was there to keep Jimmy from succeeding. Even minor things were not good enough because Chuck didn’t want to teach, he wanted to humiliate and make people feel “small”.
@@marquisdelafayette1929 Yep. And I know this because I identify somewhat with Chuck (not defend, but identify). All my life people told me how smart I was, because in some way I suppose I was smarter than most, but when I saw other people doing as well as me who I knew were big goofballs or "hung loose" a bit too much, or even bent rules, etc. I started feeling the same things Chuck would feel. "How come this guy gets to be where I am? I made the sacrifice of playing by all the rules, they didn't."
It's a nasty bitter way to feel about people and I think it's something that gets instilled in you by thinking you deserve more just because you're smart, and then seeing other people achieve as much or more than you. You start to feel like there must just be no standards and it can make you resent the world.
Goes right back to the scene with their mom in the hospital. Chuck feels more deserving of love than Jimmy, yet probably because Jimmy is more likeable, his mom calls out to him in her last breath. Because sure, Chuck might be a more behaved boy, but Jimmy is more fun to be around, right? That's what Chuck could never deal with. I went through the exact same feelings for many, many years with regards to a lot of other people. On paper I always felt like a better human being, but nobody wanted to be around me. It ate me up.
Chuck dismantling his house, as well as the lamenting, nightmarish horn section that screams through the score, is a reference to one of Peter Gould's favourite films, and one you should definitely check out down the line - Coppola's 'The Conversation'. Stars Gene Hackman as an extremely paranoid surveillance expert... and that's all I'll say haha.
Yessss I don't see this comment anywhere, but when I watched the ending of The Conversation I couldn't help but think about that scene with Chuck
Casting for and acting of Young Chuck was incredible for such a tiny piece of the show. It reminds me of Jonas from Dark. I love the attention to detail. Nobody sees all of it, but everyone notices some of it, so it is always worth doing.
Even in that flashback he was looking down on Jimmy literally while acting condescending towards him. Perfectly sums up their relationship.
Dark has some of the best casting ever. Also a fantastic story. I would love to see a reaction to that from this channel
I had the Peter Griffin knee pain response to that dagger from Chuck. His true colors are on full display and there's no coming back from that.
I always figured that Chuck only said that stuff to Jimmy because he thought it would make it easier on him after he killed himself. Like without the law firm, the only thing else keeping him from suicide was his love for his brother (shown in the opening scene) so he destroyed that relationship to make it easier for both of them.
@baneofbalor5881 yes, he didn't mean it, which is why he completely spirals out of control after saying it. The whole allergy to electricity is a result of his tumultuous relationship with his brother.
I dont think that is true at all. I understood it that he did it because he wanted to hurt Jimmy in that moment, as it happened right after he was retired from HHM and while he already had a bad relationship with Jimmy. The law, which was probably the biggest part of his life gone, bad relationship with his brother, his wife long gone and his sickness on top of that, makes complete sense why he did what he did. Opening scene and the rest of the show also shows his love for Jimmy.
@@baneofbalor5881 I don't think he knew. I think he was in pain and wanted to hurt his brother in any way he could, and his lingering guilt is what sent him into the downward spiral
@@baneofbalor5881 I dont think he knew at that point what he would end up doing, if anything, what he said to Jimmy at the end there was probably a big part of what led him down that path.
He was lashing out and wanted Jimmy out of his life at that point and chose whatever hurtful thing he could say to him that'd get rid of him for good, at that point he had already effectively driven everyone from his life away (the few people he already had) and Jimmy was the only one who even after all showed up again, however childish and half-hearted his attempt at apologizing was.
Mannn I was speechless after this one. Glad Jimmy set things right with Irene but everything about Chucks spiral downwards was rough to watch. I feel like this was the point in the show where Howard’s character was really starting to grow on me a lot. The show has done a great job of setting up so many good characters and events and watching how they all continue to develop and play out over these next 3 seasons is a lot of fun. I think everything really ramps up a notch from here
And to think we still haven’t even met my favorite character yet 😭 I’m excited for the second half of this series

The silence at the end of this episode as we watch the flames is still haunting. I remember when the episode first aired, they faded to black and displayed the number for the national suicide hotline before running credits. It made that final scene that much more impactful.

This ending was suggested by Jimmy from an earlier conversation. Had Jimmy not said anything about the dangers of Chuck's living condition, Chuck would not have thought about doing his action at the end.
I doubt that, Chuck isn't exactly stupid. He knows how dangerous those lanterns are, and what they can do if they break
Nah, that was just foreshadowing, a narrative device. No way Chuck was "inspired" to set himself on fire because of an off-hand comment like that.
The tragic deterioration of Chuck and Jimmy's relationship is so hard hitting for me. Watching this show and learning from it honestly might be what has saved my own relationships with people I love in real life

I believe there is a direct connection between Chucks illnes and the relationship with his brother. Also what chuck tells jimmy about regret is mostly projection. Chuck also has regrets and destroys everything and everyone around him. His decline is painful to watch :(
this ending makes me tear up every time, i didn't see it coming at all. felt really bad for chuck, he clearly hated himself for how everything turned out
These shows are a spectacle of showing that duality, or rather the spectrum of good vs bad. It's beautiful and cringy, funny and sad...and the characters are so wonderfully written. I'm glad you're enjoying it. These last two episodes are definitely some of the most crowning-points in this series because we finally get to see how these characters are both evolving, and devolving at the same time, depending on what part of them we see...their true selves? or the façade they put on.
Genius analysis
Chuck dismantling his house is reminiscent of a famous movie scene, which I won't name because I don't know if you've seen it. But it also reminds me of the scene from Taxi Driver when DeNiro tips over his tv while watching American Bandstand.
Love love LOVE how you identified the state of Chuck's house representing his mental state of mind BEFORE the second half of the episode. More prophetic words were never spoken eh?
The money doesn't mean anything to Chuck. The law is all he has, and with that coming to an end there is nothing left for him.

It's the ultimate manifestation of Chuck's relationship with Jimmy as his condition. The relationship broke down completely - at Chuck's decision - and thus his condition 'came back' and as you said, overwhelmed him.
When I first saw that last shot of Chuck's house going up in flames, I was thinking I can't even imagine how deep in the mental abyss you would be to commit suicide by fire.😬 Also I don't know if you are familiar with the 90s sitcom Home Improvement with Tim Allen, but the lady who says "shame on you." to Jimmy is the same actress who plays Tim's mom in the show.
I really miss those days of going to video stores and especially looking forward to what new videogames hit the shelves. I believe there is still an existing Blockbuster in Bend Oregon and I think that you can rent it out.
I love the conections between the house and Chuck's mind, in the end his self destruction reflects in the house, to the point that he burns It down while killing himself
The music when Chuck is ripping his house apart is amazing. To make you feel the intense conflict he is feeling. They really do a great job on this show adding the right music with the right visuals to portray the pain or whatever any other feeling they want you to feel that the character is feeling!
Chuck assumed Howard would be like "oh you really backed me into a corner here Chuck I guess you can stay". So imagine Chuck's surprise when his friend payed 9 mil to get rid of him. Then he pushes his brother away and self destructs.

As much as I dislike his character most of the time, I can kinda relate to Chuck in this case. He wanted a fight, he wanted to... stay in the most ass backwards way. And then he "won" just like that. God knows I've picked a fight few times just to show that I care, that I am not just there. Hard to explain.
And James, I really appreciate you doing high quality content, even when not in your usual studio. I respect the dedication.

I will never understand why Chuck thinks he's predicting an inevitable future when in fact he's creating that future by being yet another person who treated Jimmy with suspicion rather than empathy. So dumb for a smart man.

One of the reasons I think I've come to love BCS more than BB is that Breaking Bad didn't have the weight of being a prequel/spinoff to one of the most revered shows ever. It didn't just have to be good, it had to stand alongside BB while also setting out its own world enough that it wasn't just a "filling in the gaps" secondary show. What it achieved in creating a morality play with Chuck and Jimmy, with its explorations of characters like Kim, is just phenomenal.
And honestly? Up until roughly this point, I'm fairly ambivalent about the BB-prequel stuff on Mike's side. But you're starting to now see Nacho become a lot more compelling, and from Season 4 that side of the show really does start to earn its place.
Agreed. For me this was the turning point of the show where it went from being a really good show with some interesting setup for BB, to an amazing show that ties into BB better than I ever would’ve imagined. The overall pace seems to pick up considerably from here on out as well.

Nacho is slowly dismantling the Salamanca operation from the top. But as they say *better the devil you know*… Tuco was a raging psychopath. Don Hector was more collected and smart about the way he did things (relatively) but now Nacho is going to have to deal with the Salamancas version of Gus, Lalo.
Surprised his appearance is later than I thought. Thought he appeared sooner. Either way, guy definitely commands a scene.

I miss the hell out of the whole experience of renting videos. Even the driver in the car with friends was a blast. Little things you loved you always figured would be a thing.

When watching the series while it was running, we all wondered what was going to happen to Kim and if she was going to have a happy ending since she was not in Breaking Bad. The consensus at the time was that “if you think this is gonna end well, you haven’t been paying attention”.

I just started binge watching Nip/Tuck. Haven’t seen it since it first aired. I love how they get back at The drug Barron at the end of season 1.
This episode hits so many feeling. One of my favorite for sure.
I think Chuck saying such heavy words to Jimmy really bothered him too. We see all up until this point Chuck is clearly very envious towards Jimmy, so saying “You never mattered all that much” is really something someone like Chuck would fantasize about it, and then when he comes out and says it, I think it clearly bothered him to feel like he just drove a wall between him and his brother. Obviously I don’t give full sympathy to Chuck, but it’s evident that those words he said to Jimmy affected him.
“I just could never say that to my brother” EXACTLY THIS! That’s what makes this show so damn good.
Even as horror lover, the Final sequence with chuck is one of the most horrifying things ive seen in TV.

Jimmy's big problem is that he never gives enough thought about the long term consequences of his actions. He didn't realize how monumentally he screwed over Chuck with the insurance or the ramifications of ruining Irene's social life until it is far to late.

This might be the most uncomfortable episode for me personally, Chuck tearing his house apart is so gutteral
Here we go! The episode and reaction I've been anxiously awaiting. This is the point in the show when everything is set free. The moral compass of the show and for Jimmy is in jeopardy. Up till now these first 3 seasons were a lawyer drama about a character we knew little about personally. But now the show is almost slowly infected by what we are familiar with. Nobody or nothing can stop Saul now. And it's like he's the magnet that's pulling tbe breaking bad in essentially. This show is crafted so well. I'm not sure if this was intentional or if I'm reaching on this theory. Either way, awesome reaction.

I'm not sure we're all coded to think this way but...is 9 mil a lot of money to a lawyer of Chucks stature? Especially when it comes to retirement? That gesture may have been more insulting than the average person realizes.

On the cartel side of things, it’s cool to finally see just how Hector got into the state we see him in Breaking Bad. Having a severe heart attack that leaves him wheelchair bound and unable to speak is a truly devastating blow for him, yet completely satisfying when everything played out, especially when the big reason Nacho did it was to make sure his father was safe from Hector. Of course Gus knows that Nacho is the reason for Hector having a heart attack to begin with, so Nacho isn’t fully out of the clear. Then on the other side of things, it’s nice things were set right with Irene, but Chuck telling Jimmy he never mattered much to him is quite brutal. Of course giving the ending, it looks like he was prepared to be done with everything. I mean, Howard is basically doing what he can to ensure Chuck is retired by putting his own money into things as he wants to ensure HHM won’t go down the toilet and his last talk with Jimmy looks to be a way of setting things straight with Jimmy, even though that’s going to haunt Jimmy for quite sometime. Great reaction James, hope you’re doing well. Take care man!
I love this episode, but its also one of the most harrowing ones in the entire series, save for Jimmy setting things right with Irene, everything revolving this episode has such a dark and sad energy to it... maybe its just the hindight...
Chuck's dismantling of his life starts before his house when you think about it, Jimmy was just the last piece he had to push away. The way he treats Howard in both this episode and the previous I feel often goes understated by most people, but he really is vile to Howard at the end, he belittles his accomplishments and career, insinuating to him that basically hes the only reason they are where they are, he mentions how he tutoured him for the bar exam, how his father was working in a small office before he arrived, that Howard only cares about PR and that he betrayed Chuck, thankfully for the first time probably in their whole relationship Howard puts his foot down and calls him out on his bullshit, sadly way too late. In the end Chuck was willing to pull a stunt just like Jimmy to get his way, burn everything to the ground before even considering his partner and long-time friend may be concerned for him, with a complete disregard for Howard but also everyone else at HHM, all the employees and clients under their care.
One fantastic thing this show does is swing around our emotions on Chuck like a damn metronome on a scene to scene basis, the things he says to Jimmy in their last conversation there are beyond anything I could ever imagine saying to anyone I love or care about, its really nasty and unfathomably hurtful, yet by the end of the episode I couldnt help but feel so bad for him and how sad the whole situation is, and you can tell saying what he did to Jimmy was the final nail in the coffin to Chuck, something that tore him down and finished him off, because despite his last words, he did love his brother and cared for him (just as much as he also hated, envied and resented him, and that cognitive dissonance destroyed him from the inside out).
Oh also one fun note on this episode I like to mention, if you pay attention, you can tell there's a bit of a narrative parallel between Chuck's and Hector's characters up to this point in the story, both men who beleive someone they hate is conspiring against them and no matter how right they are on their assessment of the situation, nobody beleives them or even considers the possibility of them being onto something and by the end of this episode, both reach the end of their agency/infuence in this story (though not permanently in Hector's case). Its not a coinsidence that although at very different moments in time, they both took their lives in similar fashions, one immolated himself and the other in a suicide bombing.

It reminds me of the episode when it began with Chuck and Jimmy's mom's death. Jimmy went out 5 minutes and mom died... It must have a meaning, I don't know which.

To me, this is the turning point for Jimmy. And I wonder if Chuck refused to come to peace to be right, or does everyone end up the way they're supposed to end up? Wish I could say more without delving into spoilers

Regardless of whether Chuck believed it himself or not, it's evidently untrue. It was only after him ruining whatever relationship he still had with Jimmy, that his mental state completely disintegrated. Jimmy was the most important person in Chuck's life,
I’ve said stuff like “I don’t care about you,” but it’s always the heat of the moment just to make it hurt because I feel hurt. And we always know that deep down it’s not true. It only hurts more when actions (or inactions) back up that statement. And by this point it’s so unfortunate for them that it seems that way to each of the brothers because of all that went on between them.. even tho it’s far from the truth
And don’t forget Jimmys line, “you’re gonna die alone.” I found that more hurtful tbh, I could never say that to my sibling
If Chuck would have been alive, Jimmy never would've become Saul and he would have kept jimmy in check like he was doing during the Armadillo episode. Instead he died.
If Walt was dead, he never would've become Heisenberg and Hank would've been alive. Instead, he was alive.
Kim's arms were too OP so the universe nerfed her.
Saul legit wanted to send Jesse "to Belize" at one point just to cover him and Walts asses they kinda turn him into a Douchey Lidia near the end of BB

I know you're further along in the series than what you release in UA-cam... But I always saw Chuck & Jimmy as 2 sides of a coin. Jimmy conned others, and Chuck conned himself. He is an educated man, yet he "believed" he was 'allergic' to electricity? And we saw how quickly and easily he turned that off when it suited him (needing 'revenge' against anyone he saw as his enemy) and when he was completely alone, due to his own actions, he once again conned himself into believing his delusion. Anyway... Great series, important episode. Kim has the 'gun show' -- Jimmy is 'free' from his past... Hector is on his new path... Wheels are spinning. What a brilliant show. Luv you James. 😍🤩

Chuck is so full of it. That line about not caring about Jimmy that much? Pure lie, just to hurt Jimmy. Chucks entire existence is based around Jimmy, his anxiety is because of Jimmy. Hell, he relapsed bad because he pushed Jimmy away like that.
What a great episode tho. Howard shows integrity, Hector goes down, Jimmy shows that he has a big heart, and well Chuck...
Chuck doing what he did at the end of the episode, was single handedly the most malicious and selfish thing he has done. What a petty, insecure, and bitter man he was.

Chuck: "You've never mattered all that much to me"... come on Chuck, you developed an entire fake medical condition because of him. Really surprised Jimmy didn't call him on this, Jimmy knew way back that Chuck's "condition" got worse whenever Jimmy acted more like his old self.
It's not a fake condition, he just misdiagnosed himself. The symptoms and the pain he felt were real. They weren't caused by electromagnetic waves like he thought, but through psychosomatic stress.
Jimmy didn't call him on it because he knew its what chuck felt. Even if it was false, to hear from the person you care about the most that you don't matter to them would be hurtful. Chuck did care about Jimmy but was trying to be hurtful on purpose.
I feel a bit of sympathy for Chuck because he's clearly sick. But he's also an evil horrible man and that has nothing to do with his mental illness.
Howard seems to be doing well in his life, but I wonder how much more Howard could accomplish if he weren't mired in the bitter saga of the brothers McGill.

I was never quite sure whether Chuck's condition was more of a Jimmy thing or a not working thing. Maybe a general stress thing. I think in a way he was relying on that legal battle with HHM to keep his mind occupied. Howard settling it quietly in an empty room was basically the last thing Chuck seemed to want.
I know most people think Chuck isn't telling the truth about Jimmy not mattering to him, but I think he's actually being honest. I think he's enough of a petty son of a bitch that he really just resents Jimmy's entire existence and that he breathes the same air as him.
I didn't see him pushing Jimmy away as the catalyst for descending into deeper madness, rather I think he had enough juice in him to put on one last "see? I'm getting better" lie for Jimmy by having all the power on. I think the fact that Chuck knew he was probably never going to work again, and thus would never be well again, was more than enough reason for him to say something final and honest to Jimmy and then kill himself.
Wait til the finale when Jimmy takes responsibility of chuck's death under oath in court of law
