You're kidding me.. That's where it's coming from?! I'm so tired of cleaning the water out of that tire well. So glad someone made a video about this because I was going crazy trying to figure out where the heck it was coming from!🤯
I hope this video helped you. Good luck! Thanks for watching and I hope you’re subscribed!
Lol 😂 I know how is it feels
I just found water in the 2008 CRV I bought my daughter a month ago after I meticulously cleaned the spare wheel well. Thanks for showing where this comes from, now I have a new car task to fix. You made a great video of correct troubleshooting and finding the root cause, thanks for the time and effort to make this and share your knowledge! Subscribed now, great CRV content
Yes sir. Thank you!👊🏼
Thank you so much for this video, and the selfless time that you spent putting this together! I have the same model and have been battling to find out where the source was. You Sir, are a scholar and a gentleman, Thank you from the other side of the world!
Thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. It was my pleasure. I’m glad I could help. Thanks again 🙏.
Thanks SO MUCH for all your work on this. I have been waiting for months for this video as my vehicle has the same issue and is loaded with water in the winter! My CR-V gets fixed this weekend. Again - thanks for you time to tear apart your vehicle and post this video - much appreciated!
Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m glad this video will help you. Your comment alone made this all worthwhile. I really do appreciate it. It was an eye opener for me too.
Thanks again!
This video is so helpful. My 2012 Honda CRV is having a similar problem and Honda was having issues finding how to fix! Now I can tell them what to look at & replace. Thanks for this!😊
Glad it helped! Your 2012 is a 4th generation, but the rear structures should be pretty similar. Thanks for your comment and support! 👊🏼
My mechanic could not figure it out. First hit on youtube is your video and VOILA exactly my issue. It was raining today and my 2011 CRV was leaking at the exact same location as yours did. Thank you!
You're welcome! Glad it helped. 👊🏼
Yeah, you nailed it brother! A couple weeks ago, I inherited a 2008 CRV and upon checking the condition of the spare, found that the spare tire was rust-fused to the hold down bolt and the jack tools had rusted themselves together in the black tool bag. Water had been in and out of there for 15 years, I guess. I had to use a cutoff wheel to get the spare out, pulled the bumper, did all the remediation, and now, no leaks. Thank you for this!!
Awesome! My pleasure. I’m so glad this helped you! Thank you for your kind words and support. 👊🏼
Did also remove the rear crash bar? Wondering if just sealing all the plastics caps is enough.
I sealed the crash bar too.
Thanks for the video. Had the same problem on my 2012 CRV and used your video as a reference. I ended up using clear “Flex Seal” to seal the plugs/holes on the exterior. Couldn’t find seam sealer for the interior seam, so I used Marine adhesive “5200” which is used on boats to seal that gap. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks for the support! 👊🏼 Hope you’re subscribed!
You’re a lifesaver Nick!! I’ve been having this problem for years since I bought my crv new (2015). Started having issues a few years after purchase. I just went and checked the interior spot welded seam and found water!! Now to hopefully get it fixed. Mechanics always looked at the skylight drains 😑
Glad it helped! Your 4th Gen has a similar rear structure as my 3rd Gen. the repair should be the same.
Thank you 👊🏼. Hope you’re subscribed!
I am glad I saw your video as I have a mysterious leak in the spare tire as well. I will do the hose test and see if there is water coming from the inside seam. I am a huge fan of "The Right Stuff", a mechanic friend turned me on to it. It is not silicone, it is closer to being a liquid rubber. When you said I will use some silicone to seal it, I immediately said to myself, I will be using the right stuff if mine is leaking. (probably will since it is bound to leak eventually) It is made to make gaskets and it works great as a gasket dressing. But it is super sticky, and will hold anything together even if they don't make continuous contact as it will fill the gap and stick like crazy. I use a container every year. Anything you want to hold together or seal, this will do it. Its hard to work with and its a bear to get off of your fingers. It is expensive, but once you start to use it for repairs, its worth what it cost and then some. To my knowledge, there is nothing like it or even close.
Thank you very much good sir 👊🏼.
I’m glad this could help. And yes the right stuff does as you described. A wonderful product.
Hope your subscribed!
Fantastic running down of the leak. Well done!
Hey thanks so much 👊🏼

Hey Nick....Thanks for the very informative video! A few days ago I happened to look into the spare tire well of my 2011 Honda CRV and "lo and behold", it had about 2" of water in it! I hadn't looked in there for a while and it took me totally by surprise! My immediate thought was WTF did this come from?! The only thing I could think of was possibly it was coming from one of the drains from the sunroof as I did encounter that in an old Acura EL that my son had years ago.(The drain hose had come apart and the water was flowing into the spare wheel well.) However, after doing a Google Search and watching your video on UA-cam, I had a closer look and it certainly does appear that the water is coming in from the seam (on the right side) where the two pieces of metal are spot welded together. So, guess I have some work ahead of me but at least I now know where to start! Thanks again!!
My pleasure sir.. I hope your are successful in your quest. This is a common problem with 3rd Gen CRV’s.
Good luck and I think you will find what I showed will be your problem.
Good luck & thanks again!
Wow! That was amazing. Took a lot of patience but The Mechanic 2.0 found the source of the leak. Another job well done. I love this guy.
Thank you!!
I'd like to know what the purpose of those plugs are for usually they're for access points for mechanics like for wiring or something but there is nothing behind those plugs I could see that needs access to. It's just holes with plugs that apparently leak. Why isn't it just solid metal? Is Honda trying to save on the cost of steel? Six needless holes...8 if you count the ones below the tail lights.
Thanks for the detailed video you've saved a lot of people doing that extensive research finding the leak(s). 👍👍
wow! not sure why the engineers even put these holes these in the first place! My 2012 CRV also had this exact issue after hurricane Beryl. Thank you so much for posting this video, I had been scratching my head for hours.
Glad it helped
i love you man!! thanks for solving this. once the weather gets better i'm doing the same thing to fix my leaky CRV. you're a star!!
Thank you sir! Much appreciated.
I’m glad I could help. Thanks again 🙏
Hope you’re subscribed!
@@themechanic2.060 Sadly, this didn't work for me - i guess the leak for me is coming from elsewhere. i'll have to see if i can figure it out.
Thank you very much my friend from Spain. I had the same problem and yesterday I did all the same things you do in your video, but i have no garage. So i let it dry for a couple of days and tomorrow i will go to a carwash and find out if everything has worked. Your video is very helpful.
Glad I could help. I hope it works out for you.
Thank you very much! 👊🏼
Thank you so much! My CRV has the same issue which annoys me until now! Finally got the idea where the water comes from. Appreciate it!
Glad I could help!
Thank you very much, I searched a lot for this issue. and how to remove the plastic panel. Thank you again for sharing
Glad it helped. Thanks for your support. 👊🏼
I did the lazy guy's fix on my 2009 CRV ,,, just drilled two or three drain holes in the lowest spots of the spare tire compartment and it's been good ever since
Be prepared for rust and rot to eventually take over. The idea is to keep the water out. In my video is the right fix anyone can do. 👊🏼
@@themechanic2.060 I'm sure you're most likely correct; point well taken. I live in Boquete, Panama where it rains often and hard. it's been about three or four months of that and the compartment is bone dry at the moment. I think my leak wasn't as bad as yours was to begin with, though. I've got a bigger leak issue with the outside cowling in the upper left corner of the windshield that is resulting in a wet drivers side floorboard. Always something it seems.
Just done mine so thanks for pointing out this issue! It was also driving me up the wall so hopefully it'll resolve the leak. I also put silicone around the screw and bolt holding the bumper on the vertical sides of the boot as I had water tracking its ways from the roof and down across these too. Another path in I suppose!
I’m glad my video could help.
Thank you! 👊🏼
Very thorough video. FYI, I just purchased a 2013 with this issue, the problem continues past 2011. It had a badly cracked taillight, I thought that was the culprit but it wasn't. I'll be investigating as you did to see if mine is leaking in the same place.
Thanks for your input and support. Really appreciate it. Good luck on your investigation and please keep me posted on your findings. 👊🏼
Great video!!! Very informative. Burbon is a necessary tool!!!
Thanks for your support! Cheers! 🥃
Thank you for your help. I have a 2000 & a 2001 Honda CRV and my 2001 has/had the same problem, so I Thank you so much!👍🏽
Your welcome. Glad it helped.
Hope you’re subscribed!
Thanks so much for this.
I purchased a super clean crv from a honda dealer but then found the water under the spare.
They tried but couldnt find the leak.
Hopefully this helps them respolve it for me.
Awesome my man. Glad I could help.
I hope it works out for you. Thank you. 👊🏼
Thank you for posting. I learned a lot. I noticed on my 2010 crv that the rubber grommet holding power feed to the tail light at top of hatch widow was looser than well you know. It's outside of the hatch gasket. I applied some sealant around it. See if it fixes the leak.
Thanks for your support. I hope your leak issues get resolved. Thanks again. I hope you’re subscribed! 👊🏼
Great video, i've just carried out the same repairs to my 2017 CRV to stop water leaking into the spare wheel well and it worked, but I also sealed around the white plastic air vent between the near side rear wheel and the near side rear corner (you can see it when mechanic 2.0 removes the bumper) the seal is made of sponge an water will almost certainly get past the seal in time and leak directly into the boot. Seems a shame not to seal around this vent while the bumper is off.
Thanks for your comment. Yeah, there was no water intrusion at that seal. Not even a drop after of all the water I sprayed. But good point. Thanks.
Hope you’re subscribed!
Hi Mechanic, I own a 2012 CRV LX and am having the same issue with water buildup! I've owned this car about 8 years and have never noticed any standing water issue until I went to clean it recetly. I clean it regularly and also keep jumpers and other rope back there, so I see that area frequently, but this is new. There has been debris buildup over time and my place of work last year had tons of trees in the parking lot, so that could have been the tipping point. Ive noticed my water coming from the same two spot-welded spots where the rear plates overlap, as well as in the rear corners... I will try the one minute gasket maker and see if that does the trick.
Yes.. your 4th Gen CRV has almost the same rear structure as the 3rd Gen. The fix I shared in the video should be the same cause for your water leak issue in the spare tire tire well. Pull the rear bumper and get to sealing! Thanks bud. 👊🏼 keep me posted.
That was hilarious. I actually laughed out loud authentically after that speed it up portion where you got the passenger side, rear quarter interior plastic piece removed and then you're on the other side in the rear leaning in "I'm having a bourbon" I laughed before you said "because I can"I just thought it was classic!
Cheers! 🥃lol. Thank you 👊🏼
Very helpful vid, thank you. My daughter's 2007 started having this problem. Not sure when it started, but it was after several tail light replacements where the assemblies were removed, so those seemed like likely suspects. There are also a couple of plastic caps further down on each side below the tail lights that looked suspect. Silicone around the tail light clip holes and the caps didn't fully fix the problem though, so I applied 3M seam sealer to the rear overlap seam which as you found is where the water was getting in. That seems to have done the trick. I haven't gone to the trouble of removing the rear bumper as you did. I don't know where the external water is going, but it no longer seems to be getting into the spare tire well.
Yes, seam sealing the inside overlap as I did will keep the water out, but not pulling off the bumper and sealing all the caps will allow water to enter in between the inner and outer structures and thus allowing premature rust to develop causing more problems down the road. Depending on how long you keep your CRV. Just food for thought.
Thank you for subscribing! And for your comment. Thank you.
@@themechanic2.060 Being OCD and a worrier as I am, I did pull the rear bumper cover and crash bar, cleaned up around the bolt holes and plugs and sealed with 3M seam sealer as you did. I also siliconed the four bumper cover bolts for good measure too. Pretty simple job that only took a couple of hours, thanks to you. This is actually my daughter's car, handed down from me in 2012. Still in great shape with 160K miles on it. Thanks.
BTW, I did see surface rust around the bolt holes that secure the crash bar. It's a good bet that at least some of the water was getting in through there. I scraped off what gasket material was there, applied sealer around the holes and studs and also around the mating surfaces on the crash bar.
I have this same water leak so I definitely am going to seal these points up he shows in the video. Thanks so much!
My pleasure. Glad I could help!
Hope you’re subscribed! 🙏
good chase !!! great job !!!
i have problem in 2013 crv. will see where its coming from. learned a lot.
Thank you! Glad it helped. Good luck 👊🏼
Thank you sir. I've subd. Use a heat gun to dry out ALL the water before you seal that inner seam!
Thank you !!! 👊🏼
I feel your frustration, my guy! I have an 08 and I had the same exact problem. My OCD lead me to the same fix, I started watching and I was saying it's the plugs like you could hear me lol. I love bourbon as well and Jim beam is my staple, Blanton's is one of my favs. I wish I had found your adventures or someone else's adventures about 8 years ago. Peace my guy.
Yes sir.. thank you for the wonderful comment. Peace to you as well. Please hope you’re subscribed. Thanks again 🙏
Thank you so much i had this problem for some time now def gunna do this in the summer
My pleasure. Keep me posted!
From morocco . Good job sir
good job, I got the same problem at the corners..
WOW! thanks for this, interestngly i expereince same on mazda cx-5 with your guide i will follow through and i am pretty sure the sealler could be a culprit. Fingers crossed :)
Glad it helped! Best of luck my friend.
Thank you. 👊🏼
Excellent video. What size are the bumper bolts you put on? How has your repair been holding up so far? Thanks again.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. The bolts are 12mm and nuts are 13mm. The repair has been perfect so far. I’m really happy with it. It’s a permanent fix for this problem.
Thanks again. Hope you’re subscribed!
Grat job . Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for watching! 👊🏼
I have a 2013 with the same exact problem and hoping it’s the same thing!
The 2013 is a 4th Gen, but I believe Honda uses an almost identical rear structure as the 3rd Gen. Should be the same culprit.
Good luck! 👊🏼 and thank you!
Thanks a lot man. I have the same Honda crv 2010 and I have a leak from exactly the same place as your car (mine leals of the right side only). I resealed everything as shown on your video including the the right tail light....... BUT it is still leaking.
Do you know any other entry points besides those shown on your video???
I need to find this 🤬 entrt point because in 3 weeks I am intalling LPG tank in that spare tire well.
I really appreciate your taking the time and making this video.
Cheers from The Netherlands.
Thank you for the kind words. Other than what I showed in the video, the only other things that can leak through are the hatch seal, taillight gaskets and roof rack if there is rot up there. Other than that I don’t know. Good luck on your search and keep me posted. 👊🏼
hi nick, i have the same problem, i will try it. thanks for your video.
My pleasure! Thanks for your support my friend 👊🏼
Good luck on your project!!
A brilliant fix that
Thank you!
I notice there are 2 black plugs similar to the ones you sealed higher below the brake lights. Have you noticed a leak from there as well and also, did you seal those as well? Thanks again.
I did not find those plugs leaking, but sealed them as well.
thanks man. looks like exacatly the issue I have....not looking forward to pulling off bumper and all the work, but leak is the same 2 spots. did you need to seal any of the higher up locations on either right or left side as you go up sides?
It was my pleasure. I’m glad this video could help. All the sealing I did in this video is what you saw. Nothing more. Thanks man.👊🏻
Thank you, just took the bumper off, so I hope this will help!
Guaranteed. Happy hunting.
Keep me posted!
@The Mechanic 2.0 only a light rain during the night but I will make some further tests during the weekend. But so far so good 😉
Excellent!
Not a good idea to seal the interior seam. Because if water is leaking behind and pooling it will rot. The thought is want to know if those plugs or any other seals are failing I would want to know that to fix them.
I appreciate your effort and video. ✌️
Good point. Since I did this job, I have pulled the bumper again (one year later)and inspected my work. Everything is great and water tight. Thanks for your input 👊🏼

Mine is come from the roof at the hatch, dripping on heavy rain. I wonder if I use a smoke machine put inside the car and look for smoke come out would that easy to locate the leak? Thanks bro!
Sounds like the hatch seal on yours. Best way is to use a water hose and taking apart some of the interior.
Good luck! Hope you’re subscribed!
@@themechanic2.060 Will do, thanks bro!
2011 CRV.... Just found water in my spare tire well and could not for the life me understand where it was coming from. Thanks for the video. Did you investigate drilling some drain holes anywhere? Would there even be an accessible area underneath those caps you sealed to put a couple drain holes?
Thank you for your comment. No extra drain holes are needed. Just follow the repair I lay out and you’ll be fine. Thanks! Hope you’re subscribed!
I have the same problem with my 09 CRV. I gasket-sealed all of the plastic plug grommets but still seeing seepage. The only thing I did differently though was that I didn't remove the crash bar. Did you also gasket-sealed the area where the nut and bolt are when installing back the crash bar? Great vid by the way, I am susbscribing.
Thank you. Yes I did seal around all the bolts and nuts where the crash bar attaches. Try that and re sealing everything I did in the video along with seam sealing the inner structure as I showed as well. Good luck and Thanks again 👊🏼
Can you access these grommets from underneath without talking the bumper off I wonder?
Unfortunately you can not. The bumper has to be removed.
I'm subscribed! Thanks.
same case with my CRV 2015 , check the rear light assembly and re-seal it with rubber sealant
Did you watch the entire video? It wasn’t the tail light seal, it was exactly what I showed in the video for my 3rd gen CRV. You have a 4th gen. The tail light seal was your issue? And you resolved it? That’s great!
For 3rd gens the problems are behind the rear bumper. Thanks for your feedback and input! 👊🏼
Thanks ! Awesome video
Glad you liked it! My pleasure sir 👊🏼
Thanks for the head's up mate. Appreciate it.
Of course. Hope it helps.
good thing it never occured to my 3rd gen crv. it was parked for years outside and have had to experience typhoons. maybe the rear spoiler helps deflect rain water from directly hitting that opening on top of the rear door.
You are very lucky sir. Thank you 👊🏼
The best !!!!
Thank you! 👊🏼
I have 2015 Honda crv and have the same problem . Water is coming out from the same spot like in your case .
Yes.. the 4th Gen that you have has an almost identical rear structure as the 3rd gens.. same scenario. Do some investigating and it’s going to be a similar issue. Thanks man. 👊🏼
I have exactly same leak. Removed bumper, sealed all grommets with tiger seal. Sealed clips and bolts under headlights. And after first rain boot wet again. Where else i can look? Thanks
If you went over everything in the video as I did and still have water in your spare tire well, try checking the gaskets for the tail lights and rear hatch seal. Good luck!
@@themechanic2.060i will strip again. My car was standing couple years so still finding loads of dirt and leaves everywhere. I put sealant around tail light clips but there are no such gaskets. Will remove hatch seal to clean too. Thank you for response
Ok. Removed all trim and was sitting inside when missus sprayed water. Now still leaking from headlight harness seal and bumper clips.
Excellent. I knew you’d find it.
Same case with my CRV, that's where i found the leak.
watching this now because I only found out this problem after looking for the jack and it's been pooling over a few months 1/3 of my spare is soaked in this jacuzzi
Hey thanks for your support! Don’t forget to subscribe! 👊🏼
Great job my crv it’s also leaking
Thank you! Hope your subscribed!
Thanks a million
My pleasure.
Thank you
You're welcome 👊🏼
I replaced the weatherstrip and caulked all the seams around and in the spare tire area, I also caulked all along underneath the weatherstrip where the 2 metal body plates meet with the seam sealer which worked great but that really still smells very strong. I didn’t remove weird patching at the bottom of the spare tire area, I did not prime and paint the rusty areas, I will do it in summer when I can air it out more easily. Does anybody know of a spray or paint or epoxy that would cover the seam sealer and its smell ?
Great job! Only use an interior based seam sealer and a good automotive paint and primer. Remember if you have bare metal to use a self etching primer first. I did a video on the actual water repair… my very first video.

After you’re done eventually the “body shop smell” will disappear. Thanks! 👊🏼
Thanks .
You're welcome!
Water leaking on driver side when raining CR V 1999. What to do? Help
Driver side floor.. carpet wet? Not both sides? And do you have a sunroof?
Its not only for the 3rd gen crv, my 2013 also have a leak in that area
Ok. I’ve haven’t heard that. If the rear of your 2013 is similar behind the bumper, then inspect the same areas. I hope you find it. I hope you’re subscribed. Thank you.
Unlike your where its coming from the left and right side, mine,s coming from at the middle part of that area, seems like below the plastic cover is where leak is because i see a water mark from that area
Looks like removing the bumper is your next step. Keep me posted please on your progress.
If you’re not subscribed, would really appreciate it if you would. Thanks.
❤❤❤
I have a 2013 and guess what Nick, I said the same thing you said when you lifted the back lid and seen all the water I said you, mother Effer just like you same exact words ha ha ha
Yeah.. lol. That pissed me off!
@@themechanic2.060 I found my leak it was in such a weird spot, you know the bracket that holds the spare tire down. It was leaking at the seam. I just went underneath the car and blasted it with Rubber Under coating, boy I got away with that one
Nice!
What would happen if I just seam sealed the inside and not the grommets?
Then water would fill up in between the inner and outer structures. There would be standing water in there and leak elsewhere plus cause rust and rot to eventually occur. Seal the grommets. Always.
Good luck! Thanks for your comment!
@@themechanic2.060 is it possible to remove grommets by leaving the bumper on and removing the under tray for access
No. There is no access to those grommets with out removing the bumper. Everything in the video shows exactly what has to be done. You can do it!
@@themechanic2.060 my car is year is 2015 so not sure if it's the same problem or cure will have to do a bit of investigation.

Could be good for you too, my friend.
2013 and having a pool in the spare tire well 👎
Yeah, the 4th Gen’s too have this issue. Same fix more or less.
