The problem is, Americans think they can get away with anything they feel like doing abroad, because - 'merica. Unfortunately this guy decided to behave like a douchebag in wrong place. Sad and avoidable. Just behave yourselves.
They most likely tortured him terribly for a while, and then got order to stop and wait until all his wounds are healed so they can send him back… the only wound that was still there was on his foot, so they might’ve used like a sledgehammer to torture him on his feet and that one just was taking so long to heal… or they did it so he couldn’t run away….who knows….what a sick country, hope whoever had anything to do with him gets worse punishment one day
@Kon TheOverlord I honestly don't know what's true here. Many people say that this was orchestrated and the person in the video wasn't even him. He was just used as a bait for political gain. Maybe that's why I reacted that way to your comment. I just came across this and am still overwhelmed by how ridiculous this is.
Imagine being a 21 year old college student and being sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for taking a poster that (to North Korea) is worth more than your life, I couldn't begin to imagine how scary that would be
@@simonpapik6365 It makes no sense for them to target only one American tourist for no reason. He most likely did try to steal but obviously that doesn't make what happened ok

Well he took down the poster what do you expect them to do he should've known the country's rule. If you break the rules no one can do anything on your behalf.
This is a long exposition of what I think actually happened. Otto was definitely set up by the North Korean secret service. Basically they made up the whole mistery with the 5th floor just to be able to eventually accuse a young, reckless, American tourist of stealing a poster which the whole world already knew, is one of the biggest fellonies in North Korea. Let's use common sense for a second. If the 5th floor had really been off limits and used for surveillance equipment or security staff, so in short sensitive secret inteligence, it would have been impossible for anyone to get to that floor, period and anyone who might have tried, would have ended up in prison instantly. But an online video shows that in 2011 another young guy snicked in and filmed the propaganda posters on this infamous 5th floor, without anyone from the regime saying anything. Do you really think they didn't know he was there filming? I tell you they wanted that guy to show that film, just so that the public knows about this "forbidden" 5th floor and what is there,so they can create context for the future set up of an inocent American. Now let's say that Otto had really tried to pull off this suicidal action, if they cared so much for catching an American doing anything to their holy posters on those walls, he would have been caught on sight, not just caught on a grainy potato quality cctv video that makes it impossible to identify if Otto was there or an alien was there. This proves that North Koreans had been waiting for the right American tourist to frame for this and for the right time to do so. So because they could not catch him on sight, as he was never there, they created the video. Just think about the actual quality of this video. If you start on the premise that the 5th floor is a trap and it is, (but only as a pretext in this case), I bet they actually have state of the art surveillance cameras in each corner to catch anyone wondering around the propaganda posters. Instead, all they show ,is a potato quality, pixelated video which doesn't contain Otto walking away from,or towards any camera, or not even his face, just a shade of a person taking a poster. This just shows that Otto had never been there, because otherwise they could have shown a longer, more detailed video with his entrance, movements, exit and especially his face would have been clear to see. So this 5th floor is a trap in real life, as it physically exists, has the quality surveillance ,but in the case of Otto only really matters from the perspective of their fabricated story. In consequence, because he was not there, there's no quality video and they were forced to make one up, in which you cannot see his face, come one people, think. The Koreans didn't care for the realness or validity of their accusation. Otto was the right age, right mentality of a reckless explorer who decides out of the blue to cut short his trip in China and visit North Korea. The Koreans exploited the fact that he had already done something childish, like taking a tour to North Korea, without any serious preparations and with a dubious company, which they had known for a long time, would eventually bring young Americans, that tick all the boxes for them to be able to hold them accountable for something they never did. Again if North Koreans really wanted to make a solid case against an American, by proving the accusation of ripping posters from the walls of the 5th floor, they would have been able to catch Otto on sight, or second best, get him on camera and a good one this time and nobody would be able to say anything contrary about it. Imagine that this is the state where militia and secret police is literally everywhere, at any given time, as all the people inform about everyone , so an empty, off limits floor is just a trap for our better judgment, an illusion, it is a pretext for the regime to blame the right American for something he/she never did, because everyone else already considers this as an easy to fall in trap for someone as inexperienced like Otto. It is a simple manipulation of the whole world's judgement. You create a pretext for something plausible to happen and then you can accuse exactly and the only one that fits in the already fabricated story . This way, you have already created the grounds for that thing to happen and you just make a fake video and that's it. Also, it is said that Otto was actually spotted by a hotel staff member, but nobody retained him to question what he was doing, until the during flight check in,for the homecoming. That is because the strategy of how to perfectly frame Otto, had not been sorted out, until the final 2 days of their staying and doing it any time sooner would have given Otto and the USA, time to make a move. I believe that the video which allegedly shows Otto taking down a post, had been fabricated a short time before the moment of their planned departure. Also the fact that they lied to the tourist company about Otto being sick and that being the reason why he can't go back with them, shows that they needed time to coerce, even torture poor Otto, into submission, to later make him admit anything. This was made so that anyone trying to prove Otto not guilty, could not do anything, untill the trial when Otto himself confessed what they instructed him to confess. The suicide story brought up by those who say he was not tortured, is nonsense as he accepted to look like a coward and say anything they wanted him to say in an effort to stay alive. And in this regard taking his own life is the opposite of what he was trying to do. But after all Otto should have never gone there in the first place, especially because of the extreme tensions of that moment between North Korea and the USA. At the time when Otto went there, they were constantly bragging about building and testing their first hydrogen bomb and while the world was super alerted about this and against any minimal basic logic, he went there anyway, just to prove he was a brave man, not a boy. I also believe that from all the information available at the moment, he was depraved of oxygen for long periods of time and was also heavily drugged to stay alive and this way he ended up brain dead. So they did torture him, but not by beating him, cause that would have left scars but destroying him from the inside left no marks on the body. Also they knew that using this kind of torture, the truth of what actually happened would never come to light, because they knew about his religion and that his family would never allow an autopsy. The regime used him to attack, America, his Church and the CIA for the purpose of their internal propaganda and for possibly mellowing the sanctions against them for the later testing of the hydrogen bomb, by using him as a negotiation leverage. After they got away with the bomb testing they decided to give Otto back but in such a horrifying state, that anyone in the free world would fear their terror. Also it was crucial for them to return Otto alive but incapable of talking, so that they can still say they did not violate human rights and that they can keep the tourism going. In conclusion this is clear as day, that Otto was killed for being the right person, at the right time, around (not at) the right place. I am 1 month older than Otto, and I was born in a former comunist country of Romania so I have heard a lot about the methods of manipulation and the ugly soviet ways of getting the population into submission, that Ceaușescu used which are similar to the ones used by Kim. So I empathize with the whole situation, that's why I wanted to write my thoughts about it. RIP Otto!
@@ianlloyd4301 You version is really thin. It is almost impossible to believe that a big caliber secret service like CIA would use a 24 year old, to do what? To spy what? You have to consider the fact thay he was there to stay a short time, a couple of days max, so again what to spy? Also he was under permanent surveillance by the North Korean secret service, so nah I don't bite this...

I feel bad but this is why Americans shouldn’t joke about North Korea’s situation and send young people there. I see a lot of Christians go on missionary trips and they fail to understand what’s at risk there, yet bring in literal teenagers who of course clueless. The privileges Americans are so used to when going abroad mean nothing to them. Westerners shouldn’t assume they can get away with everything, especially white tourists. My korean family knows the cruelty of what war and abusive leadership does to a country’s people, it’s not something that should be taken lightly.
Okay but who jokes about North Korea. Never heard it in my life. Why do people ever think we joke about that? Maybe it was on social media years back Idk I’m confused.
@@summervv2776 idk why, NK has always been twitchy on their "war" button. It's stupid to think that it's okay to joke about it, especially when it could cost you your life.
It’s a terrifying story. A guy in his youth being tortured beyond imagination for something he might have not even done , the cctv footage is not even clear all you see is a figure removing the poster. Also imagine someone being tortured to an extend where they slip into coma and have deformed teeth because of torture. And again I repeat all this for something he probably didn’t even do and imagine the state of his family seeing their son’s condition.
they gave him something that had resulted him being in a coma and never give an update about his condition that he was in coma for almost a year and as soon as when he got back he died. north korea did something that was untraceable except them. it's impossible to believe that he got in a coma after he was arrested and seen when he's healthy.
I can't imagine someone with high ambitions, dreams , a bright student of high school had his life end this way , rest in peace Otto , may your soul rest in peace 🙏
If he was that bright, he wouldn't have trespassed on to government property to steal pictures considered as "national treasure" knowing north korean citizens them self get punished harshly for doing similar crimes. To call Otto bright, is to cause insult to every other person who actually is bright
Him being ambitious and bright shouldn’t matter (cough USA people who only amount you to having value if you’re an overachiever and fake put together cough) what matters is he was a human being that suffered!!
I think it's easy to judge. Yes, he made an incredibly poor decision first by going to North Korea and second by breaking the law in such a hostile country, but I do have empathy for him and his family. While they were very poor decisions he didn't deserve to be tortured and killed, and I would hope we can all agree on that
Well no one deserves to be tortured, but he was an idiot and he knew he was poking the bear, besides it's not like our government doesn't torture people, ever heard of CIA black sites? Guantanamo bay? Waterboarding? Our government does the same things North Korea does the only difference is our government is better at hiding it
He did, because the north korean citizens would have got the same punishment or forced to endure the entire sentence of hard labour.... he deserved what he got

I don't even consider North Korea a country. If I visited every country in the world and didn't visit North Korea, I still believe I visited every country in the world because I visited the peninsula of Korea just the southern portion. Basically that's like going to Okinawa Japan but not Tokyo or Sapporo. You still can claim. You've been to Japan. So by that regard, I have no reason to go to North Korea.

the comments that I am seeing about Otto, sicken me. I knew Otto, and I know his family. Whether his decision was stupid or not, it doesn't excuse the fact that he died an unimaginable death. No person deserves that, no matter how dumb their choice. How many times have you messed up and been given grace? I can tell you that it happens everyday. We don't deserve to wake up each morning, yet we do. Cause God has given us an unimaginable amount of Grace. So whether he made a good decision or not, he didn't deserve to die. Period.

maryam khan There's no need to be so harsh. Yes, it's never right to steal in any country. But what you have to understand is that North Korea is a harsh, cruel land with death sentences for owning a Bible or watching porn. Even though he got 15 years of hard labor, his parents were aware that this was basically a death sentence and tried desperately to get him out. They did, only to have him die six days later. They're going through a hard time right now. Don't be so harsh

And if he was innocent, I feel very sorry for him, but as for me, I wouldn't want to visit North Korea as I know its possible they could just decide to frame you and end up using you as a pawn in their political agenda. The Pro's definitely don't outweigh the con's of visiting N.Korea kek.
It’s such a sad story but situations like this are why US citizens aren’t allowed in North Korea. The fact that his parents felt it was ok for him to bypass the laws in the US and enter North Korea through China is absolutely ridiculous.
I'm sorry but he decided to travel to North Korea and then he is caught stealing a picture/propaganda poster from a hotel and he should have known better and he got caught sorry but he made so many bad choices including theft. Why would anyone travel to North Korea and then commit a crime?
I have a hard time believing he would be stupid enough to think he could smuggle something as large as that poster from the country. I think his citizenship is what led to his downfall.
While it is tragic his family should not be blaming US politicians as it was totally his fault for going to a country where we have no diplomatic ties. Taking a poster was indeed petty but you are dealing with a dictator so it was his fault not Obama or Trumps fault. Bottom line you do stupid things you win dumb prizes
Here's an idea: Instead of displaying guilt during his testimony he should've said that he loved North Korea so much that he just had to have a piece of it... crazy idea but I think that would've rubbed their egos enough to at least not put him in a coma (we all know they did). Displaying guilt led them to believe that he was stealing it out of malicious intent, but if he instead led them to believe that he did it because of his "unconditional love" for the country, he might have rubbed them the right way and things MIGHT have been a little different.
Lucas Alamo he's American so that might go over their heads as him trying to fake it to get out of a jail sentence and disrespect North Korea etc, also the confession did seem very over dramatized like it was scripted the crying seemed real but if it was him that did remove the picture, I can't sympathize with his stupidity like why in a foreign country that hates your countries guts how are you going to do that.
He may have been coerced to read the statement. I saw no tears. I'm certain they intended to break him. We have no idea what he said or did. We only know he booked a flight through China, was healthy, came home a vegetable.
So he went to North Korea KNOWING the laws, broke them, and people side with Otto? It sucks it has to be this way, I don't even agree with North Korea, but he knew the laws there and knew exactly where he was going. Plus there's a chance he tried to commit $u1c1d3 by $tr@ngl1ng and it wasn't torture. But who knows, I still think he shouldn't have gone to North Korea and break the laws there.
When you go to any foreign country, you must remember to respect local laws. No one knows what really happened, all the stories are one sided in favour of whichever country the news company came from. With all the stories about the animosity between US and North Korea, I don’t understand why these kids were not briefed before the trip as to behave extra careful and not to behave as they do when in the US when they touchdown in North Korea. No one “ parties” in a communist country like North korea. Even US state dept. Warned Americans about travelling there, so why were there still tours to go there by American travel agencies? It’s like they took a rock and hit themselves in the head.
What happened here is disgusting but is not surprising at all. This is a prime example of why you don't go into someone else's house and break someone else's rules because you will suffer someone else's consequences. I don't condone what they did not support it, but I do understand the legalities as IN THAT COUNTRY what he did was a crime against the government, whether it is here or not is irrelevant.
He was deprived of oxygen for at least 4 minutes, by over-medication or torture. Assuming he was inhumanly treated by torture and since he was in a coma for over a year. Yet suprisingly showed no signs of bed sores. Therefore, some of his care taking nurses, showed some small kindness and took care of him. We just need more good people than bad people in the world.

To spy what? maryam khan There's no need to be so harsh.

- North Korean claimed "he contracted botulism after taking a sleeping pill";
- American doctors disputed that, saying "... the loss of brain tissues was across the board. It was everywhere. Something that would happen if someone were deprived of oxygen".
In short, they choked him to death.
g43654 not chocked or there would have been significant signs. But probably tortured him over and over again by placing a bag or something over his head until he was close to or even passing out. - It is an EXTREME privilege to visit North Korea, the tour states you CANNOT take pictures on anything without EXPLICIT permission from the officials, and most pictures would HAVE To be showing North Korea as a beautiful country and friendly etc. So how does he think STEALING a propaganda photo of North Korea which shows them in a negative way is going to play out? Another comparison is this. I'm 22 years old and I'm white. If i were to go to a very ghetto part of Detroit, in USA, and walk down the streets in a shady fucking area, and say something very obscene and or racist...let alone casually stroll into a very violent area like an idiot (that I absolutely do NOT need to go into!). You can’t even see his face on the video -.-
Play stupid games win stupid prizes, especially in a country that hates us. A lesson to be learned.
I have a hard time believing he would be stupid enough to think he could smuggle something as large as that poster from the country. I think his citizenship is what led to his downfall.
I never mentioned anything about Trump. Is this your first time on the internet?
While it is tragic his family should not be blaming US politicians as it was totally his fault for going to a country where we have no diplomatic ties. Taking a poster was indeed petty but you are dealing with a dictator so it was his fault not Obama or Trumps fault. Bottom line you do stupid things you win dumb prizes
North Korea is pretty much the equivalence of Jurassic Park
