It’s not just hotels - when I was working at sea I regularly flew home from the west coast and east coast of the USA on BA. As a seaman (and I was Master/ Captain) I had a hugely discounted ticket but in the back of the plane. 4 or 5 times I arrived at the check-in desk to see a message board offering $75 or $100 additional to upgrade from economy to business class until all the business class seats were sold. Oh yes please I don’t mind paying that much on a long haul / overnight flight for a bit more comfort , nicer meal choice and nicer surroundings. I’ve seen similar small on cost upgrade offers on KLM, Delta and Lufthansa always flying out of the USA, never going to the USA.

Given the rocketing costs in the US, these days it's probably gonna take a $100 bill to have any effect!
Seriously, there might be issues with staff accepting bribes nowadays being in breach of anti-corruption laws. There are CCTVs everywhere and being seen to accept a cash bribe could mean big trouble.

I think it’s always been pretty open, staff would sometimes even lay the money on the counter; tipping is huge in USA so I don’t think it’s a big deal.

Really quite disappointing how you chose not to engage at all with my very genuine feedback on your last video. Lost some respect to be perfectly honest.

Fair enough. What feedback are you talking about exactly?

@jetsetjimbo on the last video where you explained how to undermine a company's free cancellation policy by booking to hold a room and then cancelling to get a better rate just before travelling. I explained how, as someone who runs a small accommodation business, this is just exploiting a policy that we offer to make booking less risky for our customers. I explained how the policy was sort of a necessary condition of doing business post-covid where customers were nervous about losing money if they were unable to travel, so accommodation businesses like mine started absorbing the risk by offering free cancellation so that WE would be out of pocket if YOU couldn't travel, but it helped to encourage bookings and keep businesses like mine afloat. These policies only work for us if they are not abused in the way you suggested and rely on honesty from people who book with us. If all of my summer bookings reserve a property 6 months in advance knowing they will cancel just before travelling so they can rebook at a lower rate (because of course it's preferable for me to offer a 20% discount than to have an empty room at the last minute), then I would go out of business very quickly. I also, wouldn't allow someone to ever rebook with me if I thought they had done the kind of thing you were suggesting.
A little honesty and integrity is required when using small business rather than trying to exploit loopholes to save yourself a few pounds at the expense of everyone else.
      Thanks,
      Steve

Right ok. I’ve just found it, UA-cam had hidden it from me as I guess it thought I might be triggered or something. I’m going to remove it as I find it personally disrespectful.
I stand by the video and the advice I gave. It’s clearly aimed at hotel chains and car hire chains rather than holiday cottages so am surprised you’ve taken umbrage with it. If you don’t want people cancelling last minute then don’t offer fee cancellation - that’s a you issue rather than a me issue to be honest.
As for my support for small businesses I consult and or coach 3 small businesses currently that I have never taken a penny on payment from and nor am I ever likely to.
I’m not here to win you over, if you’re disgusted by my content and have no respect for me then don’t watch but please don’t accuse me of anything untoward when I’m trying to help people save a few quid.
      Good luck with your business.

@jetsetjimbo appreciate your reply and of course you're free to remove comments as you see fit. I meant no disrespect and I hope I set out the reasons that I think this advice is exploitative of a policy that exists to make the lives of well-meaning consumers better. Sometimes perhaps it's better not to try and find every single loophole that can make us each individually a little richer and stop to think why that policy exists, who it benefits and how they'll lose out if it's taken away due to abuse of it.
Apologies if I missed it in the video, but I didn't see anything to draw a distinction between doing this to the Hilton Group vs a guy with a small holiday let business. I'm not sure there would be much milage in debating where that line sits either to be honest.
I offer free cancellation as it gives otherwise nervous customers the confidence to book and works very well in the absence of people trying to take advantage for the sake of a small personal gain.
As I said before, I enjoy your content otherwise and perhaps I'm too sensitive about this point, but I thought best to share my feelings in case you hadn't considered this angle.
