I’ve had a couple individuals leave me poorly thought out and passive aggressive comments about this video so thought I would pin some extra info here. This is intended as an informative video on some of the downsides of living with conures, of which there are a few. There are plenty of positives as well which you can find on my conure care playlist. Conures are not the right pet for most people, so I want people to be informed about what they might be getting into. Think before you comment, there is a real person who receives and reads every comment.
You’re doing a great service!! Because if you don’t people will get a bird and ship it to a bird kennel because they can’t handle it. Keep on putting out info.
You should take this video DOWN - this is awful respresentation of the Green cheek conure. This video literally begins with dont believe what you read in the factual descriptions about said bird and listen to my exaggerated negative representation of this bird! There are REAL families that own this bird and will be banned from renting an apartment or condo because when they look up creen cheek conure and see this video after they read the real facts and here they get complete contradiction!! How and what people who don’t know about this bird are supposed to believe? This silly video or countless factual descriptions on the behavior mostly experienced by real experts? I believe the real experts not this video. Take it down. Nothing personal. Save the green cheek conures HOMES and families being impacted by this video!
I got my GCC when I was in 7th grade I did so much research on everything I needed to know before actually adopting one. Of course I had a lot of obstacles to overcome owning my first bird at a young age. But as soon as I saw Ozzy we really just clicked. Ozzy has been my best friend for about 7 1/2 years now. Really the best decision I’ve ever made. He is a thriving healthy 9yr old and I’m so glad I have another 15-20 years left to share with him❤
My green-cheeked conure is 11 years old. He's not messy at all. It's a little noisy, but on the bearable way. Very intelligent, he learned easily words and phrases. He's always on my shoulder. He's one of the best things that ever happened to me. I would recommend that type of bird to anybody who is ready to have a little bird as their best friend.
This is a fantastic video. I've had birds for almost my entire life and made the decision to get a green cheek conure after researching what they were like. After we got our first GCC, we quickly realized a lot of the stuff on the internet is wrong about conures, and what you've said here is exactly what we've found out to be true as well! Like you said, a lot of people say GCC's are quiet, this is a downright dirty lie! They're also definitely not a beginner bird, they're intermediate at the very least because like you said, of the time commitment they need. I LOVE GCC's (as you know I have three now!), they're easily my favorite animal as they make the best companions, but that's partly because I can take care of them now. In my mid thirties I've more or less settled down and don't have the desire to always head out of the house. As a teenager or in my twenties they would have absolutely have been the wrong type of bird for me! Fantastic companions, but definitely one for when you have some stability in your life already.
I WISH GCCs were quiet 😂 but you are right, they're bundles of fun for the right humans! I rarely have the desire to leave the house unless for work so I think they suit me well too 😂
Thank you a lot for making this video. I grew up with a conure as my very first pet (by that I mean, he was already in the family and decided instantly that he was no longer my dad's bird he was my bird the moment I was brought home from the hospital) and was with me until I was around 16. (no idea how old he was when my dad rescued him, so we know he was over 20 and guess closer to 30 when he passed) Recently I've been missing the companionship of bird and pondering how feesable it was at all for me to have another conure, because like... that was my bird!! and it's really nice to have something to help me take off the rose tinted glasses of my childhood, because of course it was easy taking care of him when I was a kid and had all the free time in the world, living in the middle of nowhere with my parents where noise wasn't an issue. I don't think I can get one until I have more stable income and housing, but gosh, watching your birds dig around in hair and play across your shoulders still makes me really miss that experience.
I love your honesty Sophie…it’s refreshing to hear someone who speaks frankly and respectfully about the challenges of caring for conures. Thank you for all your informative videos…I often recommend your channel to others. ☺️
You’ve convinced me that I am not fit for this bird lol. And I mean that in a positive way I have lots of birds I was just considering a Conure. Thank you for your honesty.
I started researching getting a Conure about a week ago. I think they're so pretty and as soon as I saw a video with one I wanted to run out and buy. I'm telling you the backstory to make sure that you know how helpful this video is. I'm still not sure whether or not I'm going to get one (honestly I've been trying to talk myself out of it but that's not working very well, lol). You're video has helped both because of the information AND because it has led me to research things more thoroughly before taking the plunge. I still don't know what I'm going to do, but the information you have provided in this video has been invaluable when it comes to having the facts to make the right decision. TL;DR the haters can kick rocks.
These guys have the most playful personalities of ever seen in a bird. I saw two today in the local pet shop wrestling, just like a couple of puppies would. They really got into it and it lasted for about 15 minutes, until I left. I'm adopting or buying. Maybe both.
I love my Conure he’s very chill he only makes noises when the blanket is taken off the cage or if there is alot of people round but for a normal day at home he’s very chill his noise is not bad I live in a apartment never had complaints he’s is very messy that is true but I clean his stuff up within 5mins so he good and when I’m home chilling he is just chilling with me laying on me or on my head I love my buddy
That's impressive, Sophi! I loved the video and I just brought today my second conure. He/she is 6 weeks old and an absolute bundle of joy and fun. Thank you for sharing this video and your reasons with us!🌹
How wonderful for you! What made you decide to get a second conure instead of just keeping the one? How have they been getting along together, and has the dynamic between you two changed since the other conure came around? I've heard of all sorts of experiences, and am considering only having one conure or perhaps one with a budgerigar myself someday, and would love to hear about yours!
Thank you for your advice. Fantastic video. I have 3 budgies who are the loves of my life. They are funny and cute, who needs a tv when you have funny little friends. Anyway I just wanted to know about Conures. Subscribed to you as you were the best at explaining everything and I totally enjoyed your video. Thank you 🦜🦜🦜♥️
Thank you for the information. I have been wanting to "rescue" a Green Cheek Conure from a local pet store where she has lived for at least 9 months. But because she costs $799, and I live in a little apartment I have been hesitant. After watching your video, I have decided that I will not buy her, but I will continue to visit with her and hope and wish that the next time I visit her, she be gone to a good home. Thanks! 😊
We have 4 green-cheek conures and we absolutely love them, yes they bite a lot but as you well explained they are exploring, not trying to hurt us......I love how every time I approach the cage they leave what they are doing and come up to greet me 🥰 In the same cage we have 2 cockatiels, 3 canaries and a strawberry finch 😅 So diverse, right? Thanks God they get along well and they "respect" each other and behave well. Anyway, I love your videos and your conures are so cute and adorable. Definitely checking more of your videos on conure care. Greetings from Egypt 😊
Great video describing the level of investment you need to care for a Conure. I have a Sun Conure and pretty much the same in terms of needing time and attention and care. Yes, they are loud, noisy and need a lot of care and attention. Sophie nailed all the important aspects of what you need to consider. I love my Conure and am willing to put in the investment in because having him as my companion is a blessing. It is not always easy or fun yet they do give lots of love back.
My conure is also very energetic and gets into everything which can make it hard. They're definitely not easy but they're so adorable and cuddly which is why I chose the species.
I have a Quaker and a Sun who are 19 years old now. My Sun has definitely more challenging. Conures have a bigger and stronger beak for their size and their bites hurt a lot. She’s also more destructive and can agree a piece of wood like paper. She also has a loud voice too and it gets loud when she sees the vacuum coming. Thankfully she is not constantly noisy.
My bonded sun conure and white ear conure are 19 years old. I also have a rescue Hahn's mini macaw, whose previous owner went into a nursing home. It is important to have plans for who will take them should you no longer be able to keep them. My conures are free-flight and live in an aviary I built in the front half of my family room. I had hoped to introduce my Hahn's to the aviary, but he and the sun were not in agreement to that, so the Hahn's is in a bedroom. As to sound, you can hear my birds quite a ways down the street. I don't mind it, but several neighbors have commented on it. The conures love to chew, including door frames and drywall. There have been a few home repairs needed over the years.
My babygrrrl came with her quirks, she had many staff at her location enterprise scared. I visited her for 6 months before I followed through with my original promise to her. When I took her home I was saddened to hear that she had been there for over 2 years. They had placed her with another baby early on, come spring time, her mating behavior was in full swing, and her mate was purchased, she was left due to her aggression. Her bff include, a female cockatoo, from the same place so they knew eachother from the shop. My daughter and she loves me more than anything I've ever known. She is my velcro bird, and my tiel is her velcro bird. They are like yin and yang, they are fully flighted, they cuddle together at night, and my conure understands every thing I say. She has full conversations, its almost like she speaks English with a thick Par-rot accent, she blows my mind she is absolutely brilliant, I mean the sound s that she makes in response to any random statement I say fit perfectly with what an appropriate response of an English speaking human, but her favorite thing to say in her little frog voice is "hey baby". I didn't really know what I was getting myself into, but I would not trade her for anything in the world. If the trade happened to be money, I would make sure I could buy her right back in the same transaction, I would be lost with out my girls.
My crimson girl is actually really quiet. She has her loud moments, especially in the morning, but other than that she doesn't really make any noises during the day, only her soft little chirps ^^
Thank you for this video. I was trying to decide if a conure was a good fit for me and my lifestyle, and it seems it isn't. I'm a little sad about it, but much more less sad than I would have been if I had to surrender him.
I always wanted a parrot ever since I was a child, but with the amount of travelling I need to do its just not practical. Imagine my surprise when I realised there's a colony of them in the park near where I live. I call that a very happy medium :).
Im looking into one after i met the sweetest boy in a pet store Ive had a sexist macaw so i slightly know hell Ive personally raised many birds but ive always wanted a itty bitty bird with a big personality.
I totally agree. Green cheek conures are NOT quiet. I shake my head whenever websites say green cheek conures are quiet birds. A truly quiet bird would be a Senegal parrot or pionus
I guess I got lucky. The green cheek that I purchased earlier this year is generally quieter than either my budgie or my lineolated parakeet. He is also very gentle with his beak and actually preens the smaller birds. (I supervise him, of course.) He is very affectionate and intelligent. I agree with your other comments about mess/poops, expense, sociability and life span/commitment. I find that conures need lots of mental stimulation or they will go exploring on their own and get into trouble. 😄
No, each bird has its own large cage with door. I think it is important to give birds some out of cage time every day. My problem is that I can’t allow the birds to be out of cage in the bird room together due to my conure attacking or playing too roughly with the others.
I always recommend a potential parrot owner takes a trip to a rescue aviary. Just to get a real grasp about the noise levels these birds can put out. You will NOT get that from most pet stores (such as PetCo and PetSmart) because they put all their birds behind sound proof glass!!! I didn't think Buddy was ever going to get along with Holly when I got her. It has been 2 years. I have just recently witnessed Buddy preening Holly's crest :D He has made some aggressive attempts in the past, but now he is being very gentle and the preening lasts longer. I guess some relationships just take more time!
We don’t have many of them in the UK, but yes I highly recommend experiencing the species in person in some way before taking them on! And that’s adorable - glad to hear that their relationship is blooming!
I really want an inbetween. A bird that is sociable, wants interaction but isnt too over the top in regards to being needy. We loved the look of the lorikeet...until i researced owning one. Then i watched an aussie guys top 5 birds, and the top first, easiest to look after was a conure. But your video says different. We would br able to let the bird out for maybe a couple of hours a day.
@@nicknick4156 to be honest i don’t think any bird is particularly easy to look after! They’re all messy, noisy and require a lifestyle change (no nonstick cookware, candles, air fresheners etc, needing 12 hours of sleep) We love our conures and have 6 of them, but they are hard work! 😅
12 hours of sleep is fine 🤭. My lad is doing gcses, but wants a friend who he can interact with and will kind of socialise with him . He sees the big parrots that talk and sit on peopels shoulders and seem to behave, and i think he wants one like that!! Hehe
I was thinking of having one but it doesn’t sound like they are the pet for me right now 😢which is sad but I appreciate your input so thank you very much. I guess I will have to wait a Couple of years 😢 when I am able to have one though I will love it to pieces
Did you get them both when they were young? I want to get a friend for my conure but people have said they are very territorial or that they will mate. What do you think?
@@BirdNerdSophiethank you. I’ve got a female, would you suggest a male or female? And do you have any videos on hormone management 🫣😅 I’m new to owning a conure. Thanks so much ❤
@@hipposareradinmypad you could go for either, but another female would guarantee that any accidental eggs would not be fertile! I have a video on hormone management but my partner @theparrotteacher has a whole playlist of hormones content that would be useful to watch!
I’m adopting a 3 yr old pearly conjure in 2 weeks. The present owner says he needs to rehome him due to his new work schedule. I am looking forward to learning more about my new feathered friend once I meet him but until then, I’m doing ALL the research I can so I can be at lest a little bit prepared 😊 I’m grateful for channels like this one to help us newish parronts 💕 I already have a lovebird who will have a new “neighbour” (not cagemate) once their quarantine is over.
I have put some toys in my conures cage. He bites on to those but sometimes he gets angry at the toys and becomes quite frustrated. Is it ok to behave him like that or should I take those out?
@@BirdNerdSophie Those are some plastic bells. Now that you mention it, he grabs onto those then shake those and pull. After some moment he will get angry. So it could be because it too hard for him to shread.
We measured 75 dBa(from 5 feet away, no barriers) on our 2 conures while in our care. Yes loud. I'm not sure I heard the video claim correctly but they are below Jet Engine status. Hearing damage can occur if prolonged exposure (I think over 5min of continuous 75dBa nonstop). Ours were decent biters. Our female, Diamond, loved to aggressively assault toes. Literally fly or run up to them and full blown body slam and attack. Sinnamon, the male, talked to us in mimicking speech and was territorial of the liquor cabinet.
Yes they are below jet engine level, though some nanday conures have been recorded at a very similar decibel level! After working with parrots for 14 years, I definitely have poor hearing 😂
I definitely agreed with the cost aspect of it. I've had my green cheek for all of a month and a half and I've spent what I paid for him and then some just on toys and food.
It's always good to get deals for birds. Places vary on costs and different conure types and breeding can cost $375, well over $1k, or in the thousands even at a cheaper, yet responsible pet store (I went to one just like this recently). Additionally, food and toys need to be replaced and vet bills can definitely get expensive. Air filters and other supplies that are recommended for keeping them safe and healthy can also be costly. It really depends on the effort that's put in, good deals and savings, emergencies and check-ups, and general upkeep. It adds up!! Luckily, I don't plan to move out soon nor want children, and I cannot have a cat or dog as I'm an asthmatic. But conures are hypoallergenic and not nearly as expensive as a child nor a dog (usually), so all-in-all it's a great _deal_ for me! 😍
I'm a new bird owner and i was shocked to see how expensive it was. I got my pineapple sun conure for a birthday gift from a friend, (she breeds birds), this did help a lot! ^^ we're considering getting another bird companian for my sun conure.
I have a male conure we found him in a tree outside our house he was in a poor state he flew down to me when I played some bird noises on my phone he’s very tame but bites every time even when I give him treats what’s your opinion to get him settled down many thanks Vicky
I had a green conure. Stanley I loved him so much. He loved to cuddle he would sometimes break out of his cage & then would walk over to the couch where he knew we would always sit & cuddle with him. My son while in High School cuddled with him then got sleepy. He put him up on top the cage on his little bird gym where he spent many days & he walked into his bedroom & went to bed. Stanley after a bit climbed down walked into my sons room & climbed up into his bed to cuddle & sleep with him. My son a sound sleeper had no clue he had done that. He never did it before. You may guess the sad next part. My son rolled over on Stanley & Stanley was gone. He was mortified when he woke up & found him. Stanley always only walked to the sofa waiting for us & looking out the window. I tried to comfort my son bcz he blamed himself for not locking him up & altho that is true what good would it do to make him feel worse then he already did. Lesson learned. We all loved him so much. We miss him terribly but I have not gotten another. It was heartbreaking losing him. He was so wonderful & very sweet. Very loving & always wanted to be near us not in his cage at all. I know I’ll get many nasty comments about my son but he never dreamed Stanley would do that we had him for years & never once had he done anything like that. I never would have left him on top his cage unattended but my son saw him up there so often ( of course I was home always) this time I wasn’t & Stan just wanted to follow him. I put this up as a word of caution so no one else goes thru this heartbreak bcz Conures love to cuddle. Be very careful & make sure everyone in your house knows no being out of the unlocked cage if you are not awake & watching them. ( altho he was an escape artist at times )
Thank you for this information. I wish I had seen this a couple of years ago before I bought my conure. I've had him about 2.5 years now, and it started out great -until I brought a second one home a few months later. My first one seemed to be jealous and never got over it. I was only rescuing the second one and sold him to a coworker four months later, but my first one has still not gotten over it. He always bites me (didn't before that), and I'm afraid we no longer trust each other. I don't know what to do. I've watched videos, but it doesn't work for me. How can I learn to bond with him again and us trust each other again? I really don't want to rehome him, but I don't enjoy him anymore, and half the time, I barely even like him! This is my first larger parrot.
I haven’t had a chance to look at your other video but the title alone helped so we did go back to basics and he is doing better (as am I!) but we have been moving and I’m preoccupied and work so I haven’t been able to work with him much yet but I plan to. I think it’s just a learning curve. Thanks:).
A million times agree. I do now have deep regret I got my sun conure. I am hoping things improve soon but it's really causing stress in our home and it's no longer a peaceful place to be.
Also, hawks, cats, owls, and other dangers can be an unseen threat for your birdie! However, you can train your bird safely and use a harness for walking them when outside if that worries you, or you can use a carrier! They make these wonderful backpack bird carriers that are so cute and trip-friendly, even for car rides. Hope you're able to safely fulfill your dreams! :)
Thank you for this video! I have a three year old Pineapple Turquoise Conure, [JelliBean]. She is my world. I have a question about what type of water is best for her? Distilled, Spring, or Drinking water? There is so much conflicting info, even from Avian vets here in my town. Thanks to anyone here who can share what type they use for their Conure family members.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊 if the tap water in your area is safe for you to drink, then it’s fine for Jellibean too 😊 distilled os definitely not safe though!
They make noise all the time but compare to every other of their species they are quite. My one make noise all the time but he's not loud but when he's on my shoulder he makes no noise sometimes starts tweeting a really cute tune and is so quiet I think it's amazing makes me think if he knows he's next to my ear or something 😂
A conure is a perfect compromise bird for me since they're hypoallergenic (I have asthma and allergies to cats & dogs) and not quite as loud as other parrots. Might a conure decide on a whim to screech in mine immediate vicinity, or become spooked by a cloud outside and bless me with its ear-shattering warning calls? Perhaps, but 'tis a sacrifice I, like a fool blinded by love, am willing to make! But at the end of the day, isn't such an illogical sacrifice what makes us human? Oh, the things we do for birb love.🥰😊
I got a pineapple conure , she just a year old talk does bite now and again but she knows stop it well love her to bits , we got a bird room my conservatory with me and she wait patiently on the handle for us to go and into her all her toys and stuff and learning , but I would never take my eyes of her for sure lol got climbing nets as she loves to climb and play wit her lots of different balls better footballer than George Best lol
All the bowls and cups Twinkle pushed off and broke, all the keyboard buttons he broke, all the bag straps he chewed through, all was worth it.. and yes he was messy… ❤
@@BirdNerdSophie ❤ yes they are. I have adopted a baby pearly conure …. No broken items yet, though he’s bitten both of my poodles and they run away from him 😂
My bird is always bitting lately. No one can get around him because he just bites idk what to do. He would usually not bite me or my 7 year old but lately it’s just painful bites
I had a jenday conure for many years. I still miss her. She certainly was loud, and bossy, and possessive, and playful, and an utter delight. Every parrot behavior/training resource I read had the same caveat: "this won't work with conures!" The biggest thing to know about them is that they have very high social needs and want to be included in everything. They can't stand being left out! If your conure is constantly shrieking, the only thing that calms them down is to pay more attention to them. Jekyll fiercely defended me from my husband for nearly ten years (she was there first, so ...). He couldn't get within arm's reach. lol Unfortunately, I did have to rehome her with a friend when I was pregnant with my first child; I was ill and couldn't give her enough attention, and she was terribly jealous after the baby arrived. She would fly across the room to bite my goddaughter, and we knew it would be worse when the baby started toddling around the house. I don't regret the wonderful years I had with her, but I could have timed things better to avoid the heartbreak of giving her up.
Hey, it’s great info you are giving us I have a green cheek conure he is my best friend. His name is Spidey. He sleeps on the top shelf of the medicine cabinet.. he is the best animal I ever had and I have had dogs, cats, turtles, fish, frogs iguanas. He is always with me all day long.. I also have a sun conure his name is storm and they both do not like each other, and I have three cockatiels. Well, I don’t believe in caging any of them.. just to let you know, Spidey is the best and not the noisiest obviously the sun conure is the noisiest. Anyway good luck with everything.
Id say most GCC are relatively quiet, as far as having one goes, and not that expensive at all compared to other birds their size and bigger. A big bag of pellets lasts quite a long time and shared fruit ain't that expensive. A general annual check up at the vet is what it is and I don't typically have labs done and monitor his weight myself. About the only expensive thing was that I bought was a Celltei bird backpack so I can take him on my bike rides and let him fly around in the field. As far as poopy, they do poop a lot, but he has his couple areas where there's cardboard underneath that he poops at like 80% of the time and he knows where he can an can't hang out, but he does try and test my patience on that occasionally. GCC are indeed nippy birds, too, especially if they get excited. If I play around with my bird in a certain way, like sneaking my hand up to him, I can expect to get bit, but usually he's pretty good- they will bite, though.
Ive always wanted Conure however I neve got one because I wouldnt have the space or finances to keep two and I wouldnt want it to be by itself. I also have a hard time sometimes when things get too loud. It tends to trigger my anxiety soooooo Conures probably wouldnt be the best fit. My cockatiels obviously can get loud too, I couldnt imagine the noise level of having cockatiels and conures 🤣 Its hard though because I love them so much!
Also the large lifestyle changes. No deodorant, no hairspray, no non stick pans or Teflon of any kind. Thought going into cleaning products etc So very worth it though x
I just feel a lot of these comments are based on all birds, all birds hell all animals can be messy and loud, it’s just that people are much more used to dog and cat mess and noise and expense
They are very expensive. They are messy. They need lots of toys and attention. I wouldn't change anything. I love my birds. The love they show me is unconditional. My love for them is unconditional as well. My bird Yoda actually holds conversations with me. 😂
I got an IRN parrot about 2 months ago. I have had a really hard time gaining his trust. My other birds were pretty easy to get to know. His name is Romba. Progress is very slow.
Have had my dusky conure for 14 years.....yes noisy...but for a reason....want out for TLC, food bowl is empty, wants new lettuce.. Is extremely social...needs cuddles, other birds to "talk " to... She has a large cage with toys...! If she does not get cuddles or yelled atfor digging food out of her bowl ....she willhide in her flannel tent and pull wing feathers out. ( Stress...thinks you no longer love her) avoid this... gentle " no" with a cuddle. My feathered soul mate. !
not done watching video but so far i had a sun conure(got him at pet store when i was 12) he would have been 25 in 2019) he passed away. miss him but right on the dot. he was very jealous bird. he stopped liking my sister when she had her son in 2019 he didn't like strangers. we had to keep him in cage when the baby was at grandma's(my mom) baby was so curious about Peanut but well not so well so sad. one family birtd as well from 1994 on it was just parents, sis and i. one time and i told him to cope harder, an ex boyfriend of mine stuck his finger in the cage and got bit like 10 times after telling him the bird isn't friendly don't do that. i secretly cheered on my bird and told my then boyfriend well don't yell at my bird. you were warned. maybe he didn't think i was serious. very nippy. four of us fam would get nipped from time to time. it would hurt but our dog's nips hurt worse. our Peanut was about 10 weeks old when we got him. cutest lil birdy. he loved shelled peanuts and would go grab out of dish and drag right to water dish. yes they also do poop everywhere a lot. it would spray. he even pooped in his food dish. he was scared and angry if in same room as we girls like when brushing our hair and or using the hair dryer. but he loved climbing on bar inside our sliding door tub when we would be in shower he sit and "talk" to us. wow that many deicbles on how loud they are. i believe it. i could be down the street at friend's house and could hear him sqwak with windows shut. he was such a good boy when i was in my 20's to 30's,when times esp in summer i would house sit for my parents obviously pet sit too. had leave him in cage but i would open door to play with him like 15 times a day. miss bird and dog. if i ever get a bird i was def thinking of going with a cocatiel. my friend had one until the bird died. he was nice bird but cage territorial he loved to whistle and i never could do that but somehow i was able to start whistling with him. i know birds need lot of attention i am a clingy person to animals. he was so pretty with lots of gray feathers. pets are family in my fam.
I really want a gcc! Today I gave the canary a bigger cage and moved my separated Budgies back together (they fought because of breeding) and they are so happy! I didn’t know about proper care for budgies until last year, but it has taken me ages to be allowed to let them out! I let all six budgies out at the same time (it was chaos!) so my 7 year old one left his cage for the first time. He loved it so much but don’t worry, he was in a huge flight cage. It’s pretty sad that the queen died 💔👑
This bird is NOT for me! I have a tiel and that is over the top for me. That is my husbands bird. We have had him over 20 years and he keeps on going. He loves me. I love him too and he gives me kisses but he can be very LOUD!
This video was so negative! I’m a real bird lover and did a lot of reading. I didn’t think I was going to have anything like my Quaker parakeet! I could cry that I spent so much money and you tell me this! I’m trying to reassure myself, by thinking the children are a lot of work, messy and loud, but I wouldn’t trade either one for anything! I have found out that if your main lecture was going to be all the above, perhaps you could start out with their positive points, then maybe talk of some negative points! The woman I got him from owns 12 birds, plus the store. She steered me away from quite a few birds in the store, but loved the conur’s, she did tell me everything you did, put told me how to keep him busy! I hope I love him, he is so sweet right now. He is still being hand feed, so I won’t get him for 3-4 weeks. I go to the store every day and play with him. The bird I really wanted was a Ringneck, but she and another worker thought this was a way better choice. I hope so!
The video is intended to show the reality of living with parrots - they’re messy, loud and difficult to live with which many people don’t realise. If you watch more than one of my videos, you’ll see I cover plenty of the positives. Parrots are the number one most rehomed type of pet in the world, so if I can stop just one parrot going to an unsuitable home then the video has done its job. I’m not sure why you’ve left me such a defensive comment when the video isn’t an attack?
I’ve had a couple individuals leave me poorly thought out and passive aggressive comments about this video so thought I would pin some extra info here.
This is intended as an informative video on some of the downsides of living with conures, of which there are a few. There are plenty of positives as well which you can find on my conure care playlist.
Conures are not the right pet for most people, so I want people to be informed about what they might be getting into.
Think before you comment, there is a real person who receives and reads every comment.
This was a great informative video especially for someone like me considering having one as a pet. Awesome video with important info. Thank you
Very well said 😌
Social media can be full of much toxicity it's crazy. Most people wouldn't interact that way in reality
He is a thriving healthy 9yr old and I’m so glad I have another 15-20 years left to share with him❤
That’s awesome 😍💙
I got mine when I was in 5th! Lol
@@kermitthekonureI got my conure named Jessica on my 10th bday
(I am currently turning 11)
Don’t count on it living to the expected lifespan. My kakariki died a few months ago from a stroke. He was only four. They usually live to 15
I got my cockatiel Tia in 7th too! 😊 I recently got another and they are the love of my life
My green-cheeked conure is 11 years old. He's not messy at all. It's a little noisy, but on the bearable way. Very intelligent, he learned easily words and phrases. He's always on my shoulder. He's one of the best things that ever happened to me. I would recommend that type of bird to anybody who is ready to have a little bird as their best friend.
They are cheeky little creatures 🥰
I rarely have the desire to leave the house unless for work so I think they suit me well too 😂
The thing is, before I was born, my family had over 60 birds
Sadly, they were dying and 1 died recently and now I only have 2 birds
My green cheek conure is quiet guess I’m lucky
My GCC is quiet except when I get home from work for about 5 minutes and sometimes after we wake up.
i have buddy my conure he is GCC
Thank you for sharing your story 💙
I love your honesty Sophie…it’s refreshing to hear someone who speaks frankly and respectfully about the challenges of caring for conures. Thank you for all your informative videos…I often recommend your channel to others. ☺️
Thank you so much for watching and for your support 💙😊
My parents bought a conure after they both retired so they could have the time to dedicate to it. He’s a year old now and is my little bird brother
That’s super cute! They sure do have big personalities!
You’ve convinced me that I am not fit for this bird lol. And I mean that in a positive way I have lots of birds I was just considering a Conure. Thank you for your honesty.
I’m glad you found the video useful! 💙
I’m glad you found my video useful 💙😊
I have a red throat conure and he is very quiet and lovable ❤
Adorable 🥰
Thanks for your positive posting! So glad you love them. ❤😊
These guys have the most playful personalities of ever seen in a bird. I saw two today in the local pet shop wrestling, just like a couple of puppies would. They really got into it and it lasted for about 15 minutes, until I left.
I'm adopting or buying. Maybe both.
They are bundles of fun that’s for sure!
That’s super cute 😊
That's impressive, Sophi!
I loved the video and I just brought today my second conure. He/she is 6 weeks old and an absolute bundle of joy and fun. Thank you for sharing this video and your reasons with us!🌹
Thanks for watching! Congrats on your new feathered friend 😊
Informative thanks our rehomed conure bullying the other bird but they are acclimating
Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you for your advice. Fantastic video. I have 3 budgies who are the loves of my life. They are funny and cute, who needs a tv when you have funny little friends. Anyway I just wanted to know about Conures. Subscribed to you as you were the best at explaining everything and I totally enjoyed your video. Thank you 🦜🦜🦜♥️
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your kinds words 🥰
Thanks! 😊
Glad it was helpful! 🤗
Get that sweet Green cheek! They are the quietest of the conures....tend to be a one person bird. !
We have 4 green-cheek conures and we absolutely love them, yes they bite a lot but as you well explained they are exploring, not trying to hurt us......I love how every time I approach the cage they leave what they are doing and come up to greet me 🥰
In the same cage we have 2 cockatiels, 3 canaries and a strawberry finch 😅
So diverse, right? Thanks God they get along well and they "respect" each other and behave well.
Anyway, I love your videos and your conures are so cute and adorable.
Definitely checking more of your videos on conure care.
Greetings from Egypt 😊
I love it when they run to the front of the cage too, though they’re probably just expecting treats 😂 thanks for watching 💙
Thank You For The Your Honest Opinion, Did give a complete clear thought of before considering to own one..
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for your kind words 💙😊
My conure is also very energetic and gets into everything which can make it hard. They're definitely not easy but they're so adorable and cuddly which is why I chose the species.
Oh they are a super curious species - you have to watch them so closely 😅
I’m about to get one I love to hear the cons of these birds so I can mentally prepare 😂
If you can handle the cons then maybe a conure is right for you 😊
5:29 that head jumping is so cute
They’re super cheeky 😊
I have a Quaker and a Sun who are 19 years old now. My Sun has definitely more challenging. Conures have a bigger and stronger beak for their size and their bites hurt a lot. She’s also more destructive and can agree a piece of wood like paper. She also has a loud voice too and it gets loud when she sees the vacuum coming. Thankfully she is not constantly noisy.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! 😊
your birds are so adorable btw
Thank you!
They are the most loving birds I have seen. So much simpler to deal
with
They are sweet creatures! 💙
They certainly are chaotic birds 😂
Oh bless her, sounds like she’s in a loving home now 💙😊
My crimson girl is actually really quiet. She has her loud moments, especially in the morning, but other than that she doesn't really make any noises during the day, only her soft little chirps ^^
Haha our crimson bellied is very loud 😂
Thank you for this video. I was trying to decide if a conure was a good fit for me and my lifestyle, and it seems it isn't. I'm a little sad about it, but much more less sad than I would have been if I had to surrender him.
Glad it was helpful 💙
@@BirdNerdSophieI have a trained conure, he sleeps on my chest! I still understand your reasoning tho.
I always wanted a parrot ever since I was a child, but with the amount of travelling I need to do its just not practical. Imagine my surprise when I realised there's a colony of them in the park near where I live. I call that a very happy medium :).
That’s awesome 😍
Im looking into one after i met the sweetest boy in a pet store
Ive had a sexist macaw so i slightly know hell
Ive personally raised many birds but ive always wanted a itty bitty bird with a big personality.
I have yellow-sided conure 💚💚
That’s awesome!
I totally agree. Green cheek conures are NOT quiet. I shake my head whenever websites say green cheek conures are quiet birds. A truly quiet bird would be a Senegal parrot or pionus
Haha yes nothing quiet about a green cheek 😂
Idk I’ve have several birds my whole life from parakeets to large parrots, and my two GC’s are by far the quietest birds I’ve ever owned.
@@cmd2973 every bird is different 😊
I guess I got lucky. The green cheek that I purchased earlier this year is generally quieter than either my budgie or my lineolated parakeet. He is also very gentle with his beak and actually preens the smaller birds. (I supervise him, of course.) He is very affectionate and intelligent. I agree with your other comments about mess/poops, expense, sociability and life span/commitment. I find that conures need lots of mental stimulation or they will go exploring on their own and get into trouble. 😄
Haha very lucky indeed! All four of ours are super noisy when they want to be 😂
Wait all ur birds hangout in the same cage????
I have just recently witnessed Buddy preening Holly's crest :D
He has made some aggressive attempts in the past, but now he is being very gentle and the preening lasts longer.
I guess some relationships just take more time!
We don’t have many of them in the UK, but yes I highly recommend experiencing the species in person in some way before taking them on!
And that’s adorable - glad to hear that their relationship is blooming!
Its been awhile since ive commented haha!! Excited to watch this video! Also YOU'RE ALMOST TO 10K! AHHH CONGRATS!!
Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate you being here! 😊💙
@@BirdNerdSophie Yes, no problem at all!! Can't wait to see more videos from you!
What would be the best parrot for a first time buyer?
It really depends what you want in a bird - no other species can prepare you for another! My starter bird video has more info!
They’re all messy, noisy and require a lifestyle change (no nonstick cookware, candles, air fresheners etc, needing 12 hours of sleep)
We love our conures and have 6 of them, but they are hard work!
I’m glad you found the video useful 💙
Did you get them both when they were young? I want to get a friend for my conure but people have said they are very territorial or that they will mate. What do you think?
No all of our conures are rescues! If you introduce them slowly and are very careful with hormone management, there shouldn’t be any issues!
Hey, that’s so exciting, congrats! And I’m glad you find my videos useful 😊
My sister's conure hates me...
When he sees me he runs on the ground quickly and bites my toes till it bleeds...
Lots of things can cause this! I have a lot of videos on it 😊
I have put some toys in my conures cage. He bites on to those but sometimes he gets angry at the toys and becomes quite frustrated.
Is it ok to behave him like that or should I take those out?
I’d be looking at what exactly is going on - is it hormonal behaviour? Can he actually shred them or are they too hard and he’s getting annoyed?
@@BirdNerdSophie Those are some plastic bells. Now that you mention it, he grabs onto those then shake those and pull. After some moment he will get angry. So it could be because it too hard for him to shread.
@@Judithoo yes! I'd take them out as they can be overstimulating too! Replace with easy to she natural materials!
They are definitely expensive to up keep!
I bought a 4 month old yellow sided green cheek conure from a breeder in Michigan and paid less than half of what they want in a pet shop
I had 2 green cheek conures they did poo a lot they need a considerable amount of attention as well
They certainly do!
I'm a new bird owner and i was shocked to see how expensive it was. I got my pineapple sun conure for a birthday gift from a friend, (she breeds birds), this did help a lot! ^^ we're considering getting another bird companian for my sun conure.
Parrots are definitely not cheap pets haha 😊
I'd like to own a conure but I've got a busy schedule so till then I'll have to wait to get one
Yes they do take up a lot of time!
I did a vet check up and the vet said that he's fine. So, I gave him his favorite treats and he bonded with me! Leo was just a shy bird 🤗
I’m glad to hear it 😊
Hi I am getting one in next week still baby I am getting the blou one still deciding on a name. Can't wait for my baby
So exciting 🥰
Thank you for replaying. 😊What must I have for him?
It is my first time you know so I don't know what to get
I have 9 months old GCC. But the bird is scared of everything. I'm trying to train the bird to be comfortable, but he is scared.
I have a male conure we found him in a tree outside our house he was in a poor state he flew down to me when I played some bird noises on my phone he’s very tame but bites every time even when I give him treats what’s your opinion to get him settled down many thanks Vicky
Hey! Have you seen my video on trust? 😊
Have you had a look for his previous owner?!
I love concures if I train my birds to the fullest and love them but I wish I have concures
Sending hugs 💙
I’m obsessed with her bobbing hahaha
Haha she’s cute isn’t she 😂
Thank you so much for your honesty & efforts 🌸🌸 i love this video, tho i think the reasons mentioned in this video apply to all/most parrots ?
Yes the points can apply to most parrots for sure! They aren’t easy pets for sure! 😊
I recommend going right back to basics! I have a video about gaining trust on here that I think you’d find useful 😊
@@BirdNerdSophie thank you I’ll check it out:)
@@freenbnme Have things improved? I hope he's happier now. :)
They are certainly challenging animals to live with!
I too recently got a sun conure and I think I’m going to go deaf if I don’t rehome him soon
My Baby cockatiel leo is extremely quite! He dosen't like to eat too. I need some help Sophie!
Might be worth a vet check up to make sure he’s okay!
I want a bird that I can let fly freely outside with me. Is that possible.? Something I can take for walks.
You’d need to have significant training with a professional free flight trainer for that to happen safely but yea it is possible!

@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you so much! I appreciate you letting me know! JelliBean sends love to your beautiful flock.
Haha my conures put their beak in my ear and scream instead 😂😂😂
A conure is a perfect compromise bird for me since they're hypoallergenic (I have asthma and allergies to cats & dogs) and not quite as loud as other parrots. Might a conure decide on a whim to screech in mine immediate vicinity, or become spooked by a cloud outside and bless me with its ear-shattering warning calls? Perhaps, but 'tis a sacrifice I, like a fool blinded by love, am willing to make! But at the end of the day, isn't such an illogical sacrifice what makes us human? Oh, the things we do for birb love.🥰😊
I've had a parakeet and my best friend cockatiel who passed. Not sure about this particular type of bird.
Haha that’s adorable 🥰
I love this video, I’m hoping to get a green cheek soon

My bird is always bitting lately. No one can get around him because he just bites idk what to do. He would usually not bite me or my 7 year old but lately it’s just painful bites
Have you seen my hormones video?
I had a jenday conure for many years. I still miss her. She certainly was loud, and bossy, and possessive, and playful, and an utter delight.
Every parrot behavior/training resource I read had the same caveat: "this won't work with conures!"
The biggest thing to know about them is that they have very high social needs and want to be included in everything. They can't stand being left out! If your conure is constantly shrieking, the only thing that calms them down is to pay more attention to them.
Jekyll fiercely defended me from my husband for nearly ten years (she was there first, so ...). He couldn't get within arm's reach. lol
Unfortunately, I did have to rehome her with a friend when I was pregnant with my first child; I was ill and couldn't give her enough attention, and she was terribly jealous after the baby arrived. She would fly across the room to bite my goddaughter, and we knew it would be worse when the baby started toddling around the house.
I don't regret the wonderful years I had with her, but I could have timed things better to avoid the heartbreak of giving her up.
Thank you for sharing 💙🦜
I have 3 and they are so sweet
okay!?
Aren’t they just 😍
Hey, it’s great info you are giving us I have a green cheek conure he is my best friend.
That’s a cute name for your conure!
The nanday conure is even louder than a sun conure!
Thanks for sharing!
I have one she’s the sweetest, and not as noisy maybe because is one, they are very messy.
They certainly are!
they’re a mess, yeah… but they also scream when we turn the hoover on. 🤣
😂😂😂
Ive always wanted Conure however I neve got one because I wouldnt have the space or finances to keep two and I wouldnt want it to be by itself. I also have a hard time sometimes when things get too loud. It tends to trigger my anxiety soooooo Conures probably wouldnt be the best fit. My cockatiels obviously can get loud too, I couldnt imagine the noise level of having cockatiels and conures 🤣 Its hard though because I love them so much!
Oh there are some days when the noise just goes right through you 😅 they’re challenging, but definitely bundles of fun!
Sophie i just got new conures i need name suggestions.
Ah it’s hard but totally an individual choice! Ours are all good themed!
madam iam gonna get a green cheek, but shuld i be concerned abt their Gender? Is Male better than Female or vice-versa???
No there isn’t much difference!
Also the large lifestyle changes. No deodorant, no hairspray, no non stick pans or Teflon of any kind. Thought going into cleaning products etc
So very worth it though x
Oh absolutely, any species requires a huge lifestyle change as so many of our every day objects are dangerous for them! 💙
And us. So they are actually doing us a favor
Having worked in a pet shop that sells many species of birds, I can say Conures are VERY loud!!!
So so loud 😂
get one!
😂😂😂
I just feel a lot of these comments are based on all birds, all birds hell all animals can be messy and loud, it’s just that people are much more used to dog and cat mess and noise and expense
I agree!
Well green cheeks are loud but suns are louder
Totally agree!
They are very expensive. They are messy. They need lots of toys and attention. I wouldn't change anything. I love my birds. The love they show me is unconditional. My love for them is unconditional as well. My bird Yoda actually holds conversations with me. 😂
Haha we have conversations with the conures too 😂
@@BirdNerdSophie glad I recently found your channel. 🙏
I got an IRN parrot about 2 months ago. I have had a really hard time gaining his trust. My other birds were pretty easy to get to know. His name is Romba. Progress is very slow.
@@BirdsR every bird is going to be different and that’s okay! Have you seen my trust video?
@@BirdNerdSophie No. I'll look it up. Thanks.
Have had my dusky conure for 14 years.....yes noisy...but for a reason....want out for TLC, food bowl is empty, wants new lettuce.. Is extremely social...needs cuddles, other birds to "talk " to... She has a large cage with toys...! If she does not get cuddles or yelled atfor digging food out of her bowl
....she willhide in her flannel tent and pull wing feathers out. ( Stress...thinks you no longer love her) avoid this... gentle " no" with a cuddle. My feathered soul mate. !
Conures can be wonderful little companions 😊
not done watching video but so far i had a sun conure(got him at pet store when i was 12) he would have been 25 in 2019) he passed away. miss him but right on the dot. he was very jealous bird. he stopped liking my sister when she had her son in 2019 he didn't like strangers. we had to keep him in cage when the baby was at grandma's(my mom) baby was so curious about Peanut but well not so well so sad. one family birtd as well from 1994 on it was just parents, sis and i. one time and i told him to cope harder, an ex boyfriend of mine stuck his finger in the cage and got bit like 10 times after telling him the bird isn't friendly don't do that. i secretly cheered on my bird and told my then boyfriend well don't yell at my bird. you were warned. maybe he didn't think i was serious. very nippy. four of us fam would get nipped from time to time. it would hurt but our dog's nips hurt worse. our Peanut was about 10 weeks old when we got him. cutest lil birdy. he loved shelled peanuts and would go grab out of dish and drag right to water dish. yes they also do poop everywhere a lot. it would spray. he even pooped in his food dish. he was scared and angry if in same room as we girls like when brushing our hair and or using the hair dryer. but he loved climbing on bar inside our sliding door tub when we would be in shower he sit and "talk" to us. wow that many deicbles on how loud they are. i believe it. i could be down the street at friend's house and could hear him sqwak with windows shut. he was such a good boy when i was in my 20's to 30's,when times esp in summer i would house sit for my parents obviously pet sit too. had leave him in cage but i would open door to play with him like 15 times a day. miss bird and dog. if i ever get a bird i was def thinking of going with a cocatiel. my friend had one until the bird died. he was nice bird but cage territorial he loved to whistle and i never could do that but somehow i was able to start whistling with him. i know birds need lot of attention i am a clingy person to animals. he was so pretty with lots of gray feathers. pets are family in my fam.
Pets are definitely family 💙🦜
Krikkit (Nanday) has been noisily arguing your points throughout the video..
😂😂😂
❤
It's true they're noisy but they're cute. I have 3 pairs Sun-conure, 2 pairs green chik and 2 pairs pineapple.. They all are cute.
Haha sounds like chaos to be! But lots of fun! 💙
Sounds like you are doing a fabulous job with them 😊💙🦜
@@BirdNerdSophie thank you. You too 😊
Thanks for the video. They're beautiful creatures but not for me!
They’re certainly a handful 😊
For a moment, I genuinely thought she meant college for the birds...
😂😂😂
My crimson boy is soooo loooud, his much noisier than my girl which is fun 😵💫
Yep, Kip is super loud too! 🙈
Yeah I'm still getting a getting a conure
👍
This bird is NOT for me! I have a tiel and that is over the top for me. That is my husbands bird. We have had him over 20 years and he keeps on going. He loves me. I love him too and he gives me kisses but he can be very LOUD!
Haha he sounds like a real character!
Then why do you have one of them
Did you even watch the video?
