It looks great and it was an interesting review, BUT I don’t understand how anyone could call it “kit of the year” before building it. We’ve all seen a few models before that appear to be great in the box, but when the work commences things aren’t quite so good - either due to a poor fit of some parts, or some inaccuracy. When it’s been built, the parts go together almost perfectly, and it scales and details out spot on, then it might be candidate for kit of the year.
Just love the review, your enthusiasm was infectious… subscribed. Agree with everything you have said and look forward to receiving mine. The detail is excellent…. i agree.. its been a long time coming.. That said the kits over the last years have come on leaps and bounds Thank you @ColdWarWarriors for leaving a comment. Please subscribe if you haven't yet :)
I remember building the original 1:24 Airfix Spitfire back in the 70s as a kid and it wasn't a patch on this kit from what I can see. I recall the fit being terrible on the 70s kit and my dad having to get involved to put the fuselage together it was that bad.
Looks like Airfix has designed it to have a MkVIII version produced in the future. The tail section of the fuselage where the tailwheel is mounted is made as a separate piece allowing for a different section for the retractable tailwheel of the MkVIII. At least that's what came to mind when I saw the fuselage halves. Plus it has the pointed rudder of the MkVIII included as well. I can see the aftermarket coming up with accessories, including vinyl tyres like in the original 1/24 scale MkI Spitfire from the 1970s.
It did look rather lovely when we saw the test shots at margate - not sure I'd get one though, given that i have 3 of the 1/24 kits in the stash and haven't even started those yet haha
Nice, ordered a few in for Buffers Model shop, looking forward to having a peek inside the box when they arrive....might even have to grab one for myself.
In years gone by I had the pleasure to curate several Rolls Royce V12 aero engines from the Kestrel through to the mighty 35 litre Griffon. The answer to your question is the Rolls Royce name was always stamped into the rocker covers and picked out in red. The individual engine details and firing order appeared on a brass plate affixed by rivets to the starboard side of the block and all parts were allocated their own stamped part numbers and location
That is looking like 1 sexy big well engineered kit! And made in the UK. I'm predominantly 1/72 but I'm going to have to get one! Fck knows when I'll build it but not necessarily the point!! Is the poster in all kits or just introductory ones? Great vid Mos lad 👊
Wow this looks like an excellent kit. Question though, will you build it, or will it be staying in your collection? Throughly enjoyed this video and your others Mos. Keep up the good work
@@MOS6510Models very good question 🤣. Would make a cracking intro pic for your channel though. Could you sell it once built? Maybe pin it up into the ceiling? But I do understand. I'll be honest I put it up into the loft when finished lol! But it would be a proper shame not to build it. But that's my personal opinion lol. Looks like such a nice kit
and where does port and starboard come from - Starboard is Steering Board and port was the other side as they steering board made if difficult to go into port as the steering board stuck out
I had no idea that Airfix manufactured in the UK! Is it out of the question to expect Hornby Loco’s & rolling stock to be made in the UK, given that injection moulding is not as labour intensive as component assembly. Secondly why did a more pronounced bulge in the canopy leave behind a seam line?
I do explain this in the video if you watch it through (instructions)..because you cannot physically do it hence why they give you two options.. one to remove the seam line and one which does not.. i think its a clever option
I apologise as I didn't have time to watch the whole video. Is this a complete retooling of the old 1/24 Spit? If so then it's definitely on my list. I do hope they remould the Harrier too, that was a fabulous kit.
Nice but in 1/24 it could use a lot of aftermarket and added plumbing for the engine and cockpit. No kit provides everything as it would be too expensive and it gives an opportunity to improvise and elaborate on areas that are sparse of details!
AIRFIX needs to get on board and produce 1/32 and 1/48 scale detailed aircraft kits rather than solely focus on 1/24 detailed kits, they're too big to store for the average builder.
It looks like a good kit. But kit of the year. Nope. Did I see some sink marks and blemishes on some of the larger parts? Plus there's a mass of ejector pin marks in places where you don't want them. EG on the inside of the engine covers. You know, I think their 1/24 Hellcat is a better kit.
Until Airfix is at least on the level of Eduard and newer Revell I’m not paying that much for one of their kits. I’ve been burned several times with their poor fit.
No need to shout! I must be one of the 10% then happy to see this kit! Not everyone builds Luftwaffe stuff. However, I'm happy to build either, but I thought Airfix said they wouldn't re-visit their earlier Superkits. Shame, because I'd love a Bf 109E to this standard. Maybe then, they would consider a Bf 109F? Not a variant that's been covered by anyone in 1/24 yet. Me 262? Wonder how popular that would be? Personally, I really hope they bring us a 1/24 P-51B at some stage. I'd be all over that. Still, we live in wonderful modelling times. I still pinch myself every time I look at the Trumpeter Ju 87A in my stash. I never, ever would have put money on a 1/24 Anton! Happy days!
Airfix has molded most sub-components flat-Eduard style. To sell this kit to a large number of people, they should’ve invested on slide molding to create the truss structures in 3D. Tamiya’s F35 does exactly that. This is a missed opportunity for Airfix - to bring modeling to the masses. Instead, we are looking at a kit that few will attempt, and experts will succeed in finishing.
@@brutusminimus2612 Apart from the body parts; components are broken down to multiple low relief moldings-Eduard style. Compare this approach to Tamiya’s recent F35 where the manufacturer has done the work for the modeler by molding many crucial components in 3D. The primary selling point of this spitfire is the exposed engine. It has 3-4 primary components in 4-5 colors-that Airfix instructs the modeler to glue together from dozens of parts. That places this model out of reach for the majority of modelers-buildability-wise. I truly wanted to get this kit for Christmas.
@@gokhanersan8561 I bow to your knowledge tech wise, I’m not a modeller myself and had never considered the subtle difference’s in the manufacturing process. 👍
@@brutusminimus2612 I don’t have many kits under my belt, but have been keenly following the developments in kit manufacturing. On the other hand, I am rooting for Airfix and Hornby to do well. I hope this kit sells well, so they can keep upping their game.
the problem with side moulding is the expense and its another point of failure.. they use it very sparingly.. that said there is some side moulding on the tooling of this model..
The kit is leaps and bounds better than their previous 1/24 Typhoon and Hellcat, so they are to be applauded for that. Like many Brits I have a nostalgic soft spot for Airfix, but I also recognise that most of the stuff they've churned out in the past 20 years has been pretty laughable when compared to Tamiya and Eduard in 1/48, and Eduard and Armahobby in 1/72. I still think this kit does not have the surface detail finesse of Tamiya's 1/32 uber kits, including their Spitfire IX. It is, however, very reasonably priced. As to your review, lots of good close ups of the plastic, but you seem very easily pleased; I can only assume you are not familiar with Tamiya's 1/32 and 1/48 offerings? No mention of the split underside cowling, which seems a real "f*ck you'" to modellers no?
@@MOS6510Models I'm not sure that "looks ok" really cuts it though - being moulded in two pieces when it should be one is asking for a large ghost seam in a most prominent area of the kit. If you do get a chance to speak to Airfix, I'd be interested in what they say.
@@MOS6510Models hey so I did some research on the split in the lower engine cowling, which you may want to highlight to your viewers as a positive / point of clarification? So having consulted Monforton "Spitfire IX and XVI Engineered", the main cowling is indeed two pieces, but the intake should not be split down the middle I believe; basically be careful which seam you fill. Hope this info is of use.
@@TheLaughingBrexiteer yeah that’s why I said it looked fine.. Luke researches the hell out of these planes.. and never would Airfix want to give a “fck you” to their customers…

That's the plan!
Just ordered mine, can't wait to get building.

Nice, ordered a few in for Buffers Model shop, looking forward to having a peek inside the box when they arrive....might even have to grab one for myself.
i'm due a visit to Buffers,, might pop up saturday.. i have a FAB 1 to pic up :)

It sure looks like a great kit. I think I will be picking one up
It looks soooooo good , mines coming tomorrow. Thanks for sharing
Hope you enjoy
Great stuff, have you made this yet? Looked for a vid but couldn't see one?
Look up John Alec scale model channel
I haven’t started mine yet
It does look stunning. Unfortunately I won't be getting it due to space constrants and at this time I cannot justify the price. 😥
I get that matey...
Does look a very impressive kit would like to possibly buy this in the future
Not really my thing, another Spitfire? It does look good and well done Airfix for doing it.
In years gone by I had the pleasure to curate several Rolls Royce V12 aero engines from the Kestrel through to the mighty 35 litre Griffon. The answer to your question is the Rolls Royce name was always stamped into the rocker covers and picked out in red. The individual engine details and firing order appeared on a brass plate affixed by rivets to the starboard side of the block and all parts were allocated their own stamped part numbers and location
amazing.. thank you for the insight
Wow the box has it become environmentally more friendly just comparing my 70s box
Thank you Philip Quinn for leaving a comment. Please subscribe if you haven't as yet.. It really helps the channel grow.
That is looking like 1 sexy big well engineered kit! And made in the UK.
I'm predominantly 1/72 but I'm going to have to get one! Fck knows when I'll build it but not necessarily the point!!
Is the poster in all kits or just introductory ones?
Great vid Mos lad 👊
i think the posters will be available until stocks last..
Hope it doesn't need as much clean up as the Tiffy . All display models at Telford looked spectacular I must say .
no clean up
Looks brilliant

How do you feel about Wingnut Wings models?
never built one as they were out of my price range at the time.. i heard meng has the tools and will be releasing them
Cracking video Mos mine should have come today oh well I’ll be an excited boy tomorrow I hope 😢 ps it looks feckin awesome and so many choices

Wow this looks like an excellent kit. Question though, will you build it, or will it be staying in your collection? Throughly enjoyed this video and your others Mos. Keep up the good work
Its the size.. once built where do i put it??
@@MOS6510Models very good question 🤣. Would make a cracking intro pic for your channel though. Could you sell it once built? Maybe pin it up into the ceiling? But I do understand. I'll be honest I put it up into the loft when finished lol! But it would be a proper shame not to build it. But that's my personal opinion lol. Looks like such a nice kit
Stressed skin effect?
just bought one on the basis of your review
Thanks Rob.. deffo worth it matey
You could also do a maintenance diorama with the engine in a hoist. It could be 3D printed....... 😆
So when you starting building mos? Looks really good but alas not enough room my way
I really dont know.. it would be a very long build...
@@MOS6510Models would have to agree with you on that one
She’s a beauty!😊
and where does port and starboard come from - Starboard is Steering Board and port was the other side as they steering board made if difficult to go into port as the steering board stuck out
I love these comments.. I get educated so much.. really appreciate you commenting
Thank you and subscribe to the channel if you haven’t yet :)
Looks like a wonderful kit, but as with a lot of models these days, no pilot. So either after market, or ground diorama.
I think pilots will become like stands.. you buy them seperate...
Said I would never build another Spitfire but might make a exception after seeing this
there is always time to build a spitfire
I had no idea that Airfix manufactured in the UK! Is it out of the question to expect Hornby Loco’s & rolling stock to be made in the UK, given that injection moulding is not as labour intensive as component assembly. Secondly why did a more pronounced bulge in the canopy leave behind a seam line?
I do explain this in the video if you watch it through (instructions)..because you cannot physically do it hence why they give you two options.. one to remove the seam line and one which does not.. i think its a clever option
Have you got the 1/32 Kotare Spit on order?
no matey
Waiting for mine to hit US shores.
This kit looked amazing at Telford, and if I had room in my tiny house I'd make one (but French cuz it's meeeeeeeeeeee).
I love the french decal scheme....
Can’t wait to watch a build of this bad boy👍
I'm trying to see if I can fit it in... maybe live stream the build every night lol

Great video Mos!!
Appreciate it!
What is the wing span on this bird?
469 mm
Its such a loverly kit, close call this or the Anson as best kit, Anson builds up really well but 1/24 Spit hmmmm its probably taking the prise.
agreed matey.. do you think it was side molded??
@@MOS6510Models yep without doubt if you ever find out for sure let me know
I apologise as I didn't have time to watch the whole video. Is this a complete retooling of the old 1/24 Spit? If so then it's definitely on my list. I do hope they remould the Harrier too, that was a fabulous kit.
Nice unboxing and review of this spitfire kit Mos.
Glad you enjoyed it

is it really? Id have said it was the GWH P40b or the Border Models Lancaster

Someone should compare this to Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire, they're in the same league
Nice but in 1/24 it could use a lot of aftermarket and added plumbing for the engine and cockpit. No kit provides everything as it would be too expensive and it gives an opportunity to improvise and elaborate on areas that are sparse of details!
I think Eduard are creaming there pants at what they could mass produce resin wise...
@@MOS6510Models Yeah like resin guns and brass barrels!
Winner...winner..chicken dinner..'nuff said..lol
Surely I can't buy another Spitfire can I? Can I?
Do it Do it.. link in the comments
AIRFIX needs to get on board and produce 1/32 and 1/48 scale detailed aircraft kits rather than solely focus on 1/24 detailed kits, they're too big to store for the average builder.
looks like the last word in spits. Should push the price of the Tamiya down a bit

@@radiationking9875 i think DPD are struggling this week..
@@MOS6510Models website did say there were labour shortages, must be all the 24 spits going out at once haha. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt
It’s a bit of a fanboy review, no pretence of objectivity. Ok to be enthusiastic but being completely one-eyed does no one any favours.
Until Airfix is at least on the level of Eduard and newer Revell I’m not paying that much for one of their kits. I’ve been burned several times with their poor fit.
name me a bad kit from airfix in the last 5 years?!!
@@MOS6510Models The 1/48 Spitfire FR is fussy to get assembled and has bad gaps.
@@richardc-ex7rt really?? I found it an ok to build.. sure it wasn’t something you did?
@@MOS6510Models the wings have a gap at the fuselage and there’s a big gap with the top cowling insert. I have the same problem the their 1/48 VB.
@@richardc-ex7rt interesting…
When will they Update the FW190 and the BF 109????????? 90% of modellers are NOT Obsessed with BRITISH only aircraft....
Be interesting to see.. they will release a 1/24 model every 3 years i guess??
Moulded everything flat?
No mention of the split underside cowling, which seems a real "f*ck you'" to modellers no?
can i ask airfix about the cowling
I think modelers will judge the tamiya kit.. the cowling looks ok
