      It's no secret that the defense budget has been the leech. But of course if we stopped spending there altogether our economy would spiral into a terrible depression

    • @Smithy0013
      @Smithy0013 9 років тому +2

      ***** Not only is your comment extremely racist, it's also extremely wrong economically. By outsourcing labor jobs to other countries, we boost their economy because they are able to increase production and create more jobs. We boost our economy by allocating our human capital to more productive positions and away from menial labor. Its a win for everyone.

    • @zeNUKEify
      @zeNUKEify 9 років тому

      I see where your going. But chillax, no one is going to listen to what you say if you're being a racist little butthurt shit. Companies move to china and india because the minimum wages are lower there. It's not the workers' fault, it's the greedy ass business owners that want to maximize profits by paying their workers less.

    • @Smithy0013
      @Smithy0013 9 років тому +1

      ***** It's not necessarily a bad thing either. Everyone is inherently "greedy" (when was the last time you chose a more expensive product so that you could give some extra charity to the company?). In fact greed (or self-interest) is what makes capitalism work. And even if they conditions and pay is worse, it's actually more beneficial than if they were running strictly off of their own economy. More people are employed and they have exposure to more advanced technology which allows them to develop more onto a developed nation's level.

      +MaroonBugUK It doesn't matter what it says on the launcher. The railgun was invented by a French guy named Louis Octave Fauchon-Villeplee in the early 20th century, who later petitioned for an American patent of his invention. The Germans developed it further during WW2, and now the Americans rewrite history again and steal credit.

    Projectile may be cheaper but what about the rest of equipment necessary to fire?

  • @msgsgt
    @msgsgt 9 років тому +1

    the secret is in the materials of the projectile. At those speeds any metal should melt from friction against the air. What they are using doesnt melt, has a in board micro circuit guidance system, and punches through any known defences we can cone up with. A tomohawk missl. cost 1million a piece and doesnt have the range nor punching power as the rail gun.

    • @msgsgt
      @msgsgt 9 років тому

      Not only the project is high tech, but the gun self produces tremendous heat. Back in 2004 that was their major hurdle in putting it on a ship. Cooling the gun down for second shot with sea water wasnt enough.

    • @haydenbingham6988
      @haydenbingham6988 9 років тому

      Even then, it's sea water. Corrosive to say the least, interacting with ridiculously powerful electrical currents. How did they figure it out though?

    • @IIKaDicEU
      @IIKaDicEU 9 років тому

      that's why the real projectile is in a conductive case, the massive heat is when it first exits, then the projectile is released from the case

    So, anyone else also realize that you can build one of these big enough to shoot objects into orbit or intercontinentally? Imagine one of these the size of a 10 story office building (land based of course). We could shoot warheads into orbit or hit anywhere on the planet with a round that for all intensive purposes would be perceived as a meteor or asteroid impact.
    Think about it.

    • @Lavos2007
      @Lavos2007 9 років тому

      thats part of the principles...it uses magnetic force to launch a solid slug at such extreme force that the impact from velocity alone is what does the damage...you basically just shoot a shaped hunk of various metals designed for durability...its the force and velocity that makes it punch such big holes in even reinforced armored walls...now imagine even lesser materials like stone or other things...
      also its speculated if built right, these things could fire farther and faster than convention sea-to-land missiles, and those missiles are already designed to be fired offshore and go inland to extreme distances...
      when the US goes to war, some of our naval ships literally sit offshore shelling the landmass from many miles away...i dont know the approximate number but its a very vast distance
      now a railgun doesnt use any sort of propellent...the magnetic pulse that fires the slug is what makes it go
      but of course that means the magnetic force has to be immense in order to eject the slug at that high of force/velocity...but it retains its speed and heading over extreme distance just because of how forceful the shot is

    • @MrONIXMAN
      @MrONIXMAN 9 років тому

      MrRavenXavier with good enough tracking to correct its self after reentry and all the crosswinds from different layers in the atmoshpere yeah it would. But i think depending on its terminal velocity it might be better launching from space, zero gravity means you can build as big as you want, like in gi joe basically

    • @Maddinhpws
      @Maddinhpws 9 років тому

      +MrRavenXavier Making it bigger is a huge problem, because even now these things are nearly melting. You simply cannot make it bigger because you cannot put more force into it with the current technology.

    • @MrRavenXavier
      @MrRavenXavier 9 років тому +1

      Maddinhpws According to the US Air force they say they can build one that big. AFAIK the only reason they haven't is because of funding, not tech. The only heat involved happens to the projectile, not from machine that fires it.

    • @moonasha

      modern ships run on nuclear power so no, it won't run out of power. They also have plenty of EM shielding

    • @dirkaltman
      @dirkaltman 10 років тому

      Uhh it's not hooked up to a bunch of D batteries it's powered by generators or even a nuclear core such as on a aircraft carrier or submarine so the power could be infinite. The rounds are smaller, more effective and cost less so it would easily have many more "warheads". many things can go wrong with EM weapons?? do you work on them?? are you from the future? the system is pretty fucking simple when compared to missiles and is much safer than conventional large guns. things that can go wrong are pretty much null you essentially need pure power and a projectile and you are good to go.

      Is this guy for real?
      Electromagnetic weapons DO take up a lot of power but what makes you think it will run out of batteries that easily? Hell, if they were sticking this onto a US Navy Destroyer then its energy problem is solved!
      Also, "Gunpowder" and traditional guns run the risk of jamming while Railguns use Magnets to shove metal up your ass. There isn't really much room for "jamming" when all you really have is a magazine and magnets.

    it's a projectile. how is the guidance sensor inside it suppose to help when it's helpless as soon as it leaves the nozzle? and at long ranges, you have to take into account the ocean, wind velocity, and probably a multitude of other factors that could affect the path of that projectile, so it won't be nearly as accurate as a missile.

    • @moonasha
      @moonasha 10 років тому +1

      It will be more accurate than a missile. It is faster which means less time for wind to act on it, and way way more aerodynamic once it sheds its sabot, and external sensors from a ship or a plane can relay information to the projectile while it is in flight so it can alter its trajectory. That's already how a missile works, but this will be traveling at mach 7 instead. Oh and because of the pinpoint accuracy and no explosive warhead, there is less chance of collateral damage. There is also no countermeasures for the projectile, and it won't show up on radar. It features more destructive power at a fraction of the cost of a missile. Even if you miss, which you won't, you can just lob another 50 down range. Once this technology is downsized combat will change forever. Kinetic penetrators are the future, and missiles are going bye bye.

      soundioulou cissoko 14 year olds generally don't have a good understanding of research in weapons development, the government, or how anything works in general. There are exceptions to the rule of course but you don't appear to be among them. However, age is a perfectly valid excuse for it so that is why I'm not upset.

    This is just the tip of the iceberg. Once nanotechnology gets involved, expect to see Advanced Laser weaponry and far more powerful Rail Guns that can fire at significant percentages of the speed of light, travel thousands of miles, and hit targets in space.
    With Nanotechnology, we can create Extremely powerful and efficient batteries. Combine that with the exotic materials from nanotech we can make nearly indestructible shells to withstand the extreme forces required to fire it at significant percentages of the speed of light.
    The future is full of terribly powerful and wondrous weapons of war limited only by the twisted imagination of humanity.

    • @haydenbingham6988

      Few things:
      The batteries- Done= Look up Graphene
      The space-railgun- Impossible= Little thing called the atmosphere. No known feasible element could survive the shock heating at speeds sufficient to reach space.
      Shells @ part of Light speed- Oh Hell No= Not sure you realize just how fast light is. Also, to accelerate to a certain percentage, that number is the percentage of energy required to reach that speed. Percentage of energy of all energy in the universe, that is. Including the energy contained within atoms, whose conversion of < 700milligrams from matter to energy leveled Hiroshima. Just kinda a big NOPE.

    • @Maddinhpws
      @Maddinhpws 9 років тому

      +Hayden Bingham It is only hard to reach a part of the speed of light with chemical engines.
      As for the other things, you can make armor strong enough to withstand a tank shell without any problem with graphene.

    • @haydenbingham6988
      @haydenbingham6988 9 років тому

      Nolan Atkinson
      If it's taken two of the most technologically advanced countries on earth(USA and Britain) decades and billions of dollars to develop then how in the world are mysterious 'donors' going to be able to build railguns? Besides, in 2014 countries like Iran are trying to build nuclear weapons which was a tech that, once again Britain and the US, discovered how to build in 1945. If that's the time frame for other people to get railguns... I think it'll be fine.
