- *UA-cam MANDOLIN Tuner* is an interactive video designed to help you tune your instrument. Make sure you have your annotations turned on and then simple click the note you want to play. Change from "String" to "Sine" to change the note type.
If you are on a mobile device you wont be able to use the annotations to change strings. I'd recommend instead downloading our free tuner app on iPhone, iPad, or Android (Google Play).
iPhone
itunes.apple.com/app/tuner+/i...
iPad
itunes.apple.com/app/tuner!/i...
Android

I hope you enjoyed this video experiment.

Its better to tune with the tones at the end of the video. Just match the pitch. Starts: 1:10

Thanks!!!
One of the best online tuners. The sine wave function is very precise.
The video tuning is 99.9% accurate for mandolin standard GDAE, for those comments saying this made them break strings, you must have been doing something wrong.
A couple beginner tips:
-If you're breaking in brand new strings don't jump straight to the correct tune, but bring all the strings close and then start to fine tune from there.
-The closest string to your face is the fattest string.
-You don't need sine wave tuning.
-Tune up easily, don't go too fast.
-Invest in a digital tuner to help you learn to tune by ear, but it doesn't ever hurt to refer to a video like this to hear the base (bass, lol) note.
If you still snap a string, there may be a defect in the either the nut or bridge of your mandolin, or the strings that came with your instrument are old/cheap/defective. You should rarely use the strings that came with any instrument unless they string it for you (most in-store purchases will do this free of charge at well respected stores).
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thanks buddy, now I can play the damn thing..., a few chords and 10,000 hours later - watch out Vince Gill. haha
Tested this video with a guitar/violin tuning tool. 100% accurate.
Wow! This video really worked. Thanks for posting! 😊
Thanks, Nick! I'm glad it helped.
Thanks for the handy tuner!
I've never tuned a mandolin, just guitars, but it's easy at the beginning to sometimes be an octave or more above pitch until you develop your ear. Start way low, but not so low as to slacken the string on the tuning peg, and tune up gradually. If the string isn't wrapped right it will really slip and not increase in pitch much. Just remember that if turning the tuner gets very hard, you're probably way sharp and need to back down and start over. You can damage the neck by tuning real sharp, and the tension and release when the string breaks is not good for the instrument or your eyes!
thank you for resonance at the end!
They always do. Hence string theory
Best vid ! Second half at 1:10 is best!!!
I tried tuning the A string and it snapped around F#...
It happens
2 of my strings snapped
Yeah... what's up with that?
Thank you.
any tips for tuning? both strings should be tuned right not one flat one sharp
Some mandolin players intentionally leave one slightly out of tune to create a full, "chorus" effect.
Oh and tks for the final high tone ???
I've just bought this instrument! Trying to reach my 49 instruments goal!
I'm at about 22 so far. Not a pro at any of them but can play decently
Thank you!
Thank you! Solid job in providing us with this resource.. Much appreciated!
Thanks, Lavin! Good luck with your music!
Danke!
Thx mobe
Gracias
Has the same strings as the violin so can this tuner help with violin?
yes
INSAAAAAAAAANE
my E string broke. I'm an absolute expert at restringing guitars, mandolins I have found tricky to restring properly for whatever reason
nic
Funny... Don't let the strings chosen on the video confuse you. The highest string (the last of four that they audibly play) should be farthest away from you, closest to the floor, the smallest string. I'm willing to bet all these broken strings people complain about in the comments are them trying to tune the highest string first.
First
idiot
Tunings are out of register and WILL snap A strings. Mine was tuned over an hour with time to rest and still pinged the top A.
I've tuned many mandolins with this video.
I don't find these notes strong or well toned with too little time on each note.
the fucking string broke
Mine did too. E?
You're trying to tune the mandolin to the harmonic (the second high pitch tone). That pitch is for checking the tuning with the 12th fret harmonic.
Try a beginner's tuning lesson taught by a human so you get the basics of tuning before you move your bridge.
this is just a violin but in guitar form
Yoh!!? What's with the noise?? I like the system,, but the noise,,,,,.
Cant believe this is real
Thank you, you beautiful bastard!
You're welcome! That's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.
pain in the ass without another set of hands....first time tuning, fucking wait!!
Any chance of playing each note about 20-30 times and giving us all a chance or do you go out of your way to piss people off?
something is not right with this tuner, sounds a bit off in the start or something
Try using the sine waves to tune with starting at 1:13 or if your on iOS you can try the app (those sounds have been updated).
G- 0:00
D- 0:18
A- 0:36
E- 0:54
I was just trying to tune it, and my string just snapped!!! DO NOT trust this!!!
The tuning is correct. Your strings suck, or are old, or have been detuned for too long. or your mando is not made properly or a combination of any of these.
Changes too fucking fast. Spend a bit longer on each string mate, I am sure this is the reason why you have so many dislikes
The first set of tones helps. The following sets of tones do not at all.
