My first mandolin arrived today. I am fairly versed in guitar and bass which helps me "see" chords by inverting them to a degree. Your lessons are wonderful and are very clear and concise. I'll keep working and watching!
@@BanjoBen Do you also play the tenor banjo? Rite now my main focus has been the 5 string banjo. But ive also been learning some mandolin. And I have a tenor 19 fret banjo coming. From what ive read the chords on the mandolin are the same as the tenor.

I recently lost my left index finger. I'm finding getting used to playing the guitar a little difficult. I thought about a mandolin. What's your thoughts?
This is pretty good, thanks! But everybody shows these two positions on the mandolin. I've never seen a video where other chop chord positions are shown. For example an E or A chord. There has to be one for that, right?
do you mean an E or A shape that's different than this? In this lesson I teach how to play every major chord, including E and A, using this shape or a variation.
@@BanjoBen Thanks for your answer! Right, I only know these two shapes for chop chords. Are there more than this, for example for an E? I know the standard open chords but I have a feeling that's not what bluegrass mandolin players use for their chops. But maybe I'm wrong...

My pinky will not stretch that far without muting the other strings.

I have the same problem. I think is because I have a thicker neck as my mandolin doesn’t have a truss rod
Me too, but I keep trying and I have hope. In the meantime I strum only the three strings I can reach.
