Butter Jeep Engine Swap episode 1

- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- My 1994 Jeep wrangler (aka: Butter Jeep) needs an engine!! Well over a year ago I locked up the 4.0 liter inline six and it’s been parked ever since. On this episode of the Dirthead Shed it’s time to drag it back in the shop and yank out the old junk motor and I’ll show you how I’m going about a Junkyard LS swap .

It's finally back!
Back again!
Can't wait to see you guys collaborate. Awesome Friday!
@@thedirtheadshedI'll tell a friend!
Butters back tell a friend..
... and very close to being mid-engined even!
“A lot of times just welding the nut on there is enough to scare the bolt into coming out of there.” That’s been my experience as well : at that point, I’m not asking nicely. I am stating that eviction papers have been served and it’s only gonna get uglier.
Love Dave’s deadpan delivery -and clear, simple explanations. Sure wish yt had been around when I was learning to wrench! Subscribed, liked, and I’m going to watch all the backlog-plus spread the word any chance I get. 👍
Always cool to watch the real life guys work on their projects
This thing is kind of a mess. Let’s fix that
I am truly amazed at how much you can get done all by yourself. I am no mechanic, but i love watching automotive stuff like this. I wouldn't know where to begin. It takes me a full day to switch a plug in my mower! Love all your stuff, Dave! I have been a fan since glitter helmets and denim vests!
I-Can't-Believe-It's-Not Butter Jeep!
Haha. I’m gonna have to break the vest out again
New to your channel found out about you while you were installing 4 link suspension rear end in Dericks VGG 35 Ford
Doing this single handed and filming at the same time is a huge job.
Really appreciate the efforts.
I'll never forget this jeep It sat parked for years just up the road from my house. I would drive by it everyday and think to myself ''poor YJ"
It was so ugly!
More HP more torque and less weight, winning all round. Can't wait to see it driving again.
Yep yep! Now I just have to get it running
What I love about this channel and Dave it is still authentic and a bit raw not overproduced no added staged drama
J10 bed for sure 100% flat beds are cool, but that’s been done before.
We all know Nate you can make this work with the bed. Let’s go!!
I think you’re commenting on Dirt Lifestyles video
I just did this swap 5.3ls and AX15 with a Quickdraw into a 2008 JKU. I used Ebay motor mounts that bolted to the engine
and dropped right in. Everything lined up and I was able to use the old transmission crossmember. I did have mod the trans mount but not much. I'm just working on finish the wiring. It's running just want make the wiring look better.
Thank for this swap video and all your hard work.
That’s gonna be awesome
“See, we’re already getting to use my cool 4x4 stuff! This will be fun!”
Poor Dave is trying to reverse psychology himself 😂
I spend a lot of time alone
@@thedirtheadshedbetter spending time alone then being surrounded by the wrong kind of people 👍
@@thedirtheadshedThere’s a few thousand of us that are there with you in spirit buddy.
One of the great parts of watching videos like this is learning that there is an LS to AX15 bell housing! I'm sure my wife is going to ban me from these videos soon... to many ideas! Thanks, Dave!
That QuickDraw brand housing is super nice
It's good to see a UA-cam channel that is reading and interacting with people who watch there channel. Awesome person and content
I can hear the ducks crying. Great vid. VGG brought me here.
Those darn ducks.. I don’t understand that trend
Same here VGG introduced me to this channel. Like the real
Truck Norris cam and springs kit for the LS!
Great to see this jeep getting revived. Good luck.
I like the idea of that cam
This quickly became my favorite channel to watch! Keep it up Dave! Your crushing it
Thanks so much. Tell your friends!
There's something special about these square eyed jeeps. Love my yj
I agree, they are a great platform
Awesome to see Holly on board and awesome to see the butter jeep back!
I’m stoked on it!
Motortrend seems officially dead even on Discovery now and here's Dave still building sweet rigs to go off-roading, you spoil us
Trying to keep the fire alive!
"Enough to scare the bolt into coming out" LOL!!!😂
Just enough
I was sad when I found out DED wasn’t getting another season but so much happier that you and Fred are still putting out these videos 🤙🏼
Thanks for the continued support
We need a shop tour, inside and out, in all its glory.
I did a 4.8 in my 87 yj, ax 15 Holley terminator x , from start to finish took me 6 months, it was quite easy and so worth it👍
I can’t wait to drive it
"I found one of my favorite sweatshirts" Ha ha ha... we've all done that 100's of times! Awesome!!
Solo engine install Yoga. "The forward facing V8!" Very cool Dave. Thanks
I have a chicken named Butter that died today. And you are resurrecting Butter 🧈 Jeep. Love it. Great video as always. Thank you
Sorry to hear about your chicken
Dude you are one of the most intelligent and most creative guys? I've ever known as far as like you know online.
The skills you have It's so impressive
Can’t believe the stuff you get done by yourself! Hats off
Perfect choice Derek! It’s nice to see you reusing that Versailles drivetrain
Great minds think alike. 😂I used my Jeeps winch to get my 74 Blazer into the shop when we moved to our new place.
Hauling junk around… it’s what we do
What a neat build, I'm loving it 😍.
thanks for the grinder tip at 27:00. I'll have to keep that in my back pocket
No sweat!
Check out the flap disks that the sanding material wraps around the both sides. Expensive but worth having a few on the shelf @@thedirtheadshed
Great method! I work by myself and need to be creative to get the job done. For this problem, I mounted a winch on the floor of my shop in back of my toolbox. Just roll the toolbox to the side and boom!
I got a book off amazon for rebuilding LS engines, step by step instructions for tear down and rebuild, makes things way easier.
Nice! I should look into that
Dave you’re absolutely killing man!!! I’m loving all the variety in the channel. Looking forward to seeing Butter Jeeps heart transplant! I love the simplicity of older rigs. Contemplating swapping the 4.3l TBI out of my ‘85 4Runner for a 5.3 LS Stoked to see this series on Butter Jeep!!!
Thanks . I’m glad I finally started tackling this project
Im excited for the Jeep again! Love the LS platform in everything I have put it in. They just work. It'll slide in like butter!
I love your "palm pilot" notes hahahah pressure washer wand and hose and barrel pump lol
I still never got that barrel pump…
Procrastinators unite!, tomorrow....😂. Square headlight jeeps are my favorite. Can't wait for the next trooper episode though!
Hahaha
I really admire your work ethic Dave! Always impressed at your tenacity!
I appreciate that . Got to dig in and solve problems
Dang! Putting a 1/4 ton of trust in the throttle cable bracket! 😆
Yeah… strong like ox
I've missed this Jeep. Stoked to see the progress!
Awesome!, I'm just wrapping up my junkyard 5.3 LM7 swap into my '93 Wrangler.
Awesome start.....and great momentum. Fingers crossed that the motor placement doesn't cause other issues, but totally understand the choice.
Hope to have episode 2 out Friday. But a bonus video tomorrow
cool grinder trick, they make a extended flat head grinder expensive but sweet.
I’ve seen em. Pretty cool
It's a good thing to have the motor as far back as possible 👍
It’s way back there
@@thedirtheadshedit will jump good 😊
Dave your uploads have been 🔥
Isuzu with the sweet mudders , Nissan low rider , slammed D50 , insane 4 link set up with VGG and killer mountain bike videos.
Keep them coming . Cheers 🇨🇦
Love that jeep! My dad bout a brand new one in ‘88 and I grew up always wanting one 👌🤘🇨🇦
Better scoop one up!
Holy crap!!! Ya’ll are working on some military grade tinnitus with those toys!!!! 😂
When the universe aligns! Perfect episode haha.
Thanks! I’m just glad it’s back in the shop
Man, I wish I lived closer I'd be more than happy to lend a hand. You're working to hard working by yourself. Excited to see butter jeep coming back to life. Jeeps, f250s, hardtail mountain bikes......sounds like my house, although I have a 3rd gen firebird instead of a mustang II. You got good taste my friend! Keep the videos coming!
Very cool to see it back in the shop, and getting an LS!
Cool build! Glad to see it getting some love!
Awesome project and great work Dave, and the fact that your going solo is a BIG plus, alot of work and thinking goes into a swap like this. I once stuffed a Buick 3.8 odd fire with a T350 trans into a 77 custom stretched Toyota PU, turned out way better than I though it would and boy did it rock.
Hey Dave, didn't see a similar comment so I figured I'd chime in. Those reverse torx bolts need an "E" socket, should be able to find a set cheap at the parts store :)
Sincerely, a BMW owner
Thanks for the heads up
I remember the episodes of you originally building Butter Jeep, I'm looking forward to the next chapter
The original build on dirt everyday was so good
I thought I'd be pushing fewer vehicles once I got older. I truly believed that. I was wrong. I'm really good at it now though. Potentially all state.
We don’t seem to get smarter
That Jeep has so many cool parts, I’m sure it will go great with LS power
It should be a hoot
I like your adapter for grabbing the transfer case. I once had to R&R a 203 New Process with three guys and a floor jack. We all still have our extremities but will never do it again !
Nice tip on turning the grinding disk over. Thanks.
Glad you found it useful
Holley has a set of motor mounts with poly clamshells brackets for the YJ LS swaps. I’m doing a 4.8 with Nv3500 transmission and 241 case now.
Nice!
I'm just getting into this channel....I think you're going to be right there with VGG as one of my favorites. Can't wait to get into your content.
Right on . Hope ya dig it
Dave you made a lot of progress!! It’s really coming together
Dave and VGG are my favorites! Add a little Tony A and Cleetus in and I get nothing at work accomplished
My two favorite off roaders in one video
Good stuff Dave :) Looking forward to more Dirthead Shed!
i saw the Roadkill episode of this Butter jeep flooding out trying to cross Moab Creek/River Utah. What I remember about that particular program was allegedly how much pleasure Furburgers expressed when Butter Jeep died, my first thought was what an ahole. This episode showed DirtHead Shed David helping David Furburger! I have also seen this same kind of meanness, selfishness, and self-serving, sanctimonious attitude allegedly raise its ugly head on Roadkill Garage, toward Steve Dulich.
just discovered Dirthead Shed! Keep up the good work David.
Dave, it's about time.. I've been waiting on this build...
More to come
Exact same swap I'm in the middle of doing. Have an 87 that came with the 4 cylinder and a Peugeot with a few more neuturals than stock. Got a 2003 NV3550 and NP231J from a TJ and using a quickdraw adapter for a junkyard lm7 too. Excited to see how yours goes and definitely lighting a fire under me to get mine done for the summer and enjoy it! Rad videos as always
Thanks! Good luck on the project
I would love to put a LS in my xj , i can only imagine the overheating problems I would have. Finally got the 4.0 to stay at 195 no small task in AZ
Hey Dave, now that you putting a V8 in this thing, come play with the PNW4WDA racers over on the west side of the mountains! I am a third generation racer and am raising the fourth generation racers, and just started my own UA-cam channel! Thanks for the years of amazing content 🤘🏻
If you haven't already got the engine running and driving, drop the oil pan and replace the O ring on the oil pickup tube and add a brace to the pickup tube (like Jegs Part Number: 553-EGM-500 or similar) to insure good oil pressure on your new-to-you engine. LS engines have a low oil pressure issue on engines with some miles on them, this fix will insure solid oil pressure. Wouldn't hurt to replace the front and rear main seals also.
Good info. I’ll go over that in the next video
I used to watch you on Dirt every day. I did a SBC swap in my cj7. I should do a LS swap. That's my problem to is getting started on a project, but once I start I get into it. Super great ideas from you and Fred. Something I can relate to.
You’re lowered truck looks so good
Thanks! I think a few parts showed up this week!
Awesome, saw you on Dereck's 35 build glad you have a channel. Cool missed your humor and tec on dirt every day
I used one of those bell housings doing a ls3 in a cj7. Very nice piece.
Right on
If you get an infrared remote for your winch you can sit in the yellow Jeep and steer while solo winching.
Thanks
Grinder trick was awesome!
Glad you liked it!
@15:00 “These Jeeps can have a weird mix of both standard and metric. Kind of a weird generation” You mean EVERY generation of Jeep haha? I had to have three different sets of tools for my TJ and my JK is just as bad.
Great videos man! Keep it up!! I’m looking g at swapping the 3.6 in my JK eventually and this is some great motivation!
Right on!
They also make flap disc with a rounded grinding edge so you can grind with the edge of the disc
Those are nice looking. I don’t have any
Remember, farmers' barns are always catching on fire, leaving a healthy supply of Kubota Diesel engines out there ready to swap.
I have a customer that drives a 3 cylinder Kubota in a small Corsica and says he gets like 60mpg on the freeway
Daves the reason my truck has a bunch of parts in the back seat. Dirt is good....
Great job! Can't wait for the next video!
this brought memories of my old jeep shop! always enjoy watching you work on older jeeps
Thanks! They are cool rigs
Awesome Dave! The 4.0 was pretty cool. I'm always kinda of for the under dog though but its hard to go wrong with an LS. When my 2.5L started knocking I decided to go with 5.2L Magnum instead of the LS, I was able to make all my stock gauges in my Tj work with it. Looking forward to seeing how this goes!
Dude, how did I not know you had a youtube channel? I've got a ton of new videos to watch. Thanks!
Dave? With all those tools sorry dude you are a full fledged mechanic 😊 and you are making it look easy.
Love the content. So happy to see you making something happen for us dirtheads
I’m doing my best!
Came over from VGG what a great find!
finally got to finish seeing the complete video, ya having power at your fingertips very nice
that bellhousing is pretty affordable!! especially compared to most plate adapter kits. super cool
Found you from VGG. Now another channel to subscribe to. Love jeeps so this is great.
The LM7 5.3 fits like a glove. Looks like you can use factory exhaust manifolds.
It’s a good fit
@@thedirtheadshed awesome Dave.
You should put a D ring in the floor for winching non operable projects in.
I did that in the house garage. Works well
Great tip with the grinder disc!
Thanks! Glad you got something from the video
Great amount of work done! Good job.
I have a 2.5 in mine that i tossed a turbo on. Still slow but fun. That little cowl cover for your heater is still backwards. It's supposed to keep water out.😂
That little plastic thing is the least of my problems
@@thedirtheadshed I'm still gonna give you crap about it until you turn it around. 😁
Congratulations on 100k ! Love the content. Your brain is just geared for off road (and on road ) fabrication. Wish I had the skills you do
I have a buddy who is a fabricator up near Canada. He said you can cut and move the transmission crossmember wherever you want. It’s just steel. 🤷♂️
Honestly I'd be leaving the engine forward and taking every opportunity to lengthen that trouble maker STUBBY rear Jeep shaft.
I'll be damned. I just heard your named dropped by Derrick from Vice Grip Garrage. This is Scott the DMV Dude. Reach out brother. Let's reconnect.
Also didn't even know you had this channel to you helped vice grip garage with his 35 Ford truck so I'm glad I found you
Hahah looks like there is plenty of room up front in the corners for a couple of small turbos. 😜
Not this week
