    🚨Full Story 🚨
I (25f) don't like money talk, I keep it private because growing up I've seen the things people will do for money. I've seen it destroy my brothers. My parents died when I was little and I was taken in by my grandparents who raised me. It was a very privileged upbringing, but they also raised me to be frugal and grateful for what I have. I'm incredibly grateful for what I have, I don't show off or anything. I don't care for labels, most my clothes are thrifted. My husband (33m) and I live well within our means.
The problem is, our friend group has just found out that I'm rich and they're mad. We had friends over for dinner and the wife of my husband's best friend went into our office to take a private work call. We've let friends take private calls in there before with no issue. She scooped while in there and found documentation about my trust fund, my investments, etc. When she came out, she was mad and I thought it was just because of the call so I left her alone and continued cooking. She started telling everyone that I was actually rich, showing them one of the documents she had taken from the office. My husband took it off her and told her it was none of her business. At dinner she kept going on about me masquerading as poor because I thrift, have a cheap old car, travel in economy and don't offer to cover the bill when we go out.
    🚨Continue from here 🚨
Our other friends agreed and we pissed because had never said I have money, never offered money when one of them was struggling. We ended up cutting dinner short and asking everyone to leave.
Since I've had messages from them (mostly the women) being angry that I never told them I have money. I've even had a couple requests for money. One has already asked for 50k to cover their student loans because I had my college paid for - I had scholarships that covered everything. My husband has told me just to ignore them and that it's none of their business. His best friend has called and apologised for all this as his wife shouldn't have been snooping. I've been very much frozen out from the group, I've been told I won't be invited to anything until I pay my equal share and by equal share they mean I pay for everything.
AITA for not telling my friends I'm rich?

Our monthly grocery spending amounts to 500 usd. All of this because he doesn't spend money on useless things. He sets a budget and often avoids telling people how much money we have. Exactly! This reminds me a lot of my sister and her partner. They live paycheck to paycheck because although we let them live with us when they were just starting out, so they could go to college and plan for a good future, they decided to make very poor financial decisions like dropping out of college, eating out almost every night, buying brand new cars, spending a lot of money on a wedding, traveling, getting pets, and buying useless things like headboards. Meanwhile, we made good financial decisions like both of us going to and graduating from college, saving our money by only ever owning one old car, never going out on the town and rarely eating out (we saved a ton of money by not eating any takeout for over a year), and taking fewer vacations, got hitched and didn’t spend any money on a traditional wedding, only adopted a rescue puppy after a decade of no pets, and we’ve never owned a headboard in our entire lives. But now that my sister knows we have some savings in the bank, they act like we are in so much better of a place financially, and they are entitled to ask us for money that they have zero plan of paying us back, or even offering to do any work in exchange for the thousands we’ve given them. We got to where we are by hard work, and living well within our means. I find it insulting that people who live recklessly go around acting like people who are careful with their money are unfairly lucky. We’re not lucky, we’re just smarter with the money we have. It’s our money and they shouldn’t act entitled to it.

She is evil for looking and then spreading it around and acting entitled to *your* money. The problem seems to be that your lifestyle being one of low income also attracts friends that live in the same frugal manner. But they do it because they have to, where you do it by choice. And they completely resent that they thought you were “one of them.” Now they see you as “Elite” and therefore obligated to give what you have to help them. And if you wanted to, great. But it does appear that you should be looking for new friends that don’t harbor resentment for what you have.

That’s not something they should be concerned about. Just because you have a lot of money doesn’t mean you should be the one paying for everything and lending out money left and right. People stay rich by not spending money. If you are going out with friends the bill should be divided equally or by what you decided to get. The bill shouldn’t fall on you just because you’re rich. Being rich doesn’t mean that you want to pay for everything because you have money. Also it is nice to help friends out in bad situations but that doesn’t mean you need to give them a lot of money. I understand helping friends, I do what I can for mine and I’m always between blessings, but do you really think they would have stopped at small change like “cover $60+tip dinner just this once” or a “small bill til my next paycheck? So my lights/water aren’t cute off” These women literally jumped to asking for covering full dine outs as OPs “fair share” and asking for OP to pay for student loans? Haha yea something tells me if they had known it would have started small then grew to an exorbitant amount and if OP declined one time or hesitated even for a millisecond they would have been at her like rabid anklebiters

Turn up at your "friend’s" doorstep, barge in and start looking through her drawers searching for *_her_* financial documents, see how she likes it! NTA. The fact that OP has been paying her fair part seems immaterial to these people; she’s right, they expect her to pay for everything. How is that fair? I’m sorry, but these people aren’t friends. Time to block them.

Especially the one who was bold enough to go through your personal belongings then have the audacity to an attitude with you because she found out something that was none of her business more importantly she never had the opportunity to exploit.
