I have the Oneida dust cyclone system for a woodworking shop. Mine being a 7.5hp stand alone. That less expensive blower-vac has two things against it. Balance of the impeller blades and noise transmission. We can not do much for the blade balance and the vibration therewith; but, the transmission of vibration-noise from the system to the wall can be approached to dampen out those different frequencies. Spend the time to make a stand alone stand out of wood-soft pine and anchor it to the floor. Get away from that wall mounted thing. The vibration goes from the machine-vac into the wall and the wall is like a GIANT sound generator. Same way a base speaker works with magnet and that membrane of the speaker. Mount the cyclone and turbine with a thickness of rubber mat to absorb sound and vibration. That should kill a lot of those noises. Noise like that is not good for your nerves. Another secondary aid is to make a sound proof box around that air system and line it with a sound absorbing material. There is a company in western Canada that sells a foam/bonded mylar with pressure sensitive backing and the mylar faces the incoming sound with the soft side being your PS layer. Tell them your system and they can tell you which deadening material works best. They use this material in large boats and stationary construction for sound-vibration dampening. I put some soft foam/chrome mylar on the under side of a Chevy car hood and bingo away went the interior noise. My dust collect is outside the shop so I have only the sound of the air. Any questions just contact me. Vincent Rolfe

“The shop vac didn’t work very well, because I didn’t have it turned on half of the time.” AaaaHahaha

This is fantastic! Thank you! I just closed on the mortgage yesterday to build my shop and I'm getting all the ideas I can for stuff like this. I have the Versaflo mask system, so I'm not as worried about breathing dust, but I also don't want dust coating everything in my shop, since it will also be used as a garage. So I will definitely be copying a great deal of this. I've refinished hardwood floors most of my life, so I'm fine with the noise because I know what great hearing protection to use, but I don't think my neighbors will want to hear it, so I will likely work on some of the sound deadening features that Vincent recommended in his comment. I can't wait to get this stuff going! Thanks for sharing!

Two ideas to offer… put an overflow drain in the water bucket so you can fill to a predetermined level (maybe even automate the fill). Also, cut your pipe ends going into the bucket at a steep angle so you can bottom out pipe (dust collection tube) but not suck up water.

This is a big help for me! I do a lot of cutting and grinding with nonferrous metals, and my lungs are paying the price. This gives me some good direction. Thank you!

Very cool system. Great job with the redundant fire protection stages. Can't be too careful when your shop is connected to your house. It looks like you could also add a 'wall' between the two pipes in the first container that comes up about half way between the lowest point of the pipes and the top of the container to further hinder sparks ever making it to the 2nd pipe. I've got a woodworking dust collection already in place and will use your ideas to see if I can come up with a way to also use it for my blade grinder. Definitely gonna need a few redundancies in place to do that. Hot sparks meeting any residual sawdust in the end wouldn't end well ;) Thanks for sharing. Your set up is really cool.

Haha, you and I think alike, there's no such thing as overkill when it comes to not wanting your shop to burn down lol...great job man, great video! I have a similar setup, but I have a couple of large welding magnets in my metal can dust collector and I still wear a mask on top of all that!
One more thing, and it's from experience, I have tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears) from not wearing ear protection when I first started...so I am sure you are (well hoping you are) wearing hearing protection while all that machinery is running, tinnitus is hell when it first hits you, and there's not much you can do about it. Take it easy.

Great system. I have a Smock prerecord. I can't wait, hopefully you will give us a heads up if you hear anything more about the release!

why not put the input tube directly in the water so the vac has to suck it through ?

    • @bower230

Because it would get clogged and need a ton of force to pull. It would just end up crushing the container.

Does anyone have any experience just converting a woodworking dust collector to work for metal? I'm thinking of attaching an appropriate filter where the top bag is, a steel barrel on the bottom and combining it with a cyclone as well as multiple stages of spark arrestors. Wondering if it has been tried as this is the closest thing ive seen online to that idea.

That's what this is. Harbor freight wood dust collector switched over. Still working great every day. I am glad I put the water tub under the grinder and have the spark arrestor in line. I wouldn't feel safe without them.

Everything I build should then be considered overkill.
