There are lots of photos taken immediately before or soon after the battle in Verona that clearly show that. This explains why during the battle there were lots of soldiers struck by heath exaustion! Italian troops, on the comtrary, DID in fact wear their single-breasted cheap overcoats directly over their shirts - as they had done already in 1859 following French example.
