I use to live on the 2nd floor in the 1st house as the train comes into Lechmere Station from 1955 to 1966. I use to sell newspapers to people getting off the train from Boston at supper time.
Can you please explain to me what was the point of Boston tearing down the elevated structure of the Orange Line if over 30 years later, Boston's MBTA is going to build a elevated structure for the Green Line?
So only the Lechmere part of the area is elevated so it can go over the commuter rail tracks and whatnot before dropping back to the ground where one line follows the Lowell Line whereas the other one terminates at Union. My guess it's too costly to rebuild underneath to have a ground level Lechmere station but at the same time not much goes on underneath either that it disrupts business flow with the rumbling noise of the train above like the 'L' did.
Better to keep up with the times and keep some history than to be a city stuck behind the times and not be viable or relatable to the current generation. Sometimes change is good and beautiful. I love the new Boston. It's beginning to look like New York.
The old station is being demolished and a new one is being built north of McGrath Highway (where you can see the new elevated structure), and the new one will not be a terminal station, instead having the tracks continue west-northwest to Union Square in Somerville and northwest into Medford. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Line_Extension
My heart breaks! The original Lechmere station was always a part of my life 😞

Good point
Gonna miss that train.
Those trains are still gonna be in service for a while, just the old Lechmere station is closed.
I used to live here by North Point park for 3 years, memories of walking to Lechmere to catch the train to classes!
Great video!
Thanks!
Even Boston has lost it's soul. Everything looks too sanitary and modernized compared to the peak of existence, the early 80s.

You just strengthened my case. Taking on another city's character is a good thing is it?
Why would you want to emulate that sewer?
Oh god it was horrible back then. Elevated railways and highways blocked out the sun and it was dirty
Wait what happened to lechmere?
