Are Flavcity, Food Babe and Joey Wellness ACTUALLY HONEST About the Foods They Promote?

  • I saw this video by Joey Wellness.
In the comments section there were a LOT of people saying things like "it is a shame you are being paid to promote this. Do you even believe it?" and that made me wonder.
In the past, I have seen wellness influencers promoting certain products, but they are often promoting products secretly without you actually realising it.
For example, Flavcity has recently appeared in an article for maybe not fully disclosing the companies that he 1) has paid partnerships with 2) has invested in himself.
So for example, I might say "I recommend this food", which is fine.
BUT would you trust that I am being honest if that food company was paying me?
WHAT if you found out that some food companies are secretly paying me and I do not make that obvious to you?
WHAT if part of my sales pitch was to make you afraid of other food so the food I am promoting sounds even better?
I feel a bit bad for making this video because I don't think Joey Wellness did anything wrong as such. He openly disclosed the company that was paying him, after all.
But the sales pitch leading up to it does feel like it is dancing along the blurry line of exaggerating the health risks of other foods.
    What do you think?
P.S. At the end of each post, I remind you that my best-selling book, ‘Everything Fat Loss’ is currently on sale as an audiobook, plus digital/print versions from Barnes and Noble, Apple, Kobo, Google, and Amazon with an extra 16% off in the US. Please feel free to grab it before the price goes up (Iink in profile).

Thank you for drawing attention to this! The wellness podcast world is also rife with incentivization. It’s gross. I’m not having it.

Yeah. Of course every industry makes money. I am just not quite sure how I feel about this one morally, especially because a lot of the incentives are not disclosed or disclosed as quietly as possible lol 🙂

As soon as they try to sell me something, everything they just said is instantly SUS.

My pleasure. It’s something I have wanted to talk about for ages so when the first video landed on my discover feed I had to take the opportunity, even though I don’t have anything against the guy personally

I know this is not entirely the point of this vid but...I can't stand 'macro friendly' recipes that must rely on a specific branded ingredient to make the meal macro friendly. Ykno the one:
Recipe for high protein creamy pasta
    -light cottage cheese
    -diced chicken breast
    -dried oregano etc.
-some specific brand of expensive protein pasta that I would have to spend $50 shipping to send to my country
There's nothing wrong with making meals with 'healthier'/high protein alternative ingredients, but I think relying on a certain brand is just disappointing because those who can't get access to the ingredient won't be able to make the recipe and get the macros they are looking for. I think it's more helpful to make recipes that use general ingredients that can be substituted for similar macro benefits.

Absolutely no, they aren’t honest. That’s the problem with SM.

Agreed. I'm all for working the system. Upholding your obligations, etc . . . But, I'll decide for myself if I want the product. Please keep your, degrading, scrip read, unemotional sales pitch.

I don’t think many people actually care if products are being promoted honestly.
“Hey, I like this food because . You can buy it here”
That’s how ads work. I just dislike the whole “we have to fearmonger the normal versions of foods to sell the expensive replacements” lol 🙂

@BenCarpenter Agreed, the fear mongering needs to go.

Food babe is still around? It was more than a decade ago that her nonsense was being laughed at. Amazing that people still continue to give her enough attention that she has bothered to keep things going.

Hi Ben, I really appreciate your videos. They have been very informative and helped me on my quest to lose weight (an ongoing torturous endeavour that never seems to end).
I do hope I'm not overstepping but I could use some advice. I've been trying to lose weight for a long while (how long? How long is a piece of string?) and have been considering trying products like Huel to replace certain meals in my day (mainly breakfast as I barely have time to have a decent breakfast in the day and end up snacking like a madman by around midday). Are meal replacement shakes/products like Huel actually any good for weight loss or are they just another product that's going to be detrimental to my goal?
    All the best

My advice is to embrace the pain, push yourself further. You either have pain now via exercise, or have more pain later in life due to lack of exercise and poor diet.
As for diet, eggs, fruit for snacks, meat and vegetables. Don't buy snack food as anything you get in the supermarket is going to be around 400Kcal per 100g and that's not going to leave you feeling satisfied, you'll still be hungry. Look around online for other foods with a high satiety value.

Nutrition is quite complicated and highly dependent on individual needs. These snake oil salesmen are adding to a vast sea of online misinformation through overgeneralization.
Blood sugar spikes are normal and perfectly safe. Binge eating on the other hand is dangerous. People need to learn about these things.
