Hungarian actor-director legend Pál Mácsai's TEDx talk is an argument for the importance of theatre and its support. Why is theatre more important today than ever before? Why is it a fallacy that it can be marketized, and why is this fallacy so persistent? Among other things, Pál Mácsai answers these questions on the red carpet of TEDxLibertyBridgeWomen, on the stage of Katona theatre. Mácsai Pál a kortárs színház megkerülhetetlen alakja, neve összeforrt az Örkény István Színházzal, aminek alapító igazgatója, valamint állandó rendezője és színésze is egyben. Pályáját a Pinceszínházban kezdte. 1984-ben végzett a Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskolán, Kerényi Imre osztályában. 1990-ben rendező diplomát is szerzett. 1983-tól a Nemzeti Színház, 1989-től a Madách Színház tagja. 1993-tól szabadfoglalkozású. 2001-től a Madách Kamara művészeti vezetője, 2004-től Örkény István Színház alapító igazgatója. Pályája során olyan ikonikus szerepeket játszott el, mint Rómeó, Antonius vagy Cipolla. Rendezett Shakespeare-t, Csehovot, Millert, Brechtet, Örkényt és Spirót. Jelenleg az Örkényben többek között a ’84, a Solness, a Kertész utcai Shaxpeare mosó című darabokban láthatja a közönség. Akik nem csak a színházból ismerik, azoknak rögtön a nagy sikerű HBO sorozat, a Terápia pszichológusa, Dargay András karaktere jut eszébe róla. S bár számtalan Tv- és filmprodukció köthető a nevéhez, mégis a színház a legfontosabb számára. Szenvedélyesen áll ki védelmében, hogy óriási múltja és aktív jelene után jövője is legyen ennek a művészeti ágnak. Egy a közelmúltban megjelent Forbes interjúban úgy fogalmazott: “Ha én lennék a kultuszminiszter, bevezetném a színjátszást, mint iskolai tárgyat. Ott nincs képernyő, nincs mobil, élő emberek jelen időben, egymásra figyelve cserélnek gondolatokat, váltanak ki érzelmeket, közösségi élményben hatnak más emberekre.”

Pál Mácsai is an inescapable figure of contemporary theatre, his name is intertwined with the István Örkény Theatre, of which he is the founding director, as well as a permanent director and actor. He began his career at the Pince Theatre. He graduated from the Academy of Theatre and Film Arts in 1984, in the class of Imre Kerényi. In 1990 he also graduated as a director. He joined the National Theatre in 1983 and the Madách Theatre in 1989. He has been a freelance director since 1993. He has been the artistic director of the Madách Chamber since 2001 and the founding director of the István Örkény Theatre since 2004. During his career he has played iconic roles such as Romeo, Antonius and Cipolla. He has directed Shakespeare, Chekhov, Miller, Brecht, Örkény and Spiró. His current productions at the Örkény include '84, Solness and Shaxpeare's Laundromat of Kertész Street. For those who know him not only from the theatre, he immediately comes to mind as the character of András Dargay, the psychologist in the hit HBO series Therapy. And although he has been involved in countless TV and film productions, theatre is the most important thing for him. He is passionate about defending the future of the arts, which has a great past and an active present. In a recent interview with Forbes, he said: 'If I were Minister of Culture, I would introduce drama as a school subject. There are no screens, no mobiles, live people in the present tense, listening to each other, exchanging ideas, evoking emotions, affecting other people in a communal experience."
