I was worried at first when I started doing this thinking the fish would deter with the Sharpie scent, However, it worked and have been catching ever since .. Thank you for this Video.

Everything you do is awesome. Change my mind. Hopefully your local fly shop doesn't see this lol.

      Haha, Thanks!
Don't share it with a shop that has much thread inventory.

Great tip!! One thing that I have noticed with this method. If you color just prior to whip finishing, sometimes the marker hasn't fully dried and some of it rubs off onto the whip finish tool. Not a huge deal....just when you go to whip finish again and are potentially using a different color it will rub some of that residual marker off. Other than that this method works great!!

mmm, good point Sean, would have to color it and then wait a minute for it to dry before whip finishing.

Causes for poor tension technique. If you pull out thread and color and then use the thread the tension on the thread will be uneven. Uneven tension control of thread is the number one issue with new tiers and many who have tied for years. Poor tension control causes there to be a ton of issues including flies that self-destruct while casting or just one fly per fish.
You should just have a smooth release of thread while you put thread on a hook. So the bobin never changes distance between the place where the thread comes out and the hook.
I say buy black, white and tan and/or olive. Learn how to release the thread smoothly while you use your thread. It isn't more expensive to buy a third thread as opposed to coloring the thread. I use this tip of markers for ribbing on trout flies or doing heads on flies.

Great tip! Question, how does the sharpie hold up over time in and out of the water?

I haven't had any issues with bleeding.
I use this on streamers as well which get fished a lot more times than *most* nymphs.

New to fly fishing, but have fished for a while different species. Does sharpie put out a downstream scent that would slow the bite for the older, wiser fish?

      Same-
hard-core Bass angler and can “catch any fish anywhere” angler but humbled fly angler wannabe.
So far what I’ve noticed is when you’re fishing with a fly it’s not a “sit/bait&wait” presentation. So “scent downstream” isn’t as significant as the action and quickness that comes from fishing with a fly. Targeting Stream/River Trout with a fly presentation only gives the trout at best tops 3-4 seconds to make a decision to strike or not.
I worry more about the simple things, the minute details if you are truly concerned about scent you can always spray it with any of your favorite liquid juice…. “You like the juice, this juice
Is good” 😂 (old when it was good, SNL skit)
      Well crap this aint my page I shouldn’t even be replying 😂🔥🤷🏻‍♂️ 🎣 🐜 🐞 🪰

No, I don't worry about sharpie any more than any other synthetic. Craft fur, brushes, bucktail, marabou, all have scents to us that don't smell like a fish. Glue especially. Do you use any head cements or UV cures on your flies?
The only fish I do worry about scent with is Carp, I don't use any head cement or cures in any of my carp patterns. For any other fish, I see zero difference.

What is the difference between their regular thread and GSP? Why would one choose one over the other?

    • @BlueLineCo
      @BlueLineCo  2 роки тому

The other colors are thinner but not as strong.
No reason I would ever choose another thread over the GSP unless I had to have a colored thread that was more than I could just color.

@@BlueLineCo GSP is very slippery and I find that I have to use wax a lot.
