In this video, you'll learn how to add a gate to an existing fence and how to install quite possible the most secure gate lock ever made. Adding a gate to an existing fence can enhance the functionality and accessibility of your yard - which is exactly why I chose to build an additional gate.
To add a gate to an existing fence, you will need the following tools and materials (these are the exact materials I used in the video):
- 3" Power Pro Screws: amzn.to/45m9PhX
- Yard Lock Gate Lock: amzn.to/4cmQiR3
- Hinges (I bought mine off Amazon): amzn.to/3VDckJI
- Measuring tape: amzn.to/3RpCX21
- Level: amzn.to/3z1pszt
- Drill (or impact driver): amzn.to/4b3vi0i
- Circular Saw: amzn.to/3Ruv2AD
- Sawzall: amzn.to/3HcdeSI
Here are the Step-by-Step Instructions on Adding a Gate to a Fence:
Step 1 - Plan the Gate Addition:
First, choose the ideal spot for your gate. Ensure it’s easily accessible and fits the intended purpose. Additionally, I chose an area of my yard that had solid 4”x4” posts on either side.
Step 2 - Measure the Opening and Cut:
Measure the width of the opening where the gate will be installed. Standard garden gates are usually 3 to 4 feet wide, but you can customize based on your needs. If your existing fence is continuous, mark the section where the gate will be. Using a reciprocating saw, cut the fence to create the opening. Make sure to cut straight and smooth edges.
Step 3 - Build the Gate:
Take the cut section of fence from the previous step and add blocking to the sides. You will also want to add a diagonal brace for additional gate strength. Attach the blocking to the gate frame using 3” exterior rated screws (I personally like Power Pro Screws). You will want to “toe-nail” the screws into the existing fence rails.
Step 4 - Attach the Gate to the Fence Post with Hinges:
After attaching the support blocking to the new gate, place the gate in the opening. Ensure there is enough clearance at the bottom to prevent dragging on the ground and at the top for smooth operation. I recommend a 1/2" gap on the sides of the gate (between the new gate and the existing vertical posts) so that the gate can open and close without rubbing. Next, secure the hinges to the post and the gate frame. Typically, two hinges are sufficient, but I installed three hinges since my hinges were rather small. .
Step 5 - Install the Latch:
Although you can install any old gate latch, I decided to install the Yard Lock Gate Lock which could be the most secure gate lock ever made. To install the Yard Lock Gate Lock, you first should attach the latch to the inside of the gate post. Next, drill a hole through the fence post and feed the latch cable through the drilled hole. Next, run the cable through the lock box and then attach the lock box to the outside of the gate / fence post. Next, set your lock box combination and test the gate lock for successful operation.
Step 6 - Test and Adjust:
Finally, test the gate. Open and close the gate several times to ensure it swings freely and latches securely. Check for any obstructions or uneven ground that might affect its operation. Make adjustments to the hinges, latch, etc. (as needed) to ensure that the gate opens and closes smoothly.
Adding a gate to my existing fence only took one afternoon and it only required a few basic tools and materials. With careful planning, the right tools, and some basic DIY skills, I truly believe that anyone can successfully add a gate to an existing fence!

have used this product on one of my fences for 5+ years - excellent lock! What a weird little niche thing. glad you're giving it a shout out!
Definitely a niche thing haha thanks for watching!
I would add a solar powered light just above the combination lock so I can see at night. Obviously if you have a camera/light/motion detector then it’s superfluous- but just a thought. Great video and step by step mate!
Great idea! I have just used my phone light but your solution is way better. Thanks for watching!
BTW get these awesome solar lamps that fit on top of the cedar pickets with the light facing down. Very inexpensive on AMZ. Cheers.
Andrew I’m rather new to your channel but only just discovered the detailed step by step directions on your website! Terrific! You ought to plug that url at the end of every video too! I’m going to embark on this project and catalog the build - once this Texas summer cools down a bit! Cheers mate!
I appreciate and glad to have you here! Yea I’m trying to get my website off the ground but it’s been a struggle haha good luck with your upcoming project and that Texas heat 😅
A great video, as are all your videos that I've watched. I can't find a single thing to be critical of about this video. If I were doing the same thing, I would follow your instructions and do exactly as you did. I love to see your work. It's obvious that the longivity and quality of your work is of utmost importance as well as the beauty of the finished product. We need more workers like you out there. Keep up the good work and videos!
Luv the video. You're quite the comedian too! Love Power Pro Screws too. I had my gate enlarged to get the mower tractor through it. Great project. I was beginning to think you eloped off somewhere; glad you are back on UT. Thanks.
Haha I appreciate it, Patrick! Good to see you in the comments 🙏 and nope I’m still around - got a few more videos coming soon as well!
Like the way you made the gate swing in,love that lock!
Yea I had to do that I could have the latch on the inside! Thanks for watching!
The best deterrent I have found to keep people out of your yard is 40 Kgs of canine on my side of the fence.🐕 Make sure when you are out in your front yard it is as well so everyone knows this is a protected piece of property.😅
Great video! Thanks for explaining how to "toe nail" the screws and explaining weight distribution on the gate.
Thanks Shana! I’m glad it was helpful!
Excellent video! Very detailed information and suggestions for hardware. The lock looks pretty dependable. I appreciate these types of videos; I can't do the work, but I know how it's supposed to be done when I hire someone. TY
👀 love the solar powered light idea!
Also, maybe add some pavers where the door’s swing path is to keep it clear of grass/vegetation?
Right! And agreed - I have to do something with that dirt area for sure!
We love yard lock!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I’m wanting to redo our gates with a gate lock so thanks for the info.
I love watching your vids knowing darn well I don't have the skill or want to 😂 you are a pro😎
I appreciate it BUT I totally have faith that you could nail this project 👍
@@AndrewThronImprovements your faith in me is premature 🤣🤣🤣
This lock is really secure! A must have!
Great video. You’re right, I would move the handle to center it between a board.
I appreciate it! And yea I think that’s going to bother me enough to force a retrofit!
This was an easy-to-follow tutorial! I love the Rober Vaughn cut-ins.
I appreciate it!
All I can see to take it to the next level would be add some blocking to the hinges and latch so that it would move the gate forward inline with the rest of the fence.
I love the lock but I don’t have a gate! Nice job. Don’t think the handle is off.
Excellent job, just move the handle.
I appreciate it - Probably this weekend haha
You made that look so easy, wish I had that skill! Good job man! Final product looked great! I like that gate lock too, came out looking nice.
A great idea! Thanks for sharing and great commentary
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Great video 👍 Andrew
Great video! Perfect timing for my yard
Good luck with your project!
Great work . Thank you for ideas
Thanks for watching!
Great Video ! Learned a lot. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thank you for the information.
Welcome Jim! Thanks for watching 👍
Now that is a great idea. Definitely need to get one for my gate. Great job with video. Simple. I LIKE THAT!
I appreciate it and thanks for watching!
Hmmm? I love the idea of a combination lock but we come and go through ours so much that I think I’d hate having to put in a combo. Sure I could leave it set to open. But I’m pretty sure my wife and daughter wouldn’t. Maybe I’ll see if they have a different lock for our new gate. Great video!
Yea mine is almost always set to open. I only change the combo when I am going out of town or something!
@@AndrewThronImprovements I do love the design and matching hinges.
Awesome, thanks for the tips. Now just waiting for the rain to go away so I can start my gate.
Thanks for watching! Good luck with your project 👍
Nice job. I like that lock.
I appreciate it!
Pretty cool little gadget. Wonder if it would work on a double swing gate
I’m glad I came across your video. I just started doing work in my backyard and was trying to figure out what I was going to replace the existing padlock and chain with. Thanks for the idea
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with your backyard!
@@AndrewThronImprovements thank you
Absolutely love the gate lock. I could totally use that to replace my rusty latch!
You should! Thanks for watching!
This was very helpful! I am wanting to do the same thing to the back of my fence!
I appreciate it! Good luck with your project!
@@AndrewThronImprovements thanks bro!
I would have made the gate flush with the front when closed. That would probably require firing out with an extra 2x4 or so. Overall, great job!
An informative, easy-to-follow video. 👍 Did you have to edit out any swearing when the fence fell on you?! Seriously, great upload. 😊
Haha my foul language was smothered but the gate. Thanks for watching!
The only thing different I would have done was take about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch off the bottom of the panel so that the top of the door panels matched up flush to the top of the fence. Other than that, looks and works great!
Interesting. That lock is weird though, very secure on one side but from the other side it is just the press of a latch. If someone wanted to get in they could jump the fence and open from the inside.
Not sure what the solution is but if you are worried about security I would add something to the top of the gate/fence to prevent jumpers, maybe some anti-climb paint
Need to look at the ground leading up to the gate next. Can’t keep it grass 😮 p.s. I would like to the Gate Lock Please
I really appreciate your videos! Off topic though, what kind of shirt is that and where did you get it? Thanks
If you don’t mind me asking where did you get the stands at? I checked Amazon and I didn’t see them. Thanks ✌️
you should've hinged in on the front yard side so it would be flush with the rest of the gate, or was that a "troll" as well? Other than that, nicely done!
Haha not a troll - The problem is that the latch would then be on the "outside" of the fence. I am not super familiar with a way to mount the gate / hinges so that it opens inward but is flush with the outside.
✨🏆✨
Nothing I would’ve done differently but this is something I’ve wanted to do to my fence! Glad I saw this
I appreciate it and good luck with your project!
I don’t see the problem
So just a warning the amount of times you show and push the screws it’s coming off as a advertisement without the warning at the beginning of the video
Hey Daniel - it is a paid advertisement and you should see the disclosure in the top right corner when the video starts. Thanks for watching!
Not exactly criticism, but I'd say stain that fence and make it pop!
It’s on my list!
Looking forward to the video! Good time on this video. I just got an apartment with an enclosed patio. Apparently the previous tenant took the gate off the fence and used it for firewood. Landlord says they aren't responsible for replacing it. So lucky me!
12:34 if you wanna hop the fence and open it for all your hommies tryna rob that joint. You’re welcome. 😂💀
What’s the point of putting a lock if you can open it from the other side?
Haha yea it’s definitely a “Keeps honest people out” sorta thing.
