While I used OBS for these tests, the advice holds true regardless of your choice of software (as it just sits in front of the encoding deeper down anyway).

This is definitely the best, easiest and most comprehensive tutorial I have seen on this matter. :) Thanks for doing the comparison Blunty, you definitely saved me a couple of hours of work. :)
Yay obs tutorial thanks so much
The BEST breakdown I’ve ever seen on this topic. Thank you for creating this video!
I was searching for the explanation and quality comparison!
Thanks!
At last, a video that makes sense ✅
finally a good tut that explains the utility in different setups. Thank you.
Wonderful tutorial, Blunty. Not only do you describe that the settings mean, but WHY they are applicable to specific situations (ie. explaining why "it depends"). Good advice here, folks.
i'am so glad i came along with your video.....you fix my problem man....I LOVE U MAN
Wow, crazy how far tech has evolved since you posted this! I am using a 4070ti super oc with 16gb and a Ryzen 7950x. A gigantic leap since I had my first pc that had a 512mb, yes, that is not a misprint, a 512mb hard drive lol
Great info and advice, Blunty. No perfect solution for everyone, but knowing what the end product will be is key to choose settings.
thank you! Super helpful explanation! Most videos I've seen just walk through the settings they use and don't give much other background.
WOW! Thank you! Finally something authoritative from someone who can actually show the reality. I don't record games but do video podcasts, sometimes live streamed and sometimes recorded. I recently started to look (again) at OBS and came to the conclusion it wasn't an option until I upgrade my system (currently 2015 Macbook Air) ... ok ... please keep the laughter down to a gentle roar :-) .... when using OBS the CPU usage ranged between 28% and 33% only, yet the fans start spinning so hard it is implausible with the audio ... BTW I'm using an external blue yeti mic on a boom. So now I'm looking at new systems and weighing up whether I need better CPU or a really good GPU ... already written off the M1 chip for all of this which also excludes the new iMac 24" ... so now into the 27" iMacs and they have AMD cards 5500XT (8GB), 5700 (8GB), 5700XT (16GB). The decision I have to make is whether to go for the [CPU/GPU] 3.8GHz 8-core Intel Core i7 with the 5700XT (16GB) or the newer 3.6GHz 10-core Intel Core i9 with the older 5500XT (8GB) .... yes I could go top of the line on both but this is already pushing the budget and I want to get what's needed instead of excess. What I've taken from your video is it depends on which I'm doing. Just unsure which is the wise move for 'normal' video as in not gaming videos. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Super clear, helpful and enlightening. Thanks! Looking forward to the next vid!
Kind sir.
I don't know why I only just now found this video, but thank you very much for this informative and demonstrative video.
I KNEW I should've been using CPU encoding for streaming cause my CPU can more than handle it, both old and new PC. But my friends always blindly tell me to use GPU, I knew something was off.
Thank you good sir that sounds like the narrator from LittleBigPlanet!
I try to keep myself well informed, and when you said people were just parroting bad information to others...I got worried as I try to help other streamers all the time. Thank you for confirming the information I was giving, I am secure again in my knowledge XD
Hi Blunty, just letting you know that AMD's VCE encoder has come included with OBS Studio for about a year now.
The plugin you mentioned is more or less the parent project whose stable versions get included in OBS Studio. Just thought I'd let you and others know that *it does work out of the box*, they do not have to seek out this plugin for the function anymore.
M. Birchman thanks for that. I could've sworn I've been using GPU encoding out of the box for the last year.
Finally i have found a useful video, thanks a lot
Just what I was looking for! 👌
Very professional and well explained video. Thanks Blunty!
Very helpful video even today!
complete explanation.
thank you man
I've spent weeks and weeks testing these settings on OBS and I couldn't agree more on the research you have spent and shared with us here!!!
Some things I would recommend for those who want to stream: The lower the resolution and frame rate you couple with any given bit rate will result in better looking *high motion scenes*. Also, why use OBS vs OBS Studio?
Anytime you have a lot of detail to render on the screen such as running through grass or otherwise rendering a copious amount of particle effects, you will notice a lot less "chunkiness." Again, this is for a given bit rate. You can, on both CPU and GPU encoding, crank them up for higher quality, but that sacrifice usually* isn't worth it. Try that out for yourself.
If you often run static screens with not much changing in them - like for instance a podcast or a game of poker, you need not worry. Running at a higher resolution will showcase the detail in your content and can, and will, be a good thing! Just beware of those high motion screens, which occur a lot in gaming.
A last little note on the whole streaming subject using OBS specifically, there are mainly two versions on OBS website. There is the studio version and the original version. I find, that if you want to go beyond the 1080p barrier, to use OBS original. (Unless that has changed since this comment!) I prefer using Original OBS for recording games and I prefer using OBS Studio for Streaming. - Just a little side note, I no longer stream so this isn't a plug hahaha.
Thanks for the informative video Blunty. Much
A banger video my man. Good job!
Literally the only thing I could find regarding hardware vs software encoding that wasn't 2+ years old, and it actually shows the quality difference to boot! Thanks man, you've gained a subscriber.
I do have one question though. Does nvenc result in a higher filesize than x264? I'm guessing the difference is minimal thanks to the equal bitrates, but I don't really know. I'm kinda new to this whole thing.
Praise be this man; thanks for insightful video.
Thanks for the info, it was very useful
Really helpful & well explained! (Also well recorded, so we SEE it works :-) Thanks!!
Thank you Blunty!
thanks, broke that down simply and easy to understand nice!
Absolutely fantastic video. Invaluable to a streamer. Thanks a ton.
Excellent video. Thanks for the advice and for doing the work of testing.
Was wondering why my GPU usage was going up when I thought I was using cpu for stream I hadn’t switch the encoder. Thank you!
Finally a good video about these things.
really helpful thank you
Thanks! I Have a Ryzen 3200g and I want to buy a RX 6500 Xt to Stream, but the graphic card dont encode H265 (used to stream). Thanks to your video, i'm going to buy it and use CPU encoding in OBS!
This was very informative. Thank you
Thank you for such a great and simple video.
Thank you so much! I've been looking for a good guide to set up my obs. My pc is basically a Glados potato, so it can barely stream on some settings. This was really helpful!
Thanks great advice 👍
Thank you verry much , subbed and liked
After all this time of being told just do this and just do that by youtubers about 1080p OBS settings. I feel like its been a waste of my time, but after seeing your video it feels so relieving. Thanks!
Hey Thanks Man
im learning so much *soaks it up*
very good and useful Video keep it up
This was so interesting to learn! Awesome video! I just randomly found it haha
Great video thanks!
GREAT! Thank you so much!
So if I have an 8 core cpu, I should always use cpu encoding.
TeamRabbit Alec lucky bastard
yeah, my 9700k runs great while pushing 90mbs
I have 16 core tf
Thank you♥️
Thanks for this, I was so confused on why my streams were not the same as they used to be and it was because i switch my encoder to hardware on accident. I would be at 5% CUP used and it would still look bad.
This was rilly heplful thanks
Great video
Thanks for the info Blunty!
thank you sir
Ryzen 5 with rx 580 vs i3 9100f with 1660 for game streaming
explained so well and helpful but one question when u got an old cpu like and i5 6500 cpu with onboard dedicated graphics how do you optimise for this for a cleaner and less choppy/laggy video recording experience when it comes to editing if you can get your hand on a psu & gpu for a specific pc if can answer this it would help me out on what to and settings to set in either obs/elgato softwares for encoders.
i made one upgrade but having issue getting hands on other hardware required.
Blunty, thanks for a great video, learn a lot. I do have a question, does OBS take advantage on all cores/threads on 1950X using CPU encoding on OBS?
Yeah I try stream gaming on my cpu and it was lagging I use my integrated GPU and it was no lag
Thank you this video really helped me!
Your voice is amazing
Ty very helpfull!
Thx so much! o.o
ur a god
Thanks ^-^
Awesome tutorial, I know this comment is 3 years after the video, but I am trying to stream from my xbox to my laptop, which has a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, my internet isn't great but I stream with 720p and 1500kbps bitrate. Therefor, I should use CPU right?
Cheers.
i have R7 3700x with 2070 16b for gaming but also have r5 3600 16 gb but no gpu! i want to use R5 for streaming for GPU should i use? 1660 nvenc or x264???? Thanks in advance!
I have an i7-9700k with a 2070 what should I be streaming on
OBS FTW
You got an epic fucking voice tho
that voice over.. dam
Eerily reminded me of Stanley Parable's narrator.
OwO
Great info, thanks for taking the time to explain that!
This was useful information! Thanks!
great tut thanks so much
