Lezzet Abbott talks about how the little things in this miraculous life are part of a much bigger picture.
Biography
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, her photographic journey began in April 2012 when she was captivated by a sunflower that appeared in her garden and she has not been able to find the “OFF” switch since. Her acute eye for the ‘little things’ brings the everyday overlooked wonders around us to the fore in her unique style that captures the soul and imagination of the viewer.
Lezzet has had no formal photographic training and in 2015 made the change from a bridge camera to a DSLR which was donated to her by an anonymous miracle worker who recognised her talent of showcasing her natural ability to artistically recognise how the magic, harmony and balance of a photograph just works. She is inspired by the things that the average rushed individual does not see, urging the onlooker to slow down and notice what a beautiful planet we live on. Preoccupied mostly with the dandelion she has earned the appellation of “Dandelion Queen” for her whimsical and distinctive interpretations of these common weeds.
Her aptitude for the craft has inspired many to recreate similar works while uplifting others with her talent. Her love of the less loveable has made her popular among her peers by changing the way people perceive the less popular creatures, especially spiders, as she has a firm belief that every living thing has a valid reason for being here and deserves an equal amount of respect.
Her photographic platform, Meraki Imagery embodies what she does with her insatiable taste for photography; pouring soul, love and creativity into her work, imprinting the essence of herself in her creations. Lezzet exemplifies the notion that it’s not about the gear, it’s about how much you connect with what you love to do, which can be applied to life in all areas, not only photography.
Having sold a number of her works through captivated clients and photographic exhibitions, her flair for artistic creation within her love for the craft is proving to make her popular amongst people who are drawn to her ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.
She was a guest speaker invited to present a talk on Macro Photography at the 2015 Photo & Film Expo that generated positive feedback on her refreshing outlook regarding the genre of photography as well as photography as a whole.
Meraki Imagery's very first limited edition 2016 calendar was launched at the end of 2015 which was received exceptionally well by the public.
In March 2016 her images were featured on television in the nature programme 50/50, much to the delight of her family.
Her works were recently published in the VSS Creative Photography Club Coffee Book and several of her images have been used by OutdoorPhoto as print demonstrations for their newly launched print division.
Moving forward Lezzet hopes to enhance her creative spirit by fully embracing and embodying what she believes to be her calling.
