The Neuman is fatter and richer to my ears but I remember working as an engineer in NYC and our U47 broke and was being repaired and our other Neumans and AKG 414's were being used in a major session and I needed to do a vocal session in our small room and I used an Audio Technica 2020 compressed it and EQ'd it with a Pultec Tube EQ and the client loved the sound I got!!!

My second mic or back up for ruff vocals is the Rode NT1a. Going thru the Apogee Symphony Desktop with the Neve preamp emulation and Pultec eq plugin really makes it sound great.
@@sun4502 Well I can only speak for interfaces I own or have owned, current my main one is the Apogee Symphony Desktop, which is definitely on the higher end price wise as far as 2 input interfaces go. Which one do u think is better for deep voice so it doesn't sound that deep but still can get great recording quality for cartoon voice over work?? thank you in advance 💕
The Neumann sounded a little smoother than the Audio Technica. The Audio Technica had a little bit of sibilance during the talk test that I picked up on. The EQ could always be adjusted to get rid of that and it wouldn't even take much. My favorite $100 mic is the Sterling Audio ST-51. It definitely sounds great to me. I also have a Groove Tubes GT-50 mic that sounds phenomenal. They're all quiet for sure.
There is a clear difference but when mixed you wont be able to tell which one is from which microphone. The price difference also don't justify the difference in quality.
If you know what you're doing with mixing and mastering, with a little extra attention to the EQ, you can get the AT2020 to sound really good and comparable. I recorded my new album with a $6,000 microphone (Blue Bottle), and I left one song on the album that was recorded with the $100 microphone (AT2020), and with professional mixing and mastering it sounds just as good. The song I recorded with the $100 mic was actually released 2 days ago on my channel. It's called "It's Going Down".
Thanks for the review. I've worked with both and to me the difference becomes more apparent when the mics are pushed in the high end with saturation where Neumann has much more smooth and musical resonance on vocals. That being said, a good pre amp/effect chain should deliver great results with either option.
Talking about the singing, I'm not a fan of that modern style but even I must admit, you're really good! You were able to evoke an emotion in me even while I had a slight guard up. Props to you, man!
Better, but not $900 better for sure. if you have a good, well-controlled and soulful vocal don't worry too much about microphones. However do pay attention to the acoustic environment of your room. Of course, get a pop-filter
A lot of the issues with lower budget mics (which is pretty much all I can afford), are eq issues, especially if you are using the same mic on several different sources. The mid boost (or whatever freq your mic is boosted at) will collect like dust in the corner and you will need to eq (sweep) to see (hear)clearly.Of course this will apply to even higher end mics, but more so with budget ones. I have the AT2020 and cannot afford the Neuman, but I have found several mics that fit in-between these two and try to use several different ones in each song to add variation. You can go far even with a limited budget.
Excellent review, straight to the point, direct comparison between the two mics, no rambling like most other reviewers, just the way it should be, well done! Yes, there is a big difference between the two, but 10 times? Apart from capsules, components and build quality are on par. 900 dollars for a capsule? I think not!
The difference is clear! However, the AT 2020 held its own at its price. You'll need to do a lot of EQing on the AT 2020 but the TLM 103 sounds more musical. These little nuances make a huge difference to the overall output of your production.
Hey just thought I’d save you guys some time. For anyone who doesn’t have an idea of the types of mics out there. It's the addition of good gear, good takes, good room tone, good mixing and good audio interface that will make a difference. The mic alone in itself will help but the difference, in my opinion, is really heard when you "upgrade" your skills and gear. I've done great vocals and recording with the AT2020, and only got better with a TLM 103. I feel like I need less tweaking in post prod with a good mic! Great video, thanks for your work!
yet another good lesson that content is everything. Really, everything. Well, production skill and technique, also. With today's technology, the only reason to buy a Neumann is to impress and/or reassure clients who come into your studio.
I'm listening to this through a pair of studio monitors and they sound quite the same to me, the difference is definitely not day and night like what you'd expect from a x10 price bump. If you're doing this for a living then you might as well get the best stuff that's available but if you're looking to record stuff at home then it makes zero sense to me to go for such an expensive microphone.
The difference about the sound between two microphones is the resolution. You can hear at the high frequency for example: "Ssss.." or " Relax..." Yes, the “resolution” is the difference. The TLM 103 was very nice to here in this example, it was present clear and dynamic, whereas the AT2020, even though it was great, missed the depth and clarity that the TLM 103 had.
that is one great review & impressive kick ass singing my friend, thanks & greetings from Slovakia :) p.s. just waiting for bought Neumann TLM 103, excited :D
Sir, I'm a be honest. I forgot we were comparing mics when you started singing. Your voice is magical! 💖💖💖 but both mics did sound good. Couldn't tell the difference. Must be a longevity thing.
both mics are worth the price for sure! Th at2020 has a very nice high end but lacking a lot of low end imo but the neumann just has a super smooth low mids and highs however I do feel the highs in neumann tlm103 is a lil over boosted but still sounds amazing! Could you try to include the at2035 next time ed? Keep up the good work man!
from this video, I hear no perceptible difference except I just hear more puffy air sounds from the AT2020 when you talk. crazy. I have the cheap one and it's perfect for lectures.
I'm most likely deaf. I listened to the singing test with my eyes closed, waiting to hear the same part repeated, first with one mic, then a second time with the other, like the intro test. Then Edward started talking showing the test was over and I was like "what the heck, I thought that was just one microphone". If you really know about audio then it means you probably have a nice studio and probably have the money to spend on that Neumann, so do it, I guess, I mean those who know will really hear the difference, I guess. If you're a normal person like me then you probably won't care to spend so much money for that, most people will not notice anyway. Big thumbs up for the AT2020, well done! Awesome punching above its waist!. For the Neumann, I guess it does what's supposed to do for the price, so nothing special haha :P.
Hi Edward. First, thank you for this review. I have to say I really enjoyed it. Secondly, I found your music on UA-cam.Music.. but I have yet to find the exact song you use in this test. What is the name of it, and is it out officially? I absolutely felt every single tone in my body brother. I'm a rapper and are looking to upgrade my studio equipment. I was looking at TLM 107 but I feel its a bit expensive. Not sure I can afford it. But 103 is very interesting. Did you ever test the tlm 107 BTW? Is there a big difference, if you know? All the best 🙏
To be blunt the difference in audio is not far, atleast when using it the way demonstrated in this video. The $100 AT2020 is perfect for voiceovers while it's not as warm as the TLM 103. To maximize the performance of either microphones use it with a pop filter to remove those cringing p's. A reflection filter would also help to isolate the vocal and even reflect more bass from the vocal to make it sound fuller and warmer.
This is also dependent on the voice being used. I hated the sound of my own voice my entire life until I heard it through a Neumann TLM-103. Now I consider my voice suitable for voice over work. Maybe it is my own perception but the Neumann really brings out the richness on the bottom end of voices that need that boost.
Great job and you really have a great voice. It is certain that there is a difference for me I use the Newman with my guitar and I see a good difference compared to the 2020 audio. Have you already tried the micro SE? à
You sound amazing on both of them, so i think that's the proof that you dont need to spend thousands of dollars to sound amazing its all about vocal skills :)
I purchased my at2020 at Long and McQuade and the professional at the shop recommended me the at2020 over every other mic I was willing to purchase...I had 2000$ ready to spend on a mic and I knew he wasn't out for my money because the at2020 brand new released only cost me 200$ at that time. I asked him "why the cheaper mic?" And he told me flat out it was the best bang for buck mic and quality wise was better than the ones I wanted. I asked him "how you figure?" And he said trust him, it's all about your engineer. Facts!
Good work brother. What bugs me about mics, is getting a better mic does so little. I'll hate what I record and want a better mic, but I know the mic isnt really going to change much. Everything else needs to be improved before a better mic will make a difference.
Having a properly treated recording space will do you a world of good, regardless of which mic you're using. The bonus is....adding a more expensive mic to a well-treated recording space will lead to exceptional results.
Hi there and thanks for this video, just a question plz❤ Is it true that if we use an XLR to usb adaptor cable we can't have the maxum quality of our mic on the phone or no? I would appreciate if you answer me ASAP❤
if your not a pro - or not making any money on the mic- at2020 stands on its own. not as clean as neuman, but very respectable. thanks for that nice singing
I own the TLM 03 and TLM 02 I am currently waiting on a Large WA 47 Jr to test out and see if I can get a different sound. I love my Neuman though. I like to collect microphones
Even when listening on a smartphone the Neumann sounds smoother, as if it had a bit of additional saturation/multiband compression on it, giving it a very "stable", expensive, pleasantly compressed sounds. But AT2020 is sounding very nice too
am i the only one who doesn't hear a difference. Try closing your eyes and picking out the expensive one, pretty hard to do. im using 400$ monitor headphones with 10-50000 frequency range
Hmmm would like to see you try other vocal styles. DO some belting style stuff bro. Show us what that mic can do. Imagine yourself playing LIVE.... try recording outdoors without walls to deal with.... ect...
is the audio technica at2020 a compy of the SE2020i ? i use that at the moment, but im dunno weather to get the neumann 107 or the ISomic, as i am gettign the isovox 2.. the isomic mic sounds incredible but theres not enough on it, the sound of it and design sounds like its maybe incredible.. but with the neumann 107. i KNOW what im getting... more sididng with teh neumann 107 but i really want to try out the Isomic.. as for the 103 vs AT2020... TBH the sE2020 is what AMy winehouse used for ther first album.. thats only a £200-300 mic and its also what i use.. i have a neumann 105 hand held condensor mic and for my voice at least, the SE2020 doesnt capture it as well as the Neumann.. for the average person, id just get the AT2020 its a different sound but just as good.. for PROS people been doing it for years and real musicians so to speak.. the subtle difference is night and day.. its like the difference between a hit and a flop... but to most people its barely noticable lol.. cheap mics these daysa re incredible , great for demos even polished stuff.. but that iconic sound only neumann has AKGs are on alot of modern records too.. i need help with the ISOMIC vs neumann 107.. anyone help??
The biggest difference I heard in headphones is the noise floor (I think that's the right term?) The 2020 sounds a little more "noisy" in general, and you can hear a little more stuff between words, while the TLM 103 feels like I'm sitting in the room right next to you. But in general, with a little processing, I imagine the 2020 should be fine for any beginner. It's not going to be the limiting factor to your music.
Im just curios bro, how you connect microphone to video? Because I know the way to record it in some sound recording program like Cubase or else and add it to video. But how to connect it to video directly while you sing? In case of phone or else. Im not sure with which device you recorded :)

Thanks so much!! 🙏🏻
that is one great review & impressive kick ass singing my friend, thanks & greetings from Slovakia :) p.s. just waiting for bought Neumann TLM 103, excited :D
Thank you for watching!!
Just ordered that TLM 103 can’t wait 😊
your tutos are just amazing
Thank you 🙏🏻
Sir, I'm a be honest. I forgot we were comparing mics when you started singing. Your voice is magical! 💖💖💖 but both mics did sound good. Couldn't tell the difference. Must be a longevity thing.
I was watching this video with my tv, had to come with my phone to leave a comment that broooo ur singing is really good, gives a reallyyy chill vibe,
both mics are worth the price for sure!
Thanks for watching! I'm doing a comparison soon between the AT2020, AT2035, AT4040 & AT4033... stay tuned, it's going to be a fun one!
@@EdwardSmithMusic DANGG 🔥🔥🔥
I have it and to be honest, the highs never were a problem. Maybe its just taste or my voice that goes well with it.
Hey i love your new intro! Pretty sure this new content satisfies my comparison curiosity💪💯
Thanks Angelo 🙏🏻
from this video, I hear no perceptible difference except I just hear more puffy air sounds from the AT2020 when you talk. crazy. I have the cheap one and it's perfect for lectures.
wow thats crazy! with a good mix cant tell. great review!
Thanks for watching!!
Omg. Decided to leave a comment. You sound amazing with both ahahah
Wow the performance of AT2020 is amazing and you are doing so great with you voice !!! Good reviews
According to me AT 2020 has a lot of base but the other kind of filters out everything and the sound very smooth ...
agree
*Needed this one.. Thank you!!*
I was looking for mics whole day
Could you please tell me...any usb mic which would be good for cover songs
Awesome! The AT2020+ is a really good USB option 💪🏻
@@EdwardSmithMusic thank you❤
Thank you for this I have an at2020 and really am thinking about going for it and getting the Neuman to step up the quality🙏
me too
Bro your videos been helpful! Love your voice!
the AT2020 sound buzzing a lil bit , i've owned one but the neumann way so different 👏 tks for the review Edward
Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Maybe the interface is what holds the mic back… also adding a good pre amp helps
Great job and you really have a great voice. It is certain that there is a difference for me I use the Newman with my guitar and I see a good difference compared to the 2020 audio. Have you already tried the micro SE?
à
What interface did you use for the recordings? The audio quality isn’t that different and I’m wondering if it’s because of the interface you used.
You sound amazing on both of them, so i think that's the proof that you dont need to spend thousands of dollars to sound amazing its all about vocal skills :)
Thanks man!!
Nah the at2020 sounds terrible, there are better mics in that price range

Nice version on the song :) What version of the Like I'm Gonna Lose You did u play? any links? :)
Came for the comparison, stayed for the singing
I know I don't"need" a 1000 DLS mic but sometimes it's useful
Amazing Comparison Bro
Thanks bro!!
I really enjoyed it man! thanks so much!
The TLM blew me away the moment you switched to it. I was ready to buy the at2020 today, but now i have to rethink
What’s the song you were singing?
I purchased my at2020 at Long and McQuade and the professional at the shop recommended me the at2020 over every other mic I was willing to purchase...I had 2000$ ready to spend on a mic and I knew he wasn't out for my money because the at2020 brand new released only cost me 200$ at that time. I asked him "why the cheaper mic?" And he told me flat out it was the best bang for buck mic and quality wise was better than the ones I wanted. I asked him "how you figure?" And he said trust him, it's all about your engineer. Facts!
the better the mic, the better the mix. When you have a higher quality mic, mixing becomes much easier. TLM 103 is amazing.
Good work brother. What bugs me about mics, is getting a better mic does so little. I'll hate what I record and want a better mic, but I know the mic isnt really going to change much. Everything else needs to be improved before a better mic will make a difference.
I totally agree with you!!
Having a properly treated recording space will do you a world of good, regardless of which mic you're using. The bonus is....adding a more expensive mic to a well-treated recording space will lead to exceptional results.
Looking Sharp. And loved the new Intro
Appreciate it!
Nice video Bro keep it up I love ya content💪🔥❤️❤️
Thanks! Will do!
I guess hearing you perform was more interesting than the actual review
Haha thanks I guess!
Hi there and thanks for this video, just a question plz❤
Is it true that if we use an XLR to usb adaptor cable we can't have the maxum quality of our mic on the phone or no?
I would appreciate if you answer me ASAP❤
if your not a pro - or not making any money on the mic- at2020 stands on its own. not as clean as neuman, but very respectable. thanks for that nice singing
Fair enough!
I own the TLM 03 and TLM 02
I am currently waiting on a
Large WA 47 Jr to test out and see if I can get a different sound. I love my Neuman though. I like to collect microphones
You sing perfect! Love it. Thanks for testing!
@Edward Smith does the at2020 fit on the neumann hardmount
At the moment, just getting started, I will just be doing voiceovers. Sounds like the AT2020 would be a great starter. Thanks for the review.
Editing so good can’t even tell what mic is what
That singing part everytime….wow 😮
Ur voice man!!
Love it🥺♥️♥️
Even when listening on a smartphone the Neumann sounds smoother, as if it had a bit of additional saturation/multiband compression on it, giving it a very "stable", expensive, pleasantly compressed sounds. But AT2020 is sounding very nice too
Fifine K690 or maono au 903
Or Maono pm422 which is best for singing,???
Please rank all three microphones. Please answer 🙏
Didn't expect you to sing like that bro
am i the only one who doesn't hear a difference.
I love my at2020 had it for years and still does the job, the other mic is great as well but for $100 you can’t beat that
I ordered one yesterday for my first mic haha. Glad you like yours.
I have a TLM 103 but I used the AT2020 back in the day and it really is a great microphone to get started on.
I have studio monitors and when I've closed my eyes I couldn't tell which microphone is which. Thank you for saving me $900 :)))
The TLM has a smother top end and sounds more compressed when louder noises through it
The thing is, the more expensive mic might not suit your voice better than the cheap one. Always try your mic out before purchase when possible.
Im just curios bro, how you connect microphone to video? Because I know the way to record it in some sound recording program like Cubase or else and add it to video. But how to connect it to video directly while you sing? In case of phone or else. Im not sure with which device you recorded :)
