- Artist Ibrahim El-Salahi discusses his work 'Reborn Sounds of Childhood Dreams 1' 1962-3, a large-scale oil painting recently acquired by Tate.
TateShots recently visited Sudanese artist Ibrahim El-Salahi in his Oxford studio. In 2013 Tate Modern will present the UK's first major exhibition of El-Salahi's work, bringing together 100 pieces from across more than five decades of his international career, this retrospective will highlight one of the most significant figures in African and Arab Modernism, and reveal his place in the context of a broader, global art history.

I agree, I have said many times that imposing a title can affect what people see & understand about a piece of art (obviously), sometimes we might want to influence this with OUR title and other times leave it untitled so people are totally (not ever completely?) free to see what they want to see or are programmed to see from their/our histories, education, experiences, senses, cognitive biases etc.

I have often felt that an artist that begins from the subconscious, has a kind of harmonious relationship with the world. It's difficult to put it into words but these individuals begin thinking from the heart.
Brilliant. Moving. It would be fascinating to watch this man create - from beginning to end - one of his paintings.
