  • William Kentridge’s studio in Johannesburg is a ‘vital physical and psychic space’ where he conceives and develops his ambitious projects and artworks.
William Kentridge is a South African artist best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films which are usually developed from charcoal drawings and sketches.
In this film he talks about how flexible charcoal is and how you can change the composition ‘as quickly as you can change your mind’. He also shows us around his studio where ideas conceived as drawings become animations, performances, and installations.

03:05 “The idea of being an artist is that all the different mediums are open to you in which to explore the world. Which is to say to explore your relationship to the world as an artist.”
    Beautifully said, wow.

Wow... He allows you to dwelve into his mind in each of his pieces. The way he explains his art and his artistic approach is also far more profound than one could see from an ordinary observation of his work. We are indeed blessed to have an artist like him. Thank you, William Kentridge!

...the richest people on the planet are artist, and few are richer than William...I was in Rome when he was removing grime off the canal walls and creating large silhouettes ...I realised the depth of his exploration...massive influence...One of the few intellectually honest contemporary artists.

How the hell does he keep his white shirts so clean working in charcoal?

He wears white because it’s the easiest colour to clean charcoal off. I also wondered so I asked:)

Would be interesting to know more about the kind of work that goes on in what appears to be a shared studio in town, who comes and goes and what they are creating there. A lot of enthusiastic younger people participating, it appears, but no comment from them in this video?

If you like the artistic style of William Kentridge, then you will also like the art of Sun Xun and Raymond Pettibon. 👍

Sun Xun and Raymond Pettibon...they are more like illustrators...William is conceptually stronger and probably more contextualized...He very seldom paints.
