In this video you will learn about backpacking gear changes I wish I had made years ago as a beginner backpacker.
Swapped out the pump sack for a flextail pump
That pump is awesome
I did that as well!
The “for some reason” that Patagonia charges so much is that they pay their people good wages and benefits, responsibly source materials, make sure suppliers pay their people living wages, and give back to the outdoors by doing things like buying 10 million acres of land (along with OR and TNF) and donating it to Chile as a National Park, amongst other things.
Rather than selling the company, which is valued at $3 Billion, the company was given to a trust and annual profits (about $100 million today) will be used to fight climate change and protect undeveloped land around the globe.
Shill
@@paulmccann8494 I’m just pointing out the company’s culture, and how it impacts the price of goods it sells, and the good the company has done with its profits. All verifiable.
Are you hurt because you suddenly learned that you’ve been supporting a liberal agenda?
All in favor of good pay and supporting the outdoors :D
Based on a couple hints, it looks like my camping wishlist is getting some love this year... So yeah, I'll be swapping out my couch with a tent for the first time few decades. I'm already a day hiker, so at least I'll be properly dressed.
You'll have a great time out there :D
I watch a lot of backpacking videos...all of your and from several other backpack UA-camrs...I haven't found a video yet that explains how to utilize downloaded map apps from FarOut or AllTrail with the garmin in reach mini as a way to navigate while backpacking. I've section hiked the AT and gotten lost/turned around a couple of times.
That's a good video idea :D
Don’t forget Jeremiah… “Cotton kills.”
That's right
for firemaking, hatchet, hand power chain saw, or folding saw?
I usually take a folding saw
good tips
Thank you, John :D
PataGooochhh 😆 don't think anyone got it perfect when they bought their gear the first time out! Nice video bud 👍
Lol thank you, Dave
I wear 100% wool socks year round. Great in cold and heat. I have a buddy who works at Garmin and I got the 45% off discount on my orange InReach. Only activate it during the months I'm hiking or doing offshore yacht deliveries.
Couldn't agree more
I went from a mommy synthetic bag to the nemo disco 15 and as a stomach sleeper it has been a game changer and it's the best sleep I've ever gotten in the woods
Thanks, I am a side sleeper and was wondering if this bag was thinner on the back.
Lot's of space in there
Thanks, I just bought the Nemo Disco 15, can't wait to use it. A little heavy but hope it is warm.
Synthetic shirts: I use the Hanes long sleeve and short sleeve off Amazon - cheap and feel great! Pillow? Puffy in a stuff sack - done! Nothing extra to buy or pack.
Great stuff, Dave!
Yes the trecology pillow works but not the best time to replace it
It gets the job done 😊
Stopped by to say… sweet puffy jacket!!
Thank you :D
I went from an Osprey pack that weighed nearly 6 lbs. to a Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 that weighs 2ish lbs.
Love that pack!!
I went from my Deuter Air 6#’s to the Mariposa 60 also. Game changer!
Love your channel brother! 🤙🏽 the coolest, most down to earth guy in the hiking game.
My gear switch was going from a “cheap” Amazon 6 lb tent to a “cheap” nature hike 3 lb tent. I know it’s not ultra light but works for me and gives me a great experience on trail.
Appreciate the love! Good swithc
@@JeremiahStringer thank you sir
Good video, I'm looking for snowshoes so I might be using your Backcountry code. 🙂 Thank you.
Thanks, Doc! Helps out the channel :D I bought some last March for my New Hampshire trip and they were too small :(
@@JeremiahStringer too small for your feet or too small for your weight?
@@Doc_Watson My feet were too long to close the attachments around my shoes to secure them
@@JeremiahStringer I thought that might have been the case. I remember from the Backpacking Podcast shoe discussions that you basically have snowshoes for feet. 😜🤣
@@Doc_Watson Lol you know that's right
When I first started Backpacking in the 70s my cook kit was all stainless steel and weighed almost 3 pounds not including fuel. Now with Titanium it weighs 1 pound 4 ounces including fuel. That extra weight can be made up in food or warm clothes. LOL
Those were the days, buddy! I still have my 3+ pound Gerry goose down mummy from back then, and I’m not quite ready to give it up!
@@daven.7685 I have a Camp7 Camp 7, 0 degree bag. Still a good bag, but nothing compared to what they have now.
Lol oh how far we have come
The beard is my favorite new addition.
Lol we will see how long it stays
switching from a tent to a tarp for 3 season use , wish I had done years ago
That will definitely shed some weight for you
Thank you Sir.. Love your channel ..
Appreciate that!! 😃
I like the flashlight but it is rechargeable. I much prefer batteries so I am not dependent on trying to charge before I go or in the field. I use Lithium only, as all major Alkalines have leaked on me, even in the package well before the expire date. I tried Injinji socks but could not get them on my toes. For those who like Lifestraw, remember it was made for third world countries hense the neck carry cord. Their new model now screws on to bottles like SmartWater and the like.
Great points
Another great video!!👏🙌🏻❤️
Thank you!! :D
The Garmin is on sale right now on Costco.
Good stuff! Love saving money
I made literally almost all of these swaps.
This man is real asf
Appreciate that!
I just recently got back into backpacking a few months ago and your videos have been very helpful, thank you!
Appreciate that! :D
I try the toe sock and it’s so uncomfortable. Like something is irritating and tickling between my toes
Probably not a good fit for you
I love the Injinji sock liners.
They make great products
I went from sleeping bags to quilts a few years ago. That's probably the best and most impactful move I've made with my backpacking gear.
Sheds a lot of weight don't it
Great tips Jeremiah. Well said. Good stuff. Love the injinji! Crow
Appreciate it, Crow
This week without camping or being out in the wilderness, I’ve had to filter and/or boil water (Houston boil water notice) and got blisters on my toes from having to wear dress shoes for the first time since the pandemic started. Glad I had my camping gear at the ready. 😂
PS. New iPhone 14 apparently now has satellite SOS capabilities. I haven’t researched it much yet.
Lol you are totally prepared
Great video and solid swaps.
Swapped filters to a QuickDraw this week for my winter backpacking.
Switched to Injinji and it’s been a game changer, so far. Swapped out the headband on my NU25 with lightweight cordage. I for forget I’m wearing it.
I wondered if the quickdraw was going to be a problem with freezing
@@JeremiahStringer It shouldn’t. I like that the ends close up. I can shove it in my jacket pocket during the day and under my quilt at night without worrying about it leaking.
🤔 too bad
so sad
Bought a Helinox Chair Zero last year. Under rated. I went from a sit pad or a rock to Chair Zero. Let me preface this by : I live in Alaska and when its not snowing its pouring rain out. The ground here is always wet. I just choose now not to sit on it. Works even better in snow. Its lighter than that vending machine bottle of Coke,so weight should not be a factor when you could be way more comfortable and a bit cleaner. Love your channel.
They are great chairs. I got one that's a little taller. Appreciate you enjoying the channel
