  • NOTE: This tutorial is fully compatible with the new Minecraft version 1.7.9 for both the original server apps and new in-game server. When it comes to port forwarding, your Minecraft server's version makes no difference.
    This is a full step-by-step tutorial on how to set up port-forwarding for your Minecraft server so people across the internet can connect.
    This tutorial covers everything you may need with regards to port-forwarding and does not require any specific operating system (i.e. Windows, Mac OS X, Linux) because configuration is done on the router itself.
    If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.

    I know that this comment is off topic but it took me 7 years to find the music played at 1:12. It's called *"She's Got Me Dancing by Tommy Sparks".* Anyways, hope you're doing well, Dan!

      Yeah that's the one! I remember getting the idea to use that song off an iPod Touch ad around that time. Tommy's producer was kind enough to let me use the first few seconds of the song in my intro!

      this site should let you download the server for the latest version of minecraft and the port forwarding process should be pretty much the same.

    This video included something that is left out of many, many articles on port forwarding: The difference between your public and local IP Address. This had me stumped for so long on why none of my friends outside of home could connect to my game.
    Honestly, thanks mate. You're a legend.

    Great tutorial. One note: DDNS may not be necessary. Depending on your provider, if your router (which rhymes with pouter, not booter ;-) ) is always on, the IP will never change. DHCP servers (which is what is handing the IPs out behind the scenes) are often set up with long-ish lease times to avoid IP churn. My router's address hasn't changed since the last major town power outage, several years ago.

      Joshua Luei you guys need to go to cmd and then type ipconfig. once you do this look at your ipv4 address. put that it your server.propertys file under server ip. next if you want your friends to join go to ipchicken and tell them that and you all should be able to join the server. hope I helped.

      If you have trouble with port forwarding, do yourself a favor and get ngrok. It's completely free and safe, and it gives you an IP which might be super long, but if you pay for it, you'll get something better.

    I seriously want to port forward my server, but my parents are afraid it will allow people to hack into their computers and stuff even if I am doing it on my computer. Can I get some assurance about this because it is kind of scary if it makes it easier for people to hack us.

    • @karla4331productions
      @karla4331productions 10 років тому

      DIRT8IKE_FREAK I'd mention that even if you are having your firewall on and haven't port forwarded yet, it wouldn't be hard to hack into your computer. Just forwarding ports is practically opening more doors for hackers. But as long as yor parents are not having anything special in their computer, there should be no need for their computers.

    • @DIRT8IKE
      @DIRT8IKE 10 років тому

      I am not worrying about it to much anymore because minecraft runs off of port 25565 so they would only be able to go through that port so it is pretty safe! Thanks for the help seriously!

    Static IPs are not really necessary. DHCP leases last about 3 days normally, and they renew in half that time. Plus, in a local network, your router will usually remember your computer's MAC address and try to reassign the same IP to it every time.
    Further, some routers automatically adjust the IPs of forwards you've set based on your MAC address.

    Your videos are great and we successfully set up a minecraft servers on our Mac, port forwarded, and used dtdns to get a url for our external IP … All thanks to you, and my daughter was thrilled!!! Everything worked great and friends were able to use our server. I believe this was using the 1.6.4 server that all worked well. Now we have downloaded the 1.7.4 server, but when we "add server" in Minecraft we get a red error that says "Can't Connect to Server." Nothing has changed. We didn't mess with our router and our dtdns account is still active and maps to our external IP. Any idea what happened to cause this? We can still add our friends servers and play successfully, just not our own. We've tried just about everything we can think of and are really stumped.

    For the Static IP, I did all steps until I came across this one: Type in a static IP that will not conflict with anything else on your network. I'm not sure what that means, and I'm kind of worried with the line: That will not conflict anything else on your network. Anyone have suggestions?

    Every time my computer crashes the last number on the port seems to change. I can deal with that, but last time it happened I went to delete the old port forwarding stuff and then I realised I deleted the "Routing -- Static Route" stuff instead. I then deleted the real thing and port forwarded the new port. People can come on my server again, but I can't join any servers except local host...not even the external ip on the server computer works. I don't really know what question I need to type into google for an answer so I figured here would be best.

      Yes you see if you don't have Static Ports (the ones that don't change) enabled they will change automatically every so often, they are Dynamic Ports. But good job that you figured it out yourself!

    For any people whose parents won't let them get rid of their dynamic ip, I had hosted a minecraft server on a dynamic ip for almost a year before I shut it down- and the ip changed only 3 or 4 times. When this happened, all I had to do was send my friends the new ip (which was a bit of a pain)- but no other action was required. (That was back in pre 1.7 though- so it is possible, however unlikely that this has changed)

    Im doing a minecraft Alpha 1.2.6 server, but when my friend joins and I join it calls us both player524. so when he joins and I'm on the server, it kicks me off as we are the same player. I think this is because its in offline mode, but when I put it on online mode, we cant join. when we try to join on online mode it says "failed to connect: ". can you help please?
    [EDIT: I fixed the thing where I got stuck in the nether, but I still cant play with my friend.]

  • @FeatheredGryphon

    I forwarded the ports, give the IP adress to my friend and she can't connect. What's the problem? Is it because I do it through single with /publish command? Cause I can't install server because when I do nothing happens.
    I even set up the server and left ip empty in server.properties and it's not working. Even I can't connect to it.

    • @nawor3565
      @nawor3565 9 років тому

      ***** all /publish does is open your server to LAN, which means only people on YOUR internet can join. If you want a server that your friends can play on at their houses, you must ether try and get the downloadable server from Minecraft.net, or pay for one on a site like mcprohosting.com

    • @FeatheredGryphon
      @FeatheredGryphon 9 років тому

      I can play LAN without publish. Just making server.
      And I said I already set up the server and it's not working.

    I have the port forward setup and it works for me on both my laptops, but my friends cannot connect. I assume it only works for my other laptop because they are connected to the same router? Not sure why my friend can't connect though. I only had a few minutes to set up the port forward so I can't double check it for errors.
