How to Port Forward any Minecraft Server! (1.7.9)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лют 2025
- NOTE: This tutorial is fully compatible with the new Minecraft version 1.7.9 for both the original server apps and new in-game server. When it comes to port forwarding, your Minecraft server's version makes no difference.
This is a full step-by-step tutorial on how to set up port-forwarding for your Minecraft server so people across the internet can connect.
This tutorial covers everything you may need with regards to port-forwarding and does not require any specific operating system (i.e. Windows, Mac OS X, Linux) because configuration is done on the router itself.
If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.

I know that this comment is off topic but it took me 7 years to find the music played at 1:12. It's called *"She's Got Me Dancing by Tommy Sparks".* Anyways, hope you're doing well, Dan!
Yeah that's the one! I remember getting the idea to use that song off an iPod Touch ad around that time. Tommy's producer was kind enough to let me use the first few seconds of the song in my intro!

+RetepTMG || TheMasterGamer yaaaaa
PLEZ
What website changed.. This video was made in 2012 so I guess he should update the video but What Website?
and they charge money to use it now too :(
minecraft.net/en-us/download/server
this site should let you download the server for the latest version of minecraft and the port forwarding process should be pretty much the same.
This video included something that is left out of many, many articles on port forwarding: The difference between your public and local IP Address. This had me stumped for so long on why none of my friends outside of home could connect to my game.
Honestly, thanks mate. You're a legend.
*edit:* fixed grammatical issue
Works for my internal ip but public ip fails
Ugh.. Every time I mess with networking I literally do everything right and it still doesn't work.
same
i used this 2 years ago or so and it still works for me, man minecraft never gets young or old
1.12 had come out plz do a vid on port forwarding MC 1.12
I'm pretty sure it'll be the exact same.
Whats a rooter LMAO, I thought only a router was needed (sorry i am a ass)
If you're talking about how he says it, here in UK the word "route" is pronounced "root", like the word router.
MBU Mebutyou In America, we pronounce "route," as "root," also. But "router," changes to like. "rah-owter." because we're weird here. 'Murica.
is it save?
needle444 You pronounce routa as rawt. dont you?
Lol that's what I'm saying too
Great tutorial. One note: DDNS may not be necessary. Depending on your provider, if your router (which rhymes with pouter, not booter ;-) ) is always on, the IP will never change. DHCP servers (which is what is handing the IPs out behind the scenes) are often set up with long-ish lease times to avoid IP churn. My router's address hasn't changed since the last major town power outage, several years ago.
Everyone you do not need to buy anything to port forward! This is hilarious reading these comments. It is so easy to port forwards its not even funny.
+ProD Miner Ikr
+Slender Stabber for sure lol
for me portforwarding costs money
+Marmori Pelaa :o then you do not understand what you are doing. I have a tutorial on my page you can try but you don't have to pay anything at all man. Lol
+ProD Miner I do not have the same router as you. It works free for you.
On my routers web address it needs a payment to portforward.
On minecraft when i click add server and put in my public ip address it says 'Can't connect to server.' help anyone?
same. I did this tutorial before on my old router and it worked. but we got a new one lately and now im having the same problem as you. SOMEONE PLEASE COMMENT HERE TO HELP US OUT!!
me too help me plz
You can use Hamachi but your friends need to have it too
Joshua Luei you guys need to go to cmd and then type ipconfig. once you do this look at your ipv4 address. put that it your server.propertys file under server ip. next if you want your friends to join go to ipchicken and tell them that and you all should be able to join the server. hope I helped.
If you have trouble with port forwarding, do yourself a favor and get ngrok. It's completely free and safe, and it gives you an IP which might be super long, but if you pay for it, you'll get something better.
Finally a good tutorial! Not to mention being able to pronounce the word Router CORRECTLY!
Rooter... :3
William Wood *Irish
He is Irish not Scottish XD
Jeanene Murphy hes british
I say Rooter, I'm English :P
ItzTom
Me say Router cause' me is Merica
I seriously want to port forward my server, but my parents are afraid it will allow people to hack into their computers and stuff even if I am doing it on my computer. Can I get some assurance about this because it is kind of scary if it makes it easier for people to hack us.
Thanks Whiskey I will make sure that is set and that is all good to go!
DIRT8IKE_FREAK I'd mention that even if you are having your firewall on and haven't port forwarded yet, it wouldn't be hard to hack into your computer. Just forwarding ports is practically opening more doors for hackers. But as long as yor parents are not having anything special in their computer, there should be no need for their computers.
I am not worrying about it to much anymore because minecraft runs off of port 25565 so they would only be able to go through that port so it is pretty safe! Thanks for the help seriously!
Thanks for the assurance guys!
I did it! All is good! If you want to see it ip is pixelmans.darktech.org:25565 You need pixelmon and custom npcs
I pretty sure I did every right, and I've been waiting for an hour for it to do it, and I'm really excited/nervous.
i didnt understand 2:17 ?
i cant go in any of links ...
Hey, I've been having some trouble with getting my server to work for a friend of mine. I just wanted to say thank you, because what you said to do worked perfectly. Thanks a ton!

what is it and please don't say hamachi
evolvehq.com
you son of a bitch
This is so stupid. Why does it have to be so complicated?
Thanks man! My friend couldn't join my hamachi server because she had windows 8, and hamachi isn't compatible with it, but now we can play together.
WHAT THE FUCK WHEN EVR I PUT IN MY IP INTO THE SEARCH BAR,GOOGLE LITERALLY SEARCHES UP THE NUMBER PLEASE HELP!!!!
Don't search it in google search it in your URL bar.
+photon Madara 17 Use your routers IP, not your global or computers one. Usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
+photon Madara 17 goto CMD type ipconfig then use the default gateway to look it up. Then put that in the URL bar

Thank you soo much. I had to re-forward my server every day because i didn't know i was using a dynamic ip :P. Thank you for all the help :D
Please ignore my question below. The problem was that we had not set up a static IP on our Mac, so the IP address entered into our router software was no longer correct. Once I re-watched this video and read your notes, it was all easy to fix. So all is good now, thank you.
Thank you so much ive been trying to port forward for years and now i did thank you!
if its not working try to port forward with a plugin its called auto port forward and if that doesnt work maybe your upnp is turned off or try utorrent when installed go to options choose the second one go to connection and type 25565 or whatever your port is
My routers a beast and did my static ip for me. Winnar!!!
this is proboly th ebest tutorial on portforwarding you earned a sub and a like and a favorite :D
Hello danwantstech,
Your videos have helped me get through alot of things on my minecraft server.
Sadly on this video I'm afraid that the site has since been updated and the layout is completely different if you could make another video for the new layout.
Thank You
Static IPs are not really necessary. DHCP leases last about 3 days normally, and they renew in half that time. Plus, in a local network, your router will usually remember your computer's MAC address and try to reassign the same IP to it every time.
Further, some routers automatically adjust the IPs of forwards you've set based on your MAC address.
Which program do you use to record video? How do you edit? Quicktime? Another one? Thanks
Thank you so much I've been trying to make my server for months but with this video I did it in two days yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Your tutorials are the best I've ever seen
:D
This was SO HELPFUL thank you so much!!
Thank you so much, your video made it so easy... i was looking on the minecraft forums and well that didn't do anything but confuse me, so this made ita whole lot clearer to me

I have a modpack from the ATlauncher that I want to add to my server so me and three friends can play on it. Is there a good way for me to add the modpack through bukkit or spigot? Please help!

Cool Thanks so the other port do not work it changes do i have to disable my firewall?
I have been trying to portforward my server for days.I went to my router did the portforwarding stuff with the ip as my default gateway. Its not working and im confused.
How can i find my Dynamic IP. I know what you said in the video about using static but it's OK.
Are you meaning to find your ip?
go to cmd and type: ipconfig /all
Dude for the static ip when you said "be disconnected for a BRIEF time" how long will it be until it gets connected again?
How do you have Portforwarding AND LAN receiving connections at the same time?
Dan I also have a Zyxel eircom router and I done everything like you did and it still Doesn't work... but If I use the eircom broadband dongle thing... i dont know what to call it... anyway I use that as my router and then my friends can connect! but when I try it over the router the it router it doesn't work.....
Hi I have a question. I had a server in the UK and I portforwarded and it worked. But now im on holiday for a long time in the us and my ip has changed and so has my internet. I tried portforwarding and I thought it worked, but my friends can't seem to connect. I understand if I can't have it running but has this messed up my portforwarding in the UK as well? Please answer.
The portforward site has been updated and now it is very confusing.
hi. i went to portforward.com and it looks different now then it did in your video. i dont know what to do. please help
Maximo Montalbano no i didn't
So I have a Dynamic IP, and I created a Dynamic DNS for Minecraft, but it says "Unknown Host" and now it says "Can't Connect To Server"? Can you please help? And when creating the Dynamic DNS you said I already have to portforward and stuff... So when I portforward on my router website which IP do I type in? My public IP or my Dynamic IP?
Your videos are great and we successfully set up a minecraft servers on our Mac, port forwarded, and used dtdns to get a url for our external IP … All thanks to you, and my daughter was thrilled!!! Everything worked great and friends were able to use our server. I believe this was using the 1.6.4 server that all worked well. Now we have downloaded the 1.7.4 server, but when we "add server" in Minecraft we get a red error that says "Can't Connect to Server." Nothing has changed. We didn't mess with our router and our dtdns account is still active and maps to our external IP. Any idea what happened to cause this? We can still add our friends servers and play successfully, just not our own. We've tried just about everything we can think of and are really stumped.
do you need to make a stitatic ip or can you just make a dynamyc dns
This was super helpful thank you
Thanks alot for the help! However my server won't go online :(... ive tried everything; ports are correct, firewall disabled and so on. Shouldn't there be some command like "-o true" or "online-mode=true" in the RUN batch file? PLEASE HELP ME SOMEBODY
minecraft isnt in the m section did they take it off the list? if they did is there another site i can use?
I have tried many different videos and none of them have helped me enough to get the port forwarding to work. I can connect with local host and my IPv4 address but not my public address please help!
I managed to get the server working for 2 days using the public IP address now it only works with my private IP address but it only works for me not my friends any help?
recheck your IP's your router may change it monthly.
Sir Teetan I set up a static Ip though because when i went into Ip config DHCP was not on
Suba luvs 8 inch only......Sumit got........ Is it easier please let Me know
Where do I get that?
For the Static IP, I did all steps until I came across this one: Type in a static IP that will not conflict with anything else on your network. I'm not sure what that means, and I'm kind of worried with the line: That will not conflict anything else on your network. Anyone have suggestions?
trying to look through comments, can i do this without purchase? if so please let me know. thank you.
Can you show us how to port foward vid because its kind of complicating on how on reading
thank you for telling me every where I looked I got confused hope you come to my server! :D
can you host minecraft without ethernet cable and with just wifi?
You're eyes are magical.
People in my country would die to have a colour like that.
You have to buy the port forward?
thx but can you make a 1.9 tutorial plz
Every time my computer crashes the last number on the port seems to change. I can deal with that, but last time it happened I went to delete the old port forwarding stuff and then I realised I deleted the "Routing -- Static Route" stuff instead. I then deleted the real thing and port forwarded the new port. People can come on my server again, but I can't join any servers except local host...not even the external ip on the server computer works. I don't really know what question I need to type into google for an answer so I figured here would be best.
Yes you see if you don't have Static Ports (the ones that don't change) enabled they will change automatically every so often, they are Dynamic Ports. But good job that you figured it out yourself!
when im trying to connect to my server with my ipv4 address it can connect but if i put my public ip it is not working that means my friends cannot connect to my server... What did i do wrong?
I put everything in the portfoward, but port forwarding doesn't do anything, do I have to activate it or take down my firewall? If so then how do I take down the firewall?
Thank you hope this WORKS!!
For any people whose parents won't let them get rid of their dynamic ip, I had hosted a minecraft server on a dynamic ip for almost a year before I shut it down- and the ip changed only 3 or 4 times. When this happened, all I had to do was send my friends the new ip (which was a bit of a pain)- but no other action was required. (That was back in pre 1.7 though- so it is possible, however unlikely that this has changed)
Im doing a minecraft Alpha 1.2.6 server, but when my friend joins and I join it calls us both player524. so when he joins and I'm on the server, it kicks me off as we are the same player. I think this is because its in offline mode, but when I put it on online mode, we cant join. when we try to join on online mode it says "failed to connect: ". can you help please?
[EDIT: I fixed the thing where I got stuck in the nether, but I still cant play with my friend.]
I forwarded the ports, give the IP adress to my friend and she can't connect. What's the problem? Is it because I do it through single with /publish command? Cause I can't install server because when I do nothing happens.
I even set up the server and left ip empty in server.properties and it's not working. Even I can't connect to it.
***** all /publish does is open your server to LAN, which means only people on YOUR internet can join. If you want a server that your friends can play on at their houses, you must ether try and get the downloadable server from Minecraft.net, or pay for one on a site like mcprohosting.com
I can play LAN without publish. Just making server.
And I said I already set up the server and it's not working.
do you ave to have an static ip if u will use hamachi and will i even have to port forward then?
Dan how do you find out your static ip after you made it?
I have the port forward setup and it works for me on both my laptops, but my friends cannot connect. I assume it only works for my other laptop because they are connected to the same router? Not sure why my friend can't connect though. I only had a few minutes to set up the port forward so I can't double check it for errors.
Google "my ip" and give them what comes up.
They cant join with your ipv4 adress. search for: www.whatismyip.com/
My server works for everyone in the USA but if there out of the country it doesn't work for them is there a way to change that or will I have to deal with it?
Thank you so much for your help.
Which IP i have to put when i connect on the server? The external? Internal? Router IP?
