  • This is a common way to make fipple flute/whistle. Materials I use: pvc pipe and nylon bar. I use flutomat to make calculations for my flutes. This is not that much a tutorial, I just show the making process.

    Install a 45 degree or even a 60 degree 'Elbow Joint' above the Holes Section. The lower tube (that would fit into the 'Elbow Joint') would need to be shortened (due to the extra length of the Elbow Joint) in order to maintain the required pitch. Bass Recorders have an Angled Neck or a Crook Neck for the same reason so reducing the actual length between Mouth and the fingering holes of Low Whistles by 4 or 5 Inches would make the holes easier to reach/play and the Instrument would still be tune-able ('Bent Drinking Straw' principle).

    After seeing your video, this is the only way I make my flutes now. I am using this style mouthpiece to make a Pan Flute. Technically speaking...a Pan Whistle. I like to make the plug too long to allow sound hole adjustment and then cut it to shape. Michael

      That's creative! I've been making only rim-blown flutes for a long time (particularly shakuhachi) but recently huge yearn to make whistles again struck me.

      My Pan "Whistle" has 16 notes starting with a low C. I'll add , at least, three more notes to it. It's quite large. I use coconut oil on it to aid in movement over a twenty inch width. This really allows me to play much faster. It was very time consuming to make, but very much fun to play. I love playing "El Condor Pasa" on it. Michael

    Nice video! Recently trying to make a couple of low whistles myself. The low D ones sound pretty good to my ear but the low C have a very weak C and D. Yours sound amazing!

    • @osflutes5141
      @osflutes5141  4 роки тому

      Thanks! The lowest notes are always the greatest challenge in low and alto whistles. The second lowest is usually the weakest and so it is in my whistles too. Of course if you can position the lowes tone hole a bit further (than normally) from the rest thus allowing it to be bigger you can get it louder. I'm lucky one way here, I got quite long fingers so I can do that.

    • @romandegtiarev
      @romandegtiarev 4 роки тому

      @@osflutes5141 Yes, I'm still trying to achieve balance between the length of my fingers and "good" low notes.
      And may I ask you a question, please?
      I managed to make a pretty good sounding low D whistle but with one annoying thing: the bottom note is shrill when I try to play it louder then "medium" volume. Why can it be? The fipple is pvc so it is not the expansion of the wooden block... Thanks in advance!

    • @osflutes5141
      @osflutes5141  4 роки тому +1

      @@romandegtiarev It is difficult to assess the problem because I can't take a look at the fipple. Sometimes that may happen if the fipple edge is very sharp/thin and the instrument becomes sensitive to octave change. There are also number of other things that may affect the sound: fipple windway size (vertically mostly), fipple hole size and shape and the relation between the level of the fipple edge and the windway (the way airflow is directed to fipple edge).

    Very inspiring and it is my intention to make a whistle in the near future, thank you. One important observation, from what I saw in the video you didn't wear a mask whilst making the flute, particularly when filing, cutting and sanding the plastic. Please think about wearing a good mask for your long term health. Those tiny plastic particles will make your lungs very bad over time. I'm a retired Health Care Professional and believe me, it is not pleasant to see let alone have a lung condition. Best wishes for your future instrument making.

    • @osflutes5141
      @osflutes5141  4 роки тому

      I had to use translator so I'm not sure if I got it exactly right but if you mean the distance from the fipple edge to the end of the flute: that is 61,5cm. The fipple windway can be either short or long, that's up to you (around 3-5cm for example).

    • @osflutes5141
      @osflutes5141  4 роки тому +2

      From the end of the flute (that's the way/order they should be drilled and tuned) 9.5cm, 14.8cm, 17.8, 24cm, 28.5cm, 32.3. However, I'd advice you to use an application to calculate them yourself because your pipe dimensions may not match with these numbers. Here: iotic.com/flutomat/#

  • @fincaalcanara
    @fincaalcanara 4 роки тому

    I went to the site where the dimensions are quoted. 2 questions what are the “cents” column refer to. And this a flute listing..... do the dimensions work as from the fipple ?

    • @osflutes5141
      @osflutes5141  4 роки тому

      Yes they work from the fipple edge to be exact. Basically cents are units that tell tuning finer than just whole notes or semi notes. Semi note is 100 cents, whole note is 200. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cent_(music)

      @osflutes5141  4 роки тому +1

      i give you the calculations but they may not work for you if the pipe you're using has different diameter and wall thickness. That's why it would be better the calculate measurements with flute calculator, you should find more than one out there (google for "flute calculator").
      The measurements from the end of the flute to the center of each hole. As pretty much always the holes are not same size.
      Hole 1: 9.6cm, hole 2: 14.9cm, hole 3: 17.8cm, hole 4: 24.3cm, hole5: 28.8cm, hole 6: 32.5cm
      I hope I got 'em right. I've lost my calculations and I measured one of my flutes.

      @@osflutes5141 Hi! great video. I'm from spain and i'm an enthuhusiast of the whistles, and i want to try to make a BASS A one, but i have some doubts:
      First: i've found that web to configure the size, holes etc...:
      www.music.bracker.uk/Music/Whistle-Calculator.html
      Would you say that the mesures that the calculator generates for the BASS A configuration are accurate, based in your experience?
      Second: i'am strugling to find what type of pipe i have to buy, i mean, literally, are we talking about evacuation pipes or what? and, according to that configurator, the bass A needs a 30mm OD pipe, with 1mm wall...and i can't find that exact combo....i've found some with 32mm or 25 or 40...do you think taht this not relevant at all? can i go with a 25mm or a 32 one? what would you choose? I've been searching in this shop, if this helps )if you can point me what exact pipe would you buy will be so apreciated):

      @@osflutes5141 Hello. I really loved your video and started to study a way to make my own flute, but using the flutomat a doubt came to mind: the figure shown at the top of the page is of a ransversal flute, like a fife, so the metric called "blow hole" is really the tip of the flipple or is it the window? My flutomat says 815,2mm, this is a veeeeeery long flute XD.
