    14-13mm for diameter of dowel for the whistle, and For anyone else wondering the mouthpiece at the top I think must be flush with the top of the whistle and then finish where the wooden dowel ends. So, essentially, it is the same size as the wooden dowel.

    • @lavellrobinson4657
      @lavellrobinson4657 2 роки тому +1

      For an already carved whistle, you can try the same way as it is done in recorders: octave key. Try Hans Bracker's whistle and flute hole calculator. In this case, you will have additional fingering for clean C.

    Hello I am so excited to start making these types of instruments. A whole new world... Very interesting. I am struggling to find 16mm diameter pipes and dowels in the UK. Would it matter very much if it was 15mm, I would need to make the flute longer and the spacing of the holes would be different? And should the dowel match the internal diameter of the pvc pipe or the outer diameter

    • @NicolasBras
      @NicolasBras  2 роки тому +1

      The dowel has to fit into the pipe, so inner diameter, you can adapt this instrument to every length, make some tries!

      @jfan4reva 3 роки тому +3

      You can calculate the hole spacing, but like the length of the whistle, it will take some adjustments (a.k.a. 'voicing'.) This is due to a lot of differing factors. Interior diameter, wall thickness, how rounded or square the edges of the holes are, the diameter of the holes (start too small, then enlarge), the stiffness of the body material and so on. If hogwarts had a class in whistle making, it would be considered a Dark Art. The good news is that with some trial and error, and patience, you can get a decent sounding instrument without having 20 years experience making them.

    • @alvarozaira

I busked with it several years around Christmas time outside one of the upscale downtown stores, playing a limited number of Christmas songs I'd figured out on it. that included a passing fair rendition of Dance Of The Sugarplum Fairies. I can't remember what happened to it, but now I can have a shot at making one of my own.

    Bonjour Nicolas et félicitations pour tes parutions UA-cam ! J'ai une question à te poser : quelle appli utilises-tu dans cette vidéo, pour analyser la fréquence des notes jouées ? Cordialement, Gilles

    Wonderful video! What type of PVC are you using? I've had lots of success with "schedule 40" PVC but am curious about the furniture grade PVC

      Just pick the cheapest. For this purpose, you don't need the extra strength or chemical resistance of the specialty PVC. Schedule 40 is just fine.
      If you're making something super big and long, you might want the added wall thickness of a higher schedule pipe for stiffness, but other than that I don't think there's a strong reason to spend the extra cash.

      Glenn Schultz (RIP), who was well known for his Thin Weasel wooden whistles, also made a line from CPVC (the beige hot-water pipe--schedule 80?), that he called Water Weasels (I used to own one, and losing it, literally, was one of my big instrument regrets).

    Hello, It is great !!! Diameters of holes in the schema are plan or drilled ? Is the distance from the edge to the center of the holes?

    Hi! thanks for your video.
    I have a question: wich is the measure of the file you use for making the bevel?
    Is it more convenient using 10 mm or 7 mm?
    thanks!

      The tuning app is tunable, you can use my affiliate link in the description, that helps!
