    Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
    It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
    We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

    That tongue latch is in place to transmit force through the center of the planter frame rather than pulling everything through the diagonal draft tubes. The center frame on your 24 row does not have any draft force transmitted through it because it is not locked to the front of the planter. With Bauer frames capable of 54 row units and heavier frames compared to NT's, they needed to relieve stress on the draft tubes during planting.

    38:55 "You can never build your barns big enough.": Concept change: Pull your barn over your implement rather than push your implement into your barn. Benefits: (1) Always have exactly the square footage you need for the storage. Each implement has its own barn with footprint equal to implement footprint. (2) Cheaper than a fixed permanent barn and more flexible. (3) Minimal (i.e. zero) surface preparation. (4) Much faster staging. (5) Lighter construction. Make your barn covering out of sail cloth. (6) More flexibility. Make barn components modular and hook them together as needed. Mix and match as you replace equipment. (7) Use protection barns only for storage. Pull into smaller permanent climate controlled maintenance barn when servicing equipment. (8) Expand by increasing footprint size with near zero footprint preparation. (9) Anchor as you would a house trailer.

    Hey there Andy, and crew, I hope this finds you all well and good.
    Congratulations, Sweet planter, I can see why you're all giddy about the upcoming bean planting season!
    With the extra rows, and the ability to plant faster, you should cut your planting time spent in the field by approximately 1/3 if you plant the same acreage, or increase your acreage by 1/3 if you want to spend the same amount of time in the field, the choice is yours.
    Was tracks not an option with your row spacing and number of rows, or you're just not a track fan?

      @@RealJohnWayne yes most dealerships will install about anything that you’d like. Compaction has always been an issue, but it’s really hard to quantify the return on investment. I’m 20” across the whole farm. I wish you were closer, if you did a trial of 20” corn, I could loan you a corn head. I can’t remember if your corn planter is exact emerge or not, they are a game changer though.
    The 20” corn at the same population per acre you would plant 30” lowers your herbicide usage. Or in my case, the rows close off earlier to lower weed pressure for organic no till. 15” is too tight, I yield better with 20”.
    20” is the wave of the future. 20” beans do significantly better than 15” also. You want to take advantage of the space to get more pods as the plant tillers, but not give it too much and it puts too much energy in to spreading out that it runs out of juice when it’s time to fill pods. I am 100% certain of it.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  Рік тому

      I’d really love to try 20” corn, but that requires a few different things. I have the planter now, so I could get some corn plates and run slow. It’s probably not too hard to find a corn head to run. I think 20” corn would be a great fit for a high-management system, which is a bit different than what you do!

    Are the seed tanks on the new planter a higher capacity than the old planter? Since it has more rows I would think that it would. I think you may have to build a larger shed or maybe have a set of doors added to the back of the shed to where you could pull straight through to the other side and then drop the planter. What is the total folded length from the pental eye to the rear of the planter? If there is enough room at the rear of the shed it probably wouldn't take much gravel to make a road base. The biggest cost would be adding the rear door(s). A lot of fire departments here in the Denver, CO area have it so the fire engines drive into the fire house from the rear so the front of the engine is faceing out. That way they don't have to back the engines into the fire houses. I think I sound like the goverment suggesting how to better spend your money, sorry.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  Рік тому +1

      John Deere redesigned some of the parts on this newest model year of planters. They all have bigger tanks, regardless of planter size. As for storage space, the next logical thing for us to build would be a working shop. The only problem is that they are very expensive to build, and I’m not sure how quickly it would really return on the investment. I would say 50-60% of farming operations have decent shops to work out of. It is on our radar for the future, but we haven’t made any real decisions about it.

    I know this is a dumb question so don’t beat me up everyone, but wouldn’t more narrow spacing produce higher yields? I’m thinking more plants per acre.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  Рік тому

      For the most part, soybeans are capable of capturing all of the sunlight in a given row regardless of row spacing and population, so long as both are in a reasonable range. Narrower rows reach canopy quicker, which gives them an advantage on a marginal acre where growth isn't as easy, and they also provide better weed control. Overall, the data is pretty clear that wider rows, like 30", do not seem to yield any less on good ground.

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  Рік тому

      That’s a good one! It’s hard to really give an accurate average. I usually base it all on straight line efficiency. I am confident that it can do 500 acres in a day without too much effort!

  • @StarrMan1961
    @StarrMan1961 Рік тому +2

    Andy! As your equipment line is getting larger does that also mean that your acreage is also increasing?

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  Рік тому +1

      Our acreage has increased some, but nothing significant. We are always playing the long game when investing in new equipment. There will be plenty of opportunities in the next 5-10 years to acquire farmland as some of the older generations retire. It helps to have a fleet of equipment that is primed for growth.

    Nice planter Andy. Do you think you may need to up the hp to 400 plus to get the speed you want out of it? Or stepping back to 20 inch spacing allow you to keep the speed up?

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  Рік тому +2

      The wider rows do reduce the power demand, but I think 370 HP will be plenty to pull it 8-9mph.
