i love how this song isn't about falling in love and losing your virginity to your "soulmate". it's about a girl growing up and losing her virginity and the guy not being "the one" doesn't take away her dignity. she knows that yeah, wasting her time with the guy was a mistake, but it's okay because life is full of mistakes. it's honest.
I met Vanessa in 2005. She was very open that this song was about her virginity, as if it wasn't obvious. She was very down to earth, and we did a couple shots and joked. Looking back, this song takes me back to those years, when I was 24 or so. Just graduated college, still bartending at a restaurant. I think this song is more about youthful nostalgia than it is...sex. It just takes you back. At least it does for me. The girl I loved then. My early adulthood. The excitement of everything and the strength of a thousand lions. And I did well... But looking back makes me want to always look back. It was such a great era. Just as good as college, high school, or childhood. I try now not to ever take it for granted. Maybe my life now is also great. Just gotta get those abs back! Lol.
she's such a great singer and this song is just one of her best songs I also love: Nolita Fairytale Twilight San Francisco Who's to say and Ordinary Day her voice is amazing and so unique you hear it and know it just can be her
I remember going to her concert 5 years ago and she said her brother was embarrassed by this song and people in his school would sing it to him hahaha. My all time fav song that I learned how to play it on the piano
Vanessa Carlton is an amazing, under rated, beautiful artist. When she sings you know that the songs are from her experiences. You can feel the passion and emotion with her voice. Her music transcends age barriers because she sings of experience which we can all relate to; truly one of the great artists of our time.
I met her and songs last year. I am a 63yo lady and steel feel as if it was yesterday my teen because exactly the way she tells reality in her songs. I got also astonished on watching her dancing in this video. Wonderful
Amazing song. Vanessa Carlton is among many other awesome artists(Sara Bareilles,Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michaelson, etc) who deserves SO MUCH MORE attention :)
@Myesha101 no white houses are places ballerinas go to practice ballet before they start ballet school to better their skills. its about her experience there and how it changes u, the bonds u form :)
@violetgirl1996 oh and.... vanessa carlton isn't like the other artists who abuse 'the word'.... she talks about it in a deeper meaning and looks at it in a girl's point of view who saw her first time as a mistake. the entire song is about her losing 'it' but learning from the experience...
@Psycho0891 2 things: 1. i've heard the lyrics already nd i probably already know all the lyrics of all her songs- even her demo ones cos i'm a HUGE fan of hers. plus i've watched many of her interviews so i know it's not her style to write a song that's all about that word. that's only like a tenth of the meaning of this song. the deeper meaning in that part is she realised she had to grow mature 2. i'm not a dude 3. u r a psycho. haha get it wait, that was 3 things but oh well
@danimal97520 I've also read about it somewhere. Not so sure, but if you dig into the lyrics, it's quite straightforward. The White Houses could mean virginity. Artistic song, nonetheless.
Actually the way i see this song, it's about young girls that go to a Ballerina Camp, where Vanessa meets all these girls that she begins to trust with her life. She meets a boy that one of the friends like "the boy in the red shirt" Vanessa says she's probably way more Clever than the other girl. So she wins over the guy, Looses her Virginity, and regrets it. That's why she said she was going "way to fast" And there was a lot of pain growing with the thought of her loosing her virginity.
that but also about her being a ballerina, going to a ballet camp hence the 'jenny being a dancer'., and because she was unsure of herself and stuff she felt she had to give up her virginity, which is a mistake. Things change too quickly and everything gets messed up...something like that.

This is a beautiful & poignant way of putting it.
Honest is good...

its very tough to learn to sing with all your heart and play a complex tune like this.
Cary Gavan I can tell! She's so talented
my first time.. hard to explain.. rush of blood.. and a lil bit of pain.. on a cloudly day.. its my first mistake..
I love this acoustic version of the song better then the real one
This is a cute song soooo
@Psycho0891 2 things:

2. i'm not a dude
3. u r a psycho. haha get it
wait, that was 3 things but oh well
she's pretty
@Psycho0891
Not really, she also talks about losing her friends as she grew older and experienced more, well that's how I view it.
i love how she said its more common then you think
i like this song even i did not know what it mean
This could be a perfect track for Lady Bird.
yep
wooow i love that girl i wish she was my girl
@danimal97520 I've also read about it somewhere. Not so sure, but if you dig into the lyrics, it's quite straightforward. The White Houses could mean virginity. Artistic song, nonetheless.
@lololsdadsa looks like that makes two of us considering you're here as well
@Myesha101 Yes, I love the way she uses it to symbolize. :(
@catdemonninja I agree dude
I'm 101% sure we're musical soulmates.
it's about sex and love and friendship and secrets and adolescence, and yeah, sex is a part of growing up
It's not about sex
What you've just described is similar "Smells like teen spirit"... very very girly at that!
😍

mine is in wooden houses, lol!
This is the song I'm gonna sing 4 my talent show though I'm gonna change alot of the lyrics to reflect painful time emotionally for me... =\
🤞
I wish there was a look alike dancing
that but also about her being a ballerina, going to a ballet camp hence the 'jenny being a dancer'., and because she was unsure of herself and stuff she felt she had to give up her virginity, which is a mistake. Things change too quickly and everything gets messed up...something like that.
