Gouache is going to dry to a flat non glossy look & darker with the colors compared to the shine of the watercolor. Both of your trees are gorgeous and will look different due to the different mediums. Thanks for sharing this wonderful comparison between them.

I love that you share stuff, even when it isn't your favorite, or you aren't sure. This time, the watercolor one is my favorite, even though the definition in the gouache leaves is really nice!

Love your videos, Gouache is one of my favourite mediums, mostly because of the matt finish, and the colours are very rich. My understanding is that the light colours will dry darker and the darks lighter, this is something you have to take into consideration when planning your art piece. I like your trees and think you did a good job😊 Don't give up on the Gouache it is well worth the learning. However, you may like the acrylic gouache better? Maybe you've tried them?

I like both trees, I think all you need is some confidence that you as an artist know what to do with shadows and light, it's a different medium but the same rules apply! You are a great artist and teacher! 💪

I definitely prefer the watercolour result, but the gouache reminds me of acrylic (though I have virtually no experience with either gouache or acrylic). It’s very cool that you can go dark to light though!

"Don't kill all your darks. You've gotta have the dark to show the light." -Bob Ross
I liked both trees. I think if you just carved out your highlights a bit more carefully on the edge of the gouache tree, and maybe hadn't covered all the darks with the Moss Green, it'd sparkle a bit more?

Looks good with either watercolor or gouache, don't kill it I like the trunk on the gouache better than the watercolor one, but everyone makes different decisions, just keep going, you're learning how to use gouache!!!

Awesome Emma love them both as both have such different qualities. I love this comparison videos maybe try the floral comparison as that's your comfort zone florals. Please keep doing more am learning loads and some helpful comments too. I didn't know gouache had different types either! 😊

Love this video! I would like to see more of those comparisons.
I started watercolour and I recently started gouache too because In watercolour I got stuck in my lack of confidence ( couldn’t let go of tutorials, didn’t dare to try on my own) . Somehow I feel less obligated to try to be perfect in gouache. Maybe because it reminds me of my schooltime paints ?

Both trees are great! I think they actually portray the same tree but in different weather conditions - full sunny day and then a rainy afternoon. ⚾️

Both look great but I usually add more water to my gauche. I actually put it out in pans just like watercolor and let it dry. You have more control over how much you're using, color mixing, and how dark it is.

Emma you're a great artist! I've really enjoyed this lesson. I might try gouache someday. The watercolor tree looks very natural. I feel like the gouache tree is nice but doesn't seem to blend no matters hi or many layers you place.

I was always taught to add water to gouache just as you do watercolors. Is that wrong? I always add a bit of water to my gouache paintings…

I watch a lot of Shayda Campbell's gouache videos and she always says that gouache comes out of the tube the consistency of toothpaste, but you should add water til it's pretty runny. I've had a lot of luck working with gouache this way.

I have heard to "paint fat over lean" with gouache which means diluting the base layers a little with water and adding thicker paint for subsequent layers

Emma, I love that you are taking us on your journey of discovery. I've only been doing watercolour for about 6 months, and your comments are just like mine. 😂 I've asked myself, ahhh, am I doing it right? 😂I love your videos.

I like both of the trees, but admit that I do prefer the watercolor version. I love the immediacy of watercolor...if that resonates with anyone else...I don't know. What I would also love to see is a comparison between watercolor and watercolor PENCIL....LOL...you could make it easy on yourself by just using the watercolor portion of THIS video and just filming the watercolor pencil portion, then editing them together....Thank you, Emma!
