This is a shortened tutorial on how I was able to replace the starter on my 2002 Lexus IS300. It was THE toughest job I ever had to do simply because, well, you'll see why...

thanks dude, i couldn't have done this job without you!!! its worth noting that taking the n/s plastic covers off from under the car gives you the access for the mega-tool!! :D
This guy ALWAYS DOES A GOOD JOB ! 🤘🏽
I hope it's as easy to do on my gs300, thanks for the descriptive video though, really helps
I thought I fried my starter, but then I tapped it gently with a hammer and it worked again first try. Just tryna get the word out there, it might just be jammed, depends on a lot of factors. Back story is my battery was kinda low and I had just sprayed some intake cleaner, the PERFECT combo for a struggle start lol. After a few tries and what I thought was too much starter action, it started up, test drove, worked fine, but then it wouldn't start again after. Mini panic, researched online, checked all wires and fuses, tapped with a hammer and bingo. It really shouldn't break unless you abuse TF outta it
Thanks for putting the torque rating, super helpfu!l!
You're welcome & good luck 😁👍
It went really well, thanks! always fun when you get to use 5 extensions and your swivel all at the same time lol
@@Veronichong that's awesome 😎👍
Thank you for making this great video!
doing clutch job on my is300 and this is currently the hardest part of the whole job lol
I know what you mean ! Thanks for the upload!
Hey, so I'm just wondering if you went through the top or the bottom to get the starter out?
everywhere i looked on the internet said it was a super big job and you had to do it from the top, removing the intake manifold.. so this looks alot easier, still very tricky by the looks of it though.
i take it the procedure would be the same, more or less, for an is200?
I wouldn't know. Haven't had the chance to try
edit: after trying, yes. its tricky. very tricky. but yes, an is200 is the exact same procedure as this video for the is300.
Good job
Can someone confirm if they have the ground cable as shown in this video? I don't have it on mine, but I have a similar cable running into the bracket holding a hardline. So I'm wondering how it was from factory.
great video
a tip i saw from another video was to put a jack underneath the transmission brace, remove the 4 bolts and then lower the jack a bit to lower the transmission a bit. you might need to remove the exhaust bracket too.
also, damn i am having trouble removing the starter bolts. using that elbow joint makes it look like the socket is trying to back out/ slip. which worries me.
i have soaked them in crc, now i will wait a while, then go back at it with a blowtorch to try and break them free.
also, its freaking hard working under there, not much space. i think i will wait until i can get a mate to tow my car up some wheel ramps and then i will jack up the back of the car for more space.
my bad knee and bad shoulder are now hurting. getting stuck under there, twisting and turning, plus instead of working on the car in the drive way, its down on the side of the road where i was parked, so now i have to go up and down our steep driveway everytime i need something, lol.
i guess i will be missing work on monday.... i still need to source a new starter motor too. well, ive sourced one, i just cant pick it up until monday, and its pretty far away.
anyway, enough rambling. thanks for uploading this video, very helpful. i was pretty close to just getting the car towed to a workshop and paying someone else to do it, which would be a first for this car.
Good work bro that looked hard to do but you got it done like a boss. I also got the first comment :)
mrtoyo88 Thanks! :)
hello, do you remember how you got the bottom bolt off the starter?
Had a few wobble sockets and extensions to get around the difficult spaces
@@winstonbuzon thanks for the reply really appreciate it
How many extensions did you exactly use? I need to replace the starter on my is300 sportcross too but just a bit hesitant because of the difficulty of removing the top bolt
I honestly don't remember, but I know for a fact it was more than 3
Winston Buzon okay for sure. Thanks for replying back and making this video
great tutorial👍...how long was the actual process?
mskhyramae 6 to 7 hours using just the hand tools I had on hand. If I had more space to get to it, it would've been far less
Winston Buzon wow, not an easy task. good job though! 👍
mskhyramae Thanks :)
Quick question...
When you removed the old and reinserted the new starter, did it fit through the path shown in the camera view or did you have to fit it out the top of the engine compartment?
I followed the camera path because the other path is more difficult
@@winstonbuzon
Thanks for the info. It will save me a few hours and some busted knuckles.
Hello...i replaced the new battery but it doesn't start. I dont know if it a starter or an alternator? Would you help me?
Starter. Alternator keeps battery charged when running
Thank you...but now i just replaced a brand new eom lexus starter but still thr car wont turn on? Do you know why?
@@3guavamidnit is the battery new or fully charged up? Chances are if your old alternator stopped working & the battery kept getting drained, you might want to check the charge on that battery
@@winstonbuzon is a brand new battery ...just dont why it doesn't start.
Hey Winston, I have an '04 IS300 and have the same issue. Same process for an '04 IS?
There all the exact same other than the 01
What size are the starter mount bolts
How did you get to the first bolt I can get to it but can't get it to chatch so I can listen it
A lot of ratchet swivels and extensions
is this starter same as altezza rs200z?
3sge motor
Not sure
its the same as altezza as200 (1gfe), its probably the same for the rs200 even though its a significantly different motor. im guessing yours is easier with more space though being a 4 cylinder.
Hi Thanks for this. I am gearing up to do an installation like this. However I have the SXE10 engine for my lexus and its proving to be difficult to find a new starter for that engine as interenet sources have told me that I need to get a starter that is compatible with my engine. Where can I source such? also Merry Christmas
I have a new battery in my IS and lately it has been clicking fast without turning over then I left it for a bit and it turned over. Sometimes it turns over but slowly is it starter or loose connection somewhere or alternator? All the power windows lights etc work when it clicks but doesn't start thnks
Ari Koenig check to see if you have corrosion on the battery terminals. Then, make sure the connections are not loose. Sometimes knocking on the starter with the butt of a screwdriver (handle part) a few times when it refuses to start also helps. When it starts after that, your starter might be going bad soon. Otherwise, have your battery checked first. It's cheaper to start there.
My is200 suddenly refuses to crank the engine at all, just emits a low buzz sound. Dreading that it’s the starter.
im just experiencing the same thing. i put my phone under the car, flashlight on, recording a video and tried starting the car, now i know for sure its the starter as it emitted rather a LOT of smoke, lol.
Take off the positive.power and ground to the car dont mix
Lol you think this is tough, try doing it on an ls400
Mcguyver
Good job
