I'm a collector of brass and I'm used to having to use Bar Keepers Friend to create pastes, and scrub and scour the tarnish off of the pieces, but I recently came into a set of 8 silver chalices, nearly black in color, and since I've never cleaned silver, I cam to your video. Wow! I mean, talk about in seconds, the tarnish came off. I didn't think something so simple could work even watching it with my own eyes and then doing it myself, but wow, this does wonders. Easiest polish and shine job I ever did!
Do not boil your brass pieces with foil! I know this may sound even weirder, but instead you want to boil onions, and then use the cooled water on a cloth or scrubber to remove the tarnish on brass. Also things like ketchup, vingar...things with acidity, help remove tarnish. I don't like using those, which is why I use Bar Keepers friend, but they all do the job.
This made my silver chain necklaces look the best I've seen them in years. I've spent hundreds of dollars on multiple cleaning kits and different formulas and I can't believe this worked better and faster then anything with 0 scrubbing! And I had everything I needed laying around the kitchen! *THANK YOU!*
Face palm. I forgot to buy the foil paper! I just got the same set from an old lady!! It was so dark. I was using Wright's Silver Cream, but it takes FOREVER, so I'm going to try this method on the remaining pieces.
LOL!!! I just sold my set to a young boy from our town...It was just taking up room...I'm down-sizing so we can travel more and have less to keep us hopping all the time...
You can seriously damage your silver plate hollowware and flatware using this method because its too aggressive and will remove the good silver along with the tarnish, use a good silver polish with anti tarnish in it and a soft wet sponge let the polish do the work, store your silver in silver cloth, Amazon has it for $15.00 a yard, also using silver more often and washing it in non lemon dish soap will keep it shiny no dishwasher! Silver polish has an expiration of two years.
Does the amount of baking soda need to be proportional to the amount of water? Im trying to clean rather large serveware items and it doesnt seem to be working. I keep adding more baking soda but nothing.
Question.... how long does it stay shiny after you clean it? I find that my silver tarnishes really fast . I live in Colorado if that makes any difference.

Question: After the first piece comes out of the water and looks great, you say "I'm just going to polish this up and it will look amazing," or something like that. So -- it's not done when it comes out of the baking soda / aluminum foil / salt mixture? It needs to be polished? Isn't that was this process was supposed to avoid. And I admit I'm totally oblivious to this kind of stuff... if not that, then what do you mean by "polish" and how do I do it?

I picked one up at a antique store and the lady told me it was one tea pot/pitcher and the two little dishes but another tea pot (same) was above it. It did not see the platter like you have tho. It must be missing... thanks

Good video, effective method. So why do some people add vinegar? Vinegar by itself tarnishes silver.

Was she actively boiling the water on the stove while doing this process or did she pre boil water in another pot???

buffing off any extra dark oxidization of the silver is needed. Getting the pc dry quickly is important as well.

Yes, just wash with soap and rinse.
I think you need to maintain contact with the piece and your hand so you can create an electric bridge on the piece.

How did you clean the tray?
You don't need salt. Just baking soda. Plus, you need to open a window to let the fumes out when you do it.
In a smaller area maybe...but I'm in a large well-ventilated area.
I have a Silver lightning I bought years ago and they stress to open the windows and let the fumes out in their directions.
