Thanks so much for this video! I especially appreciated the calmness and repetition. And for me personally...the happy surprise of seeing your Arcata Farmer's Market t-shirt! My home for close to 40 years...
I'm glad to hear it is hard because at time I get quite despondent. I am a total beginner (and impatient) which it is totally the wrong approach. Your video is very calm so I"m going back to my wheel after lunch and try and be calm.
Being impatient in pottery can lead to a frustrating path. I've learned not to rush things or feel rushed. But it took me time (and unforced errors) to learn that. Take the small wins and keep practicing.
Thank you so much for this video! The repetitive shots of the same actions really helped. I’ve been doing an 8 week pottery course and feel like I learnt more in this video then all my lessons so far 😂 and like others said your calm approach is amazing
Thanks for the video. I just found your channel today and I really like how you showed the process several times from a couple different views. Well done!
Thank you. I’m struggling with the clay spreading versus going into a cone. I also feel like I have a lot of grog and I lose half my clay before I get it mostly centered. I don’t think I’ve been using my fingertips, definitely not using a sponge. Looking forward to trying!
I know what you mean about losing clay as you center. I had that problem myself, too. Use plenty of pressure and keep those hands opposed to each other. Try some softer clay, too.
I always struggle getting the bottom of the clay centered. Also, I seem to throw it off when I open the clay. Lately I'm getting a twist when I bring up the wall. Lots of problems! I like your methods and they make a lot of sense for centering.
how do you get the bottom 1/3 centered. I cone up and down all day but that part never gets centered. I can center the top 2/3s with any any issue. Each time i put the bottom 1/3 up, it is still uncentered, so how does it ever get centered?
thanks for this video! I'm struggling with centering on mechanical wheel, maybe you have some tips for this tool? It's not quick and I have to control the speed all the time and so I change body position when turn the wheel with my leg
That's a good question. I've never used a kick wheel before, but I can understand the difficulty. Maybe try bracing your elbow against your hip instead of against your leg like I do. Your hips and the center of your body shouldn't move too much. Find the part of your body that moves the least when changing body position and use that. Or maybe it's just kicking a bunch to get speed then centering for 30 secs, then kick again. Sorry, I don't know how much help I can be because I have zero experience with kick wheels. Using softer clay will also be easier to center.
Yes, I know what you mean. I really have to press the tip of my finger (my strongest middle finger) firmly against the bat and pull it in during coning. Don't use your pinkie. Or you can use the side of your palm. But I don't like that too much because the grog from the clay on the bat will sand down the side of my hand. OR - don't worry about it too much cause it'll get trimmed off later.
I find I lose slippage so fast and the clay catches as it gets too dry too quickly. When I watch other Center on UA-cam they just dip their hand in and have no issues it seems for soooo long. Even the sponge… idk maybe I’m a friction machine

A most helpful centering video with the calm repetition of steps.
Thank you for showing your techniques with several different shapes of clay. The vantage point and light used makes your technique easy to view.

Yes, I had the same struggles, too. Learning these methods helped me to get more consistent and quicker with centering so I wanted to share!
Thank you 😊

@@aworkofstoneware6873 thank you for tips, I tried softer clay and it works better! but it's a real challenge to work on kick wheel
Thanks. I find it hardest to center the clay at the bottom (touching the bat). Any tips on how to correct this?
