1 more tip. When partially centered and you want to stop for minute, ease your hands off slowly and gently. Releasing too quickly can allow the clay to "spring" back and go a bit off center from where it was.
Yes, you are right. Thank you. I did not put it in this video. But I did put it in the 11 problems centering video ( ua-cam.com/video/GKS5GIb2j84/v-deo.html ) 😊
Took my first pottery class tonight and came right home to look up videos. Yours is the first one I saw and it's fantastic. I also love your calm demeanor, which is very relaxing. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video!! I am taking ceramics in high school and my teacher just expects us to know everything. He doesn’t even teach us and he yells at us when it’s not centered. But I have learned so much from you. Thank you!! :)
That's wonderful.😍 Centering is one of the hardest things to master in wheel throwing and yelling does not help (at least for you and I it doesn't) a little help and understanding goes a long way. I'm glad I could help.😊 This video may also help - Centering Clay For Beginners - 11 Problems - 11 Easy To Follow Solutions ua-cam.com/video/GKS5GIb2j84/v-deo.html
My high school teacher was not very hands on either, but he was a calm hippy type. I think I learned some wrong techniques, but was able to make some good things. I am now after 48 years taking classes again. Look at Florin Gadsby videos also. You may have faster results if you actually push in and forward with that left hand as you are centering.
Thank you, Tricia. 😊 Yes Florin Gadsby is great! I'm teaching from a beginner's perspective. Showing what worked for me when I was learning. It would take me longer to center than it did to make the piece. Now I can center in less than a minute. As we grow we all throw in a way that works best for us. There are so many great ways to create with clay. 😊
It's always amazed me how I have absolutely no problem getting good results on a wood lathe or a spinning wheel but have so much problem with a pottery wheel. I will be trying these hints and hopefully will make a breakthrough.
Thank you, Jen. It took forever to center until one of my teachers showed me this way. Glad it helped. Thank you for your show of support. I appreciate it 😊
Thank you Marie. This is very helpful. I've done a short course on beginner's throwing and couldn't manage centreing. Now I've watched your video 4 times and I can! I appreciate too your calm manner and your not saying an unnecessary word.
Thank you, Sema. That is wonderful to hear. Take it one step at a time. The more you do it, the better you will get at it. My biggest struggle was centering, and I thought I would never get it, but my love for throwing on the wheel kept me from giving up. Now centering comes naturally to me. So glad it was helpful! Did you see the problems centering clay one? That one is good for, (what in the world am I doing wrong?) like I did when I started.😍
That is GREAT Sarah !!! I struggled with centering for the longest time until one of my teachers showed me this technique. Thank you for sharing. 😍I love hearing success stories.👍
As if all videos were made for me I find the solution in your videos wherever I encounter a problem 🙂 I started following you with these videos on your website..my potter’swheel has a small foot pedal problem. I will work immediately when I come 🙋♀️🥰
Hello Marie I recently bought a slab roller and it's going very well, but when it comes to shaping on my lathe, I have a lot of difficulty centering the clay. I hope this vidéo will help me to center my clay Thank you very much.
This is the method of centering that worked great for me. I hope it does the same for you. Did struggle the most with centering. Not sure if you saw this video. It's about fixing problems that may occur when centering. Here is the link for you ua-cam.com/video/GKS5GIb2j84/v-deo.html 👍😊
Fantastic video, Marie! Thank you again! I would love to see a video sharing your steps to pull the walls, too. Thank you for your kind, inspiring videos and informative website! :)
I’m curious if you’re right or left-handed because my left hand is not as strong as my right, so to use it as the anchor hand doesn’t work so well for me. Love your wheel and glaze videos!
Thank you so much. Yes, you are right, there is a difference. It may be better for you to use your left hand as an anchor hand. You can even try reversing the direction of your wheel. 😊

Hi, thanks soo much for that tutorial!! I had a question about making a lid for my pot and was wondering that while I make my lid should my pot still be wet or is it ok to finish the lid if the pot is bone dry?
Thank you, Angie. very good question. yes, you should make both at the same time. I have several videos on making a lid. A sugar jar, garlic holder, and cassarol dish that may help ua-cam.com/video/skGYaj5x8F8/v-deo.html It's best to measure the gallery right away so the lid will fit. How does the clay feel When its to wet? Soft is Nice for wedging, but is it Okay for throwing?
