F-82 Twin Mustang in a Nutshell: a Record-Setting Aircraft

- We've had one P-51 Mustang, yes, but what about DOUBLE P-51 Mustang? That's right, the North American F-82 (P-82) Twin Mustang was a thing. It wasn't quite as simple as gluing two P-51s together, but that's what it will be in our hearts. It also happens to hold the record for the longest non-stop flight performed by a propeller-driven fighter.
Study history. It's fun.

Hawaii to New York sitting in that little cockpit. Oof.
That would assuredly be miserable.
I would need to pee 😭
The Germans did the same thing (kinda) when they made the HE-111z
Twin mustang was a brute
I built a model of this aircraft 25 years ago. It’s still in my collection
*_The P-82 "Twin Mustang" used 6 parts from the P-51. Thats it. Other than that it was a completely different Aircraft._*
Ooooooooooh, you're so knowledgeable! Let's all bow down before the knowledgeable person and his withering but justified scorn, because he knows his subject, and you don't.
Fun fact, italians did the same, just whit the there fighters
As personally related to me by WW2 triple ace and post war test pilot, Colonel Bud Anderson, He LOVED his P-51 but he hated the P-82/F-82. The ultra long range F-82 was replaced by the F-86 which had maybe 20% of the range. Must be a reason not covered by your thin coverage.
Sorry if you find the coverage thin: I do these "Nutshell" videos just to give a quick, basic overview of a given topic. I did mention the F-86 replacing the F-82 towards the end of the video. Interesting though that Colonel Anderson didn't take a liking to the F-82.
Part of it is that the F-82 was built to meet requirements that weren't as relevant, anymore. That requirement to handle very long-range missions that would have been necessary if the Allies invaded Japan wasn't as relevant in the postwar landscape. And, where some aspects of those requirements were still relevant, the missions could be flown by aircraft that had better performance.
The F-82 was sent to the Pacific as a stopgap to cover some requirements (like all-weather interception) until the needs in other areas were met and the Pacific theater could start getting the new designs. When North Korea attacked, the F-82s were what was there. So, they fought until enough new aircraft could be sent.
Bet you get asked (told) to leave parties.
At 2:46, there is a F-82 with a pylon-mounted store on the starboard wing. Look at it carefully. This weapon appears to be a IR-guided or possibly TV-guided missile. The missile airframe ,looks like a modified BULLPUP or similar design. Kind of fascinating….
It was a research pod for tests at Wright Patterson after the war.
@@brrrtbacheniraq873 The pod appears to be a derivative of the AIM-26 Super Falcon, but fitted with an electro optical seeker head probably infrared. The date or time frame of the image might be helpful. The years before, during, and after the Vietnam War saw a large number of precision-guided munition or targeting pod projects.
@@davidmurphy8190 Waaaay earlier. It was around 1949. I’ll see if I cn find the answer.
Looks like a ramjet.
If two is good, wouldn't three be better? It would be, what, an F-153?
Haha, why have double plane when you can have triple?
@@RuiBossTheOnly Why not four?
