The FDA is underfunded and understaffed. There are thousands of pharmaceuticals coming every year and they don't have the ability to test them all. Also, politicians allow companies to do their own testing.

Thank you for posting this. I had no idea that Zantac could cause cancer. There were no warnings that I remember on the box. My husband complained of heartburn in early 2018 while we were stationed in Saudi Arabia. He was tested for H Pylori which was negative, and then he was given Zantac. He traveled over the summer and when he came back he went back to the doctor. She said that was too long for heartburn and sent him for tests. He had stomach cancer. He went through all the standard cancer treatments but passed away in 2022. He never drank or smoked, and was a pro golfer. I never knew how he could have gotten cancer. Maybe this is the reason.

Sadly the corporations got Congress to let them call the company itself a person, so that the company has citizenship rights, can donate to Congressmen to get them reelected, and can be sued in cases like this…which allows the actual people behind making decisions free from being sued directly and losing everything.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this only happened in 2019, did it not? By this time ranitidine had been for decades replaced with omeprasole, which in turn was phased out by esomeprasole in the 2000s. Or at least this was the case in my country - which had never been on the forefront of pharma, merely following European trends with some lag. Why would the US still use the outdated substance - or did it still have any advantages over newer ones?

I was on Zantac for years, I developed 3 different cancers all at the same time in 2006, it was after that my Dr took me of Zantac saying there was a better drug that would help, he never said a word about the issues at all. The Dr who removed all of the cancer from me along with my right ovary could not understand how I got 3 different types of cancer all in the same area at the same time. One of them was very rare.
Now I know and I’m peeved that my Dr who I had trusted since I was 16 lied to my face, I have since been placed on yet another type of medication for my reflux and it just does not work as well. I cannot even confront him as he passed away a few years ago.

They will be fine, because they are getting government money to continue operating. I know this because I work for a certain company that is sub-contracted by another company for a construction project to increase and improve the infrastructure at Sanofi here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Sanofi has a brand new building going up for manufacturing vaccines. The Canadian government want them to have greater output of vaccines in case of another pandemic like Covid. So Sanofi received hundreds of millions of canadian dollars to expand their facilities. Federal and Provincial money. The construction had to stop for a day, a couple of months ago because Trudeau, Ford and the Toronto Mayor were paying a visit to see how the project was moving forward.

My doctor tried to get me to take this for my GERD. I refused because I'd heard somewhere that it can cause stomach ulcers or other issues. That was 15 years ago. I would have been on it constantly for years. I did try it once for a week or two, but it and others like it didn't help my GERD. I even had prescription meds which helped some, but weren't a solution. Sodium Bicarbonate... baking soda in pill form... was my fix. I have to take a lot, and I burp like crazy for 10 minutes. But it works so well. After years of taking them constantly every day, my PH level (urine and non-blood fluids) went from about 5 to 6.8, and I rarely get acid indigestion most days. It was kind of a miracle for me. And it wasn't a hard core drug, or even something considered a drug by most people...
EDIT: Sodium bicarb is not, simply said, "just antacids". It's true but misses critical context. Most over the counter antacids are calcium bicarbonate. It is slower and gentler acting so that you don't have sudden and "violent" burping. You still burp, but it's not nearly as much. Also, they add some chalky fillers and extras that dilute how much of the active ingredient is in there. It's plenty for people with normal acid indigestion. It's not nearly enough for people with GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). For an "antacid" to work for a GERD sufferer, it has to be much more of the active ingredient, and should generally be the more reactive sodium or potassium bicarbonate pills, which are 100% active ingredient, and are rarely sold on shelves (you can order online or ask the Pharmacist if they have something like "Rugby Sodium Bicarb", which is kept behind the counter for prescriptions, but does not require a prescription to buy, so they will sell it to you at the pharmacy counter if they have it.)
The reason it's not normally sold directly on shelves like this is because it is overkill and unpleasant to use for a typical "once in a while" acid indigestion sufferer. The first time you use it, it will be deeply unpleasant, IMO. Also, I imagine makers of more complex and expensive pills like Zantac would also love for it to be hidden from shelves since it solves the problem better for cheaper.

Ironically, a lot of heartburn is caused by low stomach acid, not high stomach acid. The PH of stomach acid is not acidic enough to cause the esophageal sphincter to close, allowing acid reflux. For many people, they ideally want to increase stomach acid. Using antacids will over time make the problem worse.
Modern day diets have a lot to answer for. The only thing that gives me heartburn is something high in sugar. So, I no longer consume sugar and my chronic heartburn is gone.

Wow, I somehow missed that zantac was carcinogenic. I'm just so glad I didn't listen to my husband's mother. My youngest child had what was likely reflux as a baby. MIL pestered me to take my baby to the doctor for it and get a prescription so I took her. The doctor asked if I wanted a prescription for Zantac for my baby. I had been reading articles that said reflux may have to do with food allergies and possibly the way a mother eats and breastfeeds. I hired a lactation consultant who confirmed the changes in feeding and I went dairy free. My baby's reflux calmed down so she didn't get the Zantac prescription during her follow up appointment.
My MIL was so prescription -happy and pushy. I'm so glad I trusted my gut and didn't listen to her.

I did all that and it still didn’t work for my son. It was the only thing as a baby that kept him from having major surgery. The cause is a birth defect in the muscle that controls the flap on the top of the stomach, so it doesn’t close all the way. My aunt had this but we didn’t know it was a family birth defect until Matthew was born. He outgrew it by age 2, but then he had to go back on it in the 9th grade, and finally outgrew it again at age 20 and could stop the medication. His only health issue right now is a vitamin D deficiency (Sept 2024).

I had a neighbor who had stomach problems for a long time. I'm guessing she was probably prescribed zantec, because she was under a doctor's care for her severe symptoms for years. Then she started telling me that it was getting worse, but she didn't think the doctor was taking her seriously. She thought he was tired of her complaining about her stomach. I think that's part of the problem in medicine, too. Doctors want to treat and be done, but if the condition isn't cured, they get frustrated and start getting the patient out the door quickly. My neighbor ended up finally being diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2010. She died in 2011. Her husband died a couple years later, and they didn't have children, so there no one to sue. And anyway, $25,000 doesn't pay for the cancer treatments. Even if it all went to the patients or their survivors, without deductions for legal fees, $25,000 is a drop in the bucket for all they had to pay just to deal with the cancer.
As far as settlements go, that's the standard language. A settlement is avoidance of going to court for whatever reason. It's never an acknowledgement of guilt.

Letrozole to make double triple sure it won’t come back, Fosomax to cure the bone thinning caused by the letrozole, heart scans because above drugs cause cardiovascular health risks. Currently as a healthy 66 year old (exercise daily, good diet, normal weight), I just want them to quit fixing what is really not broken.

The FDA is run by industry lawyers and advisers. The current FDA head, Robert Califf has been an adviser to all the giant pharma companies and has been paid 10s of thousands by them. There are conflicts of interest in just about every 'regulatory' organization in the US government. Holding them accountable is about as likely as the Pentagon passing an audit.

  • @hundid5930
    @hundid5930 14 днів тому +6

Hey I usually like you videos, but you really missed the mark here on getting the full story. As it currently stands, there has been 0 wins for anyone associated with this litigation in any jurisdiction. This is despite over 10 individual cases going to trial across the US. The ruling by the Florida judge, which was on 45k+, is called a Daubert ruling - it is a gatekeeping function. For any scientific expect to give testimony to the jury, the judge must find that the overall quality of the scientific opinion meets a (really quite low) bar of quality. This is so quacks in lab coats aren't presenting pet theories to juries.
The Zantac trial failed to pass the Daubert ruling in FL - a shocking situation which sent all the stocks up. If this was really such a cut and dry case, they would have no problem passing this stage - it really is just a checkbox. Than most of these plaintiffs moved to Delaware, where a different judge, with the same evidence and experts, allowed it through the Daubert stage - saying her role was not as a gatekeeper, not on the basis of the evidence being shaky. Okay fine - the Florida judge got it wrong? Well the companies sought an extraordinary interlocutory appeal (just an immediate appeal), to the DE supreme court. This was unusually accepted a few days ago, which is very odd for a Daubert ruling. The trial judge is typically just given discretion here. A similar appeal was denied in FL.
Is it just that the companies have much better, higher paid lawyers, than the ppl suing? I would argue the opposite - the plaintiffs lead lawyer is the same one that did Roundup - likely making $100s of millions for himself in the process of that case. Undeniably he is a great lawyer, and definitely making more than the defendants lawyers. This case is a similar sized opportunity for him.
Finally, if you look at the science, there are real questions about if Zantac actually causes cancer. The increased NDMA due to temperature was not replicated in many other studies, and study that sited it was exposed a consistent amount of heat for extended period of time. No one's car gets over 150 degrees for 24 hours straight. Also NDMA is not even a known carcinogen - its is only a likely / suspected carcinogen. Don't forget the "daily recommended amount" was a finger in the air estimate by the FDA - it has never been properly studied what amount is safe.
Overall, I don't know how this will play out in the end, but the companies have a real claim to be in the right here. Personally, I think that this might be a story of how the US court system is completely broken for these kinds of trials. Even if they don't pay out another dime, wasting years of their time and pressure on their stock price shows how the system is just broken.

I was prescribed Vioxx until it was pulled off the market. I was prescribed Zantac for pregnancy related heartburn. I was prescribed ciprofloxacin when it's black listed for people with my condition.
I will never know if some of my disability is from the meds used. It's scary to think about. Ciprofloxacin is STILL used way too much and on people who can be seriously harmed by it.
I suffer from a painful genetic disorder with lots of different symptoms that need to be controlled by medication in order for me to function in life, so I need Big Pharma to live, but I don't trust them.

I would suggest a more gentle aproach like marshmellow root, dgl licorice and slipery elm would be easier to stomach for patients with stomach issues. Also for ulsers to get better faster chitosan,panthenol(b5) and gentiana can help.

Acid reflux is commonly caused by open stomach valve that allows acid into the esophagus which can give false impression that stomach acid is stronger than it actually is due to the fact that esophagus is not designed to tolerate stomach acid. As weak stomach acid is a common cause of this open valve problem that I'm currently aware, taking an acid reducer in this situation would make acid even weaker, very possibly promoting poor protein breakdown in the stomach and therefore poor amino acid absorption in the body.

Zantac wasn’t really effective for me. At the end of the day my heartburn was caused by an undiagnosed food intolerance (CSID) which needed a completely different treatment. So I didn’t even actually need Zantac and apparently have exposed myself to this risk.

And where is Prilosec (Famotadine) in this mess, I wonder? They were forced to use a black box warning on their company website (and on prescripton and OTC meds, packaging or info pamphlets) stating that patients/consumers should only take Prilosec for 2-4 weeks and discontinue. This was back in 2007 iirc (or 2017? Bad memory). Yet, I have multiple family members who were prescribed famotadine - basically permanently for regular use. My dad suffered from heartburn and esophageal ulceration. He was prescribed prilosec and had taken it for 6-8 months. That is much longer than the 2-4 week black box warning guideline. He passed away 2 yrs ago and doctors found liver cancer just before he passed, but refused to list liver cancer as a cause of death.

Nothing worked better than Zantac for me in 1991. I had lots of anxiety and worries then that caused severe back pain and other secondary symptoms that were hard to diagnose. Seen many doctors in the West, then my cousin a doctor from Srilanka visited me and gave me some of those Zantac samples he had in his briefcase and within days all the symptoms were gone. He said Zantac and the Ibuprofen are less harmful than aspirin.
He was one of those trial doctors in Srilanka at the time working with his prof. who was hired by GSK on testing this new wonder medicine for heart burns. Now I am older and have the typical chronic old age illnesses like BP, cholesterol, and onset diabetics and take the standard medicines prescribed by the doctor who in turn did not invented or did the research on these medicines, only drug pushers for the Pharma.
I have come to a conclusion the modern GP care is a antiquated and structured for exploitation by Pharma. All these medicines that I take doesn't work against what has ageing is intended thorough evolution or your genes.
AI can do better than these useless doctors you waste time to see them for 5 sec diagnosis and treatment.
