  • L.A. Takedown was written and directed by Michael Mann and its ensemble cast includes Scott Plank, Alex McArthur, Michael Rooker, Daniel Baldwin, and Xander Berkeley. Scott Plank starred as Vincent Hanna, a detective on the hunt for professional criminal Patrick McLaren, played by McArthur; the story was based on the real-life investigation of Chicago criminal Neil McCauley. The film is best known as the basis for the 1995 film Heat. The film was moderately well received in retrospective reviews, but remains overshadowed by its remake. - Wikipedia

      one could blame their flat acting sure. (the scene in Heat felt so natural because Deniro and Pacino just preferred to shot without much rehearsal) but at the same time it also doesn't takes away the fact that this was made in a budget of like 5 million or something. they probably shot this in like 2 or 3 takes, so it's not like the actors had much to work with anyway

    I see a lot of comments denigrating Plank and McArthur as if they were the ones that are responsible the movie, somehow everyone misses that Mann also directed LA Takedown, any shortcomings that LA Takedown had can be laid at Mann's door, he chose the actors ( he really liked Plank's acting as he cast him here after a guest spot in Miami Vice, and refused to recast him when Brandon Tartikoff said he'd only green light the series without Plank).

    • @stoogefest16
      @stoogefest16 Рік тому +1

      It also bears mentioning that Plank and McArthur had little under two weeks to shoot the whole 90 minute pilot, so they were ripping through the material at a breathless pace. I understand that Pacino and De Niro are obviously the superior thespians, but even they had far more time to prep for their roles than their counterparts in LA Takedown.
      On that note, it’s hard not to regard Tartikoff as a jerk for wanting to axe Plank from the series, but he likely had enough experience to gauge leading man material in a dramatic series and perhaps didn’t see it in Plank.
      What makes it even harder to fault Tartikoff is that the ultimatum he set for Mann likely spurred him on to refocusing his efforts in feature film, there might’ve been no Last of the Mohicans or Heat if Mann had spent the early ‘90s show running this series.
      Last of all, Tartikoff is the one we can thank for keeping Seinfeld on the air early in its run when its ratings where underwhelming and the network was poised to cancel the series. His influence ensured its survival, so at least his judgement in that regard was sound.

    Same words, different meaning. The subtext here seems to be an intervention. The cop is acting like a social worker, trying to steer this youngster off the bad path. In Heat, the subtext is kind of a dick-measuring contest, each man subtly insisting on his superior professionalism. In Heat, once they've established that they are both serious professionals, they are able to relax and bond. Here, the move to "bonding" feels unearned and rushed.

    One of the most difficult aspects of acting is the subtle ability to show that you're registering what the scene partner is giving. Active listening. Showing your thoughts, that you're thinking, is so hard to do. It's why guys like De Niro and Pacino get paid the big bucks. They make it look easy, to allow what your scene partner says to affect you, to show that you're thinking out loud, your eyes having thoughts. This poor guy playing McCauley is just not interesting to watch. Being bug-eyed with pretty much the same stare the whole scene gets boring. He doesn't even seem to understand that "I tell her I sell swimming pools" is meant to be played for irony.

    This is so bad in comparison, but I'm pretty sure I'd realize how bad this is even if I hadn't already seen Heat. The Hanna actor isn't so awful, but the Macauley actor is one of the worst I've seen. Did this guy even rehearse his lines? Even at his house or sitting down waiting for the lighting to be set up?

    • @JackalRelated
      @JackalRelated Рік тому +4

      Well, they're a little flat but Heat was shot in something like, six months to a year. They shot and pre-produced this entire pilot in 19 days. They probably took about two or three takes of this scene and thought it was decent enough to fly. Not wonderful acting but I don't necessarily blame the actors either.

    The main difference between the two films is that micheal mann obviously was not really able to make it extremely gritty for network television. It was quite a bit more pg rated, because on tv you can't really swear or show violence. That being said the pilot movie is interesting because it led mann down the road to making heat. Michael mann certainly is not a stranger to network TV, he made the show vegas in the 70s which was quite a good show even though it only went 3 seasons.

      The main difference is Mann added about an hour of pointless subplots.

    • @Siloguy
      @Siloguy 2 роки тому

      Plank is good, anyone saying otherwise is comparing him to Pacino who has a completely different interpretation. Also missing is Mann directed both scenes, he had a lot of time to review how it worked with LA Takedown and reinterpret it with two older actors who had the luxury of time. LA Takedown was shot in 19 days, Plank and McArthur probably had a half a day if that to work on this scene.

      @@Siloguy I think that is right. Directors get the lion's share of the credit when a movie is good, so logically, they should get the lion's share of the blame if there is a problem with the movie. I agree that Heat is a great movie, and Mann deserves credit. Even if we assume the acting here is bad - and I continue to think Planck is good - then the fault must lie with Mann.
