- the biggest benefit of having Hydro-Assist is being able to help you move the large tires all the time. Even when you're all twisted up with articulation you can still turn your tires.
the Toyota power steering pump is plenty powerful enough to push the new hydrolic ram. so all you need to do is get a Ram and taped power steering box.
We got this kit from Trail-Gear. We also bought the power steering box already tapped for the additional hydraulic lines.

Love that at 5:18 you're grinding with a respirator, but no eye pro. LOL
Great install this makes me want to get an older Tacoma it 4runnner and just fix things I love doing things like this lol great video!!! It would be awesome to do a video together
Totally that would be great. I was actually just thinking about that. let's figure something out! Contact me jimmy@snailtrail4x4.com
A tip I found for bleeding. I installed hydroboost on my 79 bronco along with a new pump and resivoir and basicly drained my system. After spending over an hour I disconnected my ram and bled the main part of the system first, the steering box and the hydroboost then I reattached the ram and bled it in about 5 minutes.
That's a great suggestion, we did almost the same.
Which tapped hole is for turn left and turn right? I’ve read conflicting answers. Top tap right and side tap left and the other way around. Just want it cleared up. Thanks
Do you happen to have the part number for the bracket you welded on the axle by the vent. I've orderd from 4WP multiple times after telling them what I wanted and they have sent me the wrong kit everytime.
Not sure if I'll get a response cuz this video is so old but it would be awesome if I did. I've got am 87 4runner on some 37s and I've got a hydro assist kit on the way. My steering stops are set up right now so that my tires get about a half inch away from my leaf springs any more steering angle and I'll rub way into them. if I install a hydro assist ram I'm worried I'm going to shear my knuckle studs as soon as I hit thoes steering stops, is there any way to limit the movement of the ram and have that act as my new steering stops. Or am I just fine relying on the stock steering stops?
But how do you purge it and get all the air out of the system
nice video on your "toy" I noticed that the vehicle has LED headlights, what type ae they? Been trying to locate a set for a 1994 4x4 four runner. thanks

Thanks for sharing! 🤙🏻
Thinking about doing this to my 85 however I don’t just wheel mine, it’s also a daily. Would this affect driving on the road like hwys and stuff!?
Not really, I have hydro on bobcat and it was my daily for years. There is an ever so slightly delay, and most people don't even notice it. Also Tyler says it doesn't return to center after turning as quickly. What size tires are you running?
SnailTrail4x4 thanks a lot man! Much appreciated.
After running the hydro assist for a few weeks and taking it on the trail a few times, it's awesome. The Toyota power steering pumps aren't quite as quick to respond as a full pump from PSC, so you don't get that "twitchy" feeling that a lot of Jeeps complain about on the road. Imo it just makes driving feel even more controlled. My tires try to wander on the highway a little bit, but they are no longer getting bump steer, any sort of death wobble, and if it starts wandering, it is very easy to correct without over correcting. Even if you don't wheel a ton, hydro assist is a great driving upgrade too. Cheers!
Is that a custom Pitman Arm? & would you have a link for that clamp on the steering link yall connected the hydro assist to? thanks
It is a custom pitman are, and we got the link from Ruffstuff
Did you have to buy an aftermarket pump or does it work with the factory one
It works with the factory
is it The Rock-Assault Ram Steering assist kit you're running?
Yes
Hmm interesting! So can I run this in place of the existing steering stabilizer?
Yeah! And it works way better
It's not a steering stabilizer.
@@wheels.and.wrenches You're correct, it's not a steering stabilizer, it's a hydraulic ram that only moves when you turn the steering wheel. So in a way its better then a Stabilizer
@@SnailTrail4x4 do you have a link for this ram assist i would like to do that to my old yota also are you running rcv axles or chromolly axles wich one would you recommend thanks
Question, I have stock brakes on my 85 4rnr. I'm running 33×10,5×15 BFG KO2 ATs.
What would you suggest for an up grade in brakes?
Larger master cylinder (FJ80), bigger brake booster (dual diaphragm), rear disk brakes
Do you have a link for rear disc brake conversion? Please thanks just subscribed.
I did this to my 4runner did u put a new pump or upgrade to the trail gear pump
No in this case, but yes those would help
can you drill and tap your own extra holes for the ram kit
Absolutely, I am going to do it eventually
Now I just wish somebody would explain why all the washers and lockwashers and all that where they go in conjunction to the HAIM joints
What clamp did you use to attach the ram to the steering rod
Ruff stuff 1.5" tie rod clamp
Sweet thanks
Ruff stuff 1.5" tie rod clamp
Any heating issues on the fluid? I’ve seen a lot of people running coolers
No, but we have added a larger reservoir.
@@SnailTrail4x4 hi buddy i just finish foimg my hidro assist but still harder to turn do you have to bleed both lines or just one and another hat is the order of the lines to connect?
I did top to left side of the arm and bottom line to right side on the arm pls correct me if im wrong
This kit is suitable for a toyota hilux 1800cc 2y yn56 1985 model 4x2?
Honestly, no clue. This it is made for an IFS power steering setup that's been converted to a solid front axle
How’s the TG kit doing so far? Any leaks?
No problems! Everything has been working fine for us
How big of a welder did you use for welding the bracket??
Lincoln 140
Thanks, just was wondering I have a rock assault housing and I’m currently installing hydro assist,I used a Lincoln 140 for my installing my brackets a few of my friends said it won’t hold but I’m confident in my welds, just needed peace of mind, thank you🤙
@@kennydudoit-enos7622 sounds like your friends won't hold... Maybe get some new ones 😝
You might be right, thanks again, found your Instagram, great videos, getting me motivated to do more to my truck, keep up the good work & stay blessed 🤙💯Aloha from Hawaii
Is this setup street legal? And where did you get the parts do you have links for it.
This kit is street legal here in California. We got it from Trail Gear
@@SnailTrail4x4thanks for the reply!! if it’s legal there it must be in Texas too I’m guessing. Which kit exactly what size hydro?
@@palaciosivan100 the 6" version for the 85 mini truck axle
Is this the 1.5"x6" stroke ram?
its the kit from Trail-Gear
Zip tie them to the drag link? How did that work out for ya?
On my Rig Bobcat I've had it zip tied to the drag link for about 10 years and haven't had any issues. On the 4Runner we noticed that it was rubbing on the frame so we decided to move it to prevent potential issues in the future.
Someone in Maryland or near Maryland that can can help out doing it on my sas
