    Thanks Rachel! I've been searching for the right way to figure out my yarn costs. You're the first person that has really broken it down into understandable detail. 💗

    Awesome job explaining it & I do the same! Also when I buy yarn I take off the label & to weigh the yarn & write the weight on the label, as often it's different to what the label says. I also write what I paid for it & the date on the label. Then I weigh my finished item.... with the ends.... to work out what amount of yarn I used. That really helps in pricing items. It's challenging though to work out total cost, as it also includes everything that I use to package items. Prices are really increasing lately, so I'm thinking I need to do an overhaul on my pricings for the start of next year! Always something to do, but I love it & it pays for my yarn with a bit extra!!!🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

    Thank you for the information. How do you calculate the time for item if you sale the project, including cost of materials?

    • @YarnatPlay
      @YarnatPlay  2 роки тому

      As far as calculating time... You can set a timer and track how much time you spend that way. Otherwise I usually know approximately how much time I spent on a project and just estimate.

    I don't sell but give a lot to various charities and gifts. I also calculate my usage of yarn per month/projects for my inventory staff so I know when to place my orders... and allows me to wait for sale :). My calculation is a bit different because i also add the cost of tax ,shipping ,duties and currency if applicable (also use % by gram..It helps me keep in my annual yarn budget..

      @YarnatPlay  2 роки тому +1

      I always factor those things in too... But I figured I would keep is as simple as possible for the video. 😊

    I machine knit a California King blanket for a wedding gift. It cost $125 in yarn, and about 10 days to knit
    from start to finish. It took 15 skeins of yarn plus an additional purchase of two skeins to complete the
    border (each skein was 198 grams). And that cost was not even high-end yarn. Each panel had a special
    floatless fair isle stitch pattern. Got the yarn on an online sale through JoAnn's, which was shipped to me.
    Someone wanted me to knit one of the blankets, and thought $100 was too much. Like yourself I cannot
    afford yarn cost of $15-$39/skein. Gram cost for high-end yarn would have cost me $250 for yarn to
    make that California King blanket.

      Oh my goodness!! 😲 That is an ambitious project! I am sure it turned out amazing, but you are right. That is a big commitment of time and yarn.

      @@YarnatPlay : If I were to try to sell that blanket at an event, how much money would I list the blanket for; and how many people would be willing to buy it??? Apart from someone commissioning me to make a blanket, I don't think I would have much success selling it at a weekend event. Your thoughts. Thanks.

    I am new to this so very interesting thank you. How much do you add for your time? So say .04 cents and if hat is 95 grams then it cost you $3.80 for yarn how much do you charge total? Do you figure how long it takes to make then add that it? Thank you again

    I'm presently working on Austic Afghan for young lady who is buying it for her 8 years old little sister in Orlando FL. Met Valerie while I was over there to pick up another paint caddy from someone who was selling it on Facebook marketplace. I made her several hair scrungies as well as several waitresses and kitchen helpers. Aunt Joni Buster and myself had a great meal at Chili's on east Colonial Drive there. We had a great day together without our husbands. I have made several different slightly crazy beanies for people in our area's as well for several people who have gotten to know me from me making my hair scrungies as well as giant Granny Squares afghans for family members, friends, perfect strangers as well. Im working on getting my craft room redone. Finding all my balls of unknown yarns placed together in bins i have in my 3 extra bedrooms in our home. Thanks again Mary Ellen Ten Eyck

    That's the method I have planned to use if I start selling my items. Two questions: how do you account for the left over yarn from the skein. My second question is really just a personal concern I have about ends coming unwoven in my sold piece after a while. In other words, one of the main things stopping me from selling my items is fear of the woven in ends working their way out eventually. It's not a problem on the items I keep, but for some reason I worry about it happening to a piece for which I have taken someone's money 😕

    • @YarnatPlay
      @YarnatPlay  2 роки тому +1

      Hm... I would look into different weaving in techniques, but I certainly wouldn't let that hold you back! And as far as left over yarn... I always save it and use in in my next project. I am not bothered by having to tie in a new skein, and I have my favorite yarns that I keep going back to again and again for my projects so it gets used up. 😊

    I usually buy 4 weight yarn, so I calculate how many dollars per 100 yards of yarn when looking at the label. I like to stay around $2 - $2.5 or less per 100 yards. I don’t sell, only gift and donate (so far). I liked your calculations as the are more precise, I’ll keep them in mind although I really need to get a scale. I suppose in the near future we’ll all be paying more for yarn - good reason to stock up now, anyone for a yarn run?!!

    That's why I try to buy yarn when its on sale, clearance....otherwise, I take commisioned pieces and they know upfront the cost of materials.

    I assume you pay yourself for your time, too, and add shipping.
    I have friends and family who want me to make and send them a free blanket. They have no idea what time and costs are involved.
    I wish I crocheted faster, and could afford to give all of them what they want. But that's not realistic.

    • @YarnatPlay
      @YarnatPlay  2 роки тому

      Oh yes, I calculate labor into my prices too... But that is a different formula. 😉

  • @Xx_Lara2323_xX
    @Xx_Lara2323_xX 2 роки тому

    You should always charge full price for yarn, because if you don’t and you have to buy more then you are out money…never charge for the exact yarn amount in a project. Just bad business. Knit and crochet is ART and should never be cheap.

    • @YarnatPlay
      @YarnatPlay  2 роки тому +1

      Fair point, however if I did have to buy more yarn I would charge them according for the price I paid for the materials needed to complete the project. I don't think anyone should charge less than what they feel is a fair price, and yarn work is very valuable!
      However, this is really never an issue for me anymore because I stopped doing commissions. I make what I like with what I like, and then make it available for sale. 🤷 I found with commissions people would get too demanding and not want to pay what it was worth. I found that for my stress levels and mental health I just don't take on commissions anymore. Maybe I will again one day, but between UA-cam, my product line, writing patterns, and selling FO's... It will probably be a long time before I start taking commissions again. 😜
