Do you pre-dig holes for trees to plant in winter, or wait for the ground to be soft enough/not frozen?

I pick a time when the tree is dormant (the leaves have fallen off naturally) and the ground is soft enough to dig a hole.

since it grows what is minimum amount of fungi needed 1 spore?

Fungi produce a LOT of spores and each has to find another that's compatible to start growing mycelium. The inoculants contain huge numbers.

Great tips Aranya, does that mycorrhizal product have Elm Oyster spores in? I currently use a liquid mycorrhizal product (on everything at sowing) but I've stuggled to find one with Elm Oyster in, this is the only fungi I've found known to have a companion relationship with Brassicas (gleaned from a free seminar from fungi Academy) never seen any fruiting in the wild since there's not may Elms about thesedays

I don't think so... the website gave a list of the different species in each year's mix, but it's down at the moment - there's only their facebook page: facebook.com/Chaosfungorum/

Brassicas may generally lack mycorrhizal partners because as coastal plants they may have got their minerals from sea spray, or perhaps the salty conditions just made it harder for fungi to establish there?

@@LearnPermaculture That's been my understanding for ~10yrs from Elaine Ingham, but the guy from Fungi Academy seemed sure, if you think about the 100's of Meters sea levels have changed up n down since fungi evolved maybe Nature found a way! With the advent of cheap LED lights (and the 3D printed PUMA scope modules) I'm trying to (cheaply) adapt my microscope for Epi-Fluoro to find out one way or the other!

@@glassbackdiy3949 Yes, certainly sea levels change and life evolves... I'm keen to find out what you discover.
