    I agree. I did a dental assistant program weekends only for a month and a half and got my Radiation, coronal polishing and infection control certificates but still feel so overwhelmed. I applied to a dental office that said no experience needed and would train the right candidate and I just got hired in a dental office 3 days ago and they just threw me in right away to do x Rays and coronal polishing. The x rays in this office are done completely different than how I learned. I learned with rings and rods but the office just uses biting tabs. I did feel comfortable doing coronal polishing because we had practiced on 3 “patients” before getting our certificates I just need to work on doing it faster.
    Also I had zero experience doing chairside assisting and she threw me in my 2nd day with no warning 😅 but thankfully it was just suctioning with the HVE and saliva ejector. On my third day they already started teaching me how to prep and deliver crowns. I’ve been taking notes like cray.
    I’m slowly getting it throw I just need to memorize the procedure for that and I still have much to learn. Pray for me 😳🙏🏽 20:43

    I am in the middle of my 10 week course through Colorado Dental Assisting School. I came into this course knowing that a lot of the learning would be on my end so I have been studying all the course material and watching channels like this. I just started my externship and got fantastic feedback from the dentist and assistants that I was working with. I knew jumping in and getting my hands "dirty" would be the most effective way for me to learn through this externship. I think if you understand that the course is more to guide you than to teach you, and that you are responsible to learn the information needed to perform the job correctly. I only have to do 40 hours for my externship but the dentist told me to come back whenever I want, and I think I will until I find a permanent job.

    I tried enrolling in a short-term DA course here in Orlando 3 years ago. I quit after the second class because I got upset that I couldn’t learn the techniques for taking impressions. They had us practice taking impressions on each other in the first class. The instructor showed us the technique and then we had to do it and after three tries I couldn’t mix the impression material and put it in the tray correctly. I didn’t get it but they had to move on, no chance to practice more or get help. :(

    I'm coming up on the last day of class in my 10 week program, and I have nothing but GOOD to say about it. My instructor is phenomenal, we are constantly doing hands on every week, constantly taking x-rays and practicing our many many skills each week. I'm proud to vouch for everyone in my class when I say we all feel extremely prepared for our first job as dental assistants. I highly recommend my particular program to anyone. Very affordable too. I personally know girls that went to other dental assisting programs that took years and they testify some of those longer programs are a waist of time and money because they barely got to do any hands on and were only taught book work. So when they went in for a job they were not prepared.

    The course I'm taking is a year and a half at my local college. Honestly, I'm so glad I decided to take it 😭 I'm currently in externship and so far all of my classmates have been complimented on their ability to learn so fast. I'm amazed by the amount of dental assistants telling me they regret their 12 week courses. At some clinics, I see something as basic as sterilization and personal protection equipment was clearly lacked in being taught the importance of why we do it. I'm definitely going to be more selective on which office I work at. I feel like my classmates and I are equipped with the knowledge to not be taken advantage of.

  • @totalpartykill999

    i would say 9 months is really long for just learning to be a DA. also costly. i guess i am biased because i learned to be a DA in the military, and it certainly did not take 9 months to learn the basic skills. it was more like 3 and a half. what you really learn is on the job. i do agree that whatever course you take, then there should at least be a hands-on portion. also it helps to find a DDS that will let you volunteer in their clinic and just observe and practice as you need to, until you get comfortable to be a paid DA.
    another thing-- don't get into ANY medical related field just solely because you think you will get a bunch of money. your motivation should initially be that you love that field and are fascinated with it. if you have that sort of enthusiasm the money will follow.

    Didn't go to any programs, work for 2 years now with doctor who taught me everything. And just recently she hired an assistant after DA 12 week course... omg she can't even put xrays together and make basic filling set up🤣🤣 what are you paying for?? Ridiculous

    There's one program im considering. It's 4 weeks, but i get hands on experiece every day. What are your thoughts on that? The result would be a licensed Dental Assistant in my state. Thank you so much for these videos! ❤

      4 weeks is not enough to obtain skills and knowledge as a dental assistant. But, if that’s all you can do just know what you’re getting yourself into. You must find an office that is willing to train you and that might take time

    What do y’all think about someone who attended a 10 week program and after getting the certification goes to the same office they entershipped to apply for RDA and just let the dentist know the truth about you before they hire you.Letting them know you took most of the school online and not much hands on & it was mainly a intro to dental assisting .. would that look better on you when applying ? I mean your being 100 honest.. (Asking because I was interested in going to a 10 week program, two days of 10hour hands on & 40 hour entership ) it is affordable and the school is 40 minutes from my house..

    • @DentalVibes
      @DentalVibes  3 роки тому +2

      A Dentist will know your lack of experience from 1 working interview day. If you share that or not they will be able to tell. As we said in the video it’s not impossible to find an office that is willing to train you 🙂 also, if your externship office is hiring and they like you while you’re there they might offer you a job. All we are saying is to not let these programs make you think it will be a piece of cake because it won’t

      I’m in an 11 week program, I agree it’s a lot of information, procedures, etc to learn. So far I have 3 teachers, they explain by the book and real life experience. I don’t think we will learn it all like any other profesion but I want to take advantage of my externship and learn as much as posible. My program is 8-5 on Saturdays and I’ve learned alot. I think it depends who teaches you and who is learning too. To me this was a more flexible option because I’m a mom, wife and have a full time job as a nurse Assistant in a trauma unit. Thanks for sharing your videos
