I love end caps on amp's. Makes for a cleaner install. If you "use" them you won't "lose" them.
Agreed!! The look install ends up cleaner….the older rockford power & punch amps always ended up missing one or both of the end caps I use to spend allot of time tracking them down 🤣
For sure👍🏾
Agreed. You shouldn’t engineer a product for dumb people
True they reallymake the amp look way sleeker, but they sometimes make it harder to move wires and unscrew stuff.
Sorry big D, I agree with this guy. End caps are good.
Dude what a killer little amp! Great video and nice hidden gem here.
Yeah man I’m gonna put it in the Accord for a bit and see how it does
Ordered it after the efficiency rating and output at 8ohms. 😂. Exactly what I’m looking for.
Run 16G power wire at that draw 😂
I just checked, I bought two of these in 2017 from Crutchfield. They were marked down to $99 at the time.
Both have been playing at 2 ohms everyday for the last five years (mine and my son's trucks). Both have been dead reliable.
BTW. I was able to cleanly fit Sky High oversize 4 gauge in these.
I have 3 of these amps as well. They have been very reliable for me as well.
Yup. I purchased two from sonic electronics years ago for
JBL has always made top notch car and home audio components. I am running JBL amps, subs and door speakers in two separate vehicles. Plenty of headroom and the sound quality is amazing. Great Video Big D !! Keep on rolling that beautiful bean footage.. Lol.
And don’t forget Concert systems too.
many toyotas /lexus come equipped with jbl HU +Amp + Speakers combo as part of a "premium" trim, i own 2 priuses with jbl package . Sounds ok for priuses/corolla/camry . throw in 10" SW and you all set. Anyways if toyota picked JBL , that means it at least made to last :)
@@Dimm168pin Ford uses JBL as well, or use to for quite some time.
And that's why I own the JBL GTO-1001EZ. 😁
Almost visually identical to this one but, with controls on the top.
These GTX amps have been a hidden gem for a few years. Outstanding bump for your buck.
Their only downfall...no onboard subsonic filter. 😠
Nice review and dyno Dereck!
I have one of the GTO-1001EZ amps as well as a GTO-3EZ.
The reason I got those 2 amps was because I have 3 of these gtx500 amps. All of them have been solid amps for me.
Iv got the GTO-1001EZ also. Its sounds really great and very reliable. Im never selling! lol
Ive had my 1001ez for quite a few years and I love it.
A full 3DB of dynamic headroom. That's impressive, and you don't see it often these days.
Dude you have become my favorite channel. Thanks so much for the reviews on the old school amps..remember when we only had word of mouth and magazines. Pretty cool to see even the budget amps like urban audio wires was close to advertised. Now I have e an amp that has a ces rating of 2000 yet the manufacture next line down below the rating is advertising 4000 watts rms keep in mind it only has a fuse for 250 amps SMH
Thank you for watching and commenting!!
I remember when I found this channel back in 08 I think. I thought I I hit the jackpot! I didn’t think anyone would have this kind of weekly content on UA-cam. It’s been my favorite channel ever since
@@K-Effect thanks man, I really appreciate you watching!
I have the JBL 5501 monoblock that is basically the same (verified by JBL) amp. It's one of the strongest mono's I own and also one of the smallest and inexpensive!
$70 average in great condition all over ebay.
Thank you for this video sir!
Is yours a GTOEZ?
The only complaint I have with this amp is the absent of subsonic filter but other then that it’s a beast of an amp in a small package
@@Liel-zx5zx I use a DSP processor.....it has so many usable functions....like a subsonic. Well worth getting one.
You can get good ones now for under $300
@@justinmurphy2227 gotta DPS dwnload in fone only pay'd 5💵💨 wrks good 👍
Nicely done & very interesting results!! I honestly never expected to see those numbers from this amp both certified & uncertified tests came up way ahead of my expectations….also very efficient!!
JBL hasn't been on my radar since the 90's. It looks like I have been missing out!
I was a Harman rep during the aughts. JBL and Infinity, for that matter, we're KILLING IT. The GTi subs, Kappa Perfect subs, the GTi Crown amps and on and on. They were super competitive from entry level to competition level.
I remember the GTOEZ amps JBL had that looked just like the GTX. They were heavily underated powerful amps and had a clip indicator built in too. Steve Meade tested one. Nice vid Big D!
I have a 1001ez. The 501ez Steve Meade teated made 717 watts certified.
the GTOEZ amps are a level higher than the GTX, having identical chassis and boards, the GTOEZ have the knob adjustments on top plus an input for a bass remote.
Before all the crazy power amps and Brasilian amps started becoming more common and plentiful, all I was using were JBL BP1200.1 and BP600.1 amps.
Have a 600.1. This thing gotta be close to 20yrs old. Got rained on when I left muh jeep outside in the rain. Left it in the garage over a winter now she still works.
@@soggyfries4347 I have a pair of their 12” Gtx subs that I got on Black Friday for $35 each. They are rated 250w rms. I have been using a 1000w rms amp to beat the living hell outta these things. It’ll be three years come November and they ain’t never missed a beat. JBL makes great stuff.
I just love these types of amps - and thanks so much for the out of spec testing - best part imo
It’s cool showing the massively powerful amps, but the average wattage amp for the average guy is compelling IMO
@@wal and awesome to see a modern day & affordable amp actually hit its ratings, plus take a little abuse.
Thank you so much for including the 8 ohm rating. this is really important for me and my group of friends, great video jeff.
I remember years ago Meade tested a similar JBL amp and it's mind blowing how cheap and underrated these amps are even at full retail! 😮
Also, I know you've mentioned how people will screenshot the ratings that you list and post them on their own website or whatever they do, but is there a way that you could maybe put your logo as like a background image, sort of like a watermark behind the ratings? That way people know it was you who did the tests? Or even do the background of your actual logo on a wall in your garage and then impose them over that. Kind of like those stickers you got laying on the Kicker box.
😎👍
Dereck, I just bought one of these "gently used" based entirely on this video. I already own a couple of JBL amps and needed another one like a hole in the head. But, this kind of power for $60 shipped is a deal I couldn't pass on.
People seem to sleep on JBL and Infinity (both Harman brands) because of their legacy of OEM products. Well, there's a reason they have supplied auto components to every major manufacturer. 👍👍
That's just impressive. Absolutely the highest efficiency I've ever seen. That's amazing performance for an amp three times the size.
I have this amp and use it in my new truck, thing absolutely rocks. Had it sitting in my garage and bought a skar sub to pair with the factory HK system. Mind blown and love the auto on/off, no need for a remote wire.
Y'all sleeping on JBL but they've been in more of my cars than anything else. GTO series speakers were so well-rounded, amps always been real solid.
Awesome video or maybe it's just me I love JBL , Linear power, Fosgate, MTX and the old Yamaha car amplifiers but the videos coming love them
Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@wal keep them coming big brother
I love mine. I was using it ti push two SKAR EVL 12s but running 4ohms. After watching your video I rewired to 2. The SKARS bumped their last bump,,, it’s all good tho. Replaced them with two 15” RF Series 1 that I’ve had since 96. They do bump a lil doe
So you don't like borrowing Allen's key, yet you have no problem taking Phillip's head
🤣
Thanks Big D! i used your link and bought one on your recommendation. my installer looked at me funny at first.. This little thing?? Running the new L7 ported 12". i blow people away with how much bass there is, LOL. you keep filmin.... i'll keep watching! Great job!
I just got two at 119. Price went to 129 as I read about it but since in my cart I guess I got the good price. They seem perfect for waketower speakers! Thanks man!
The efficiency is a huge deal too - on a boat
Did anyone notice my too much beer-ism? But anyway, still a great review, my bad but I can use them still for my clients 😂🤔🤪
If JBL didn’t max the budget on custom end caps and used that budget money instead to include a bass knob, that little amp would be very close to perfect
Valid point however I think it is nearly perfect!
the GTX is actually a budget version of the GTO EZ, which is nearly identical but has the controls on top as well as an input for a bass remote knob👌
Have this one and a four channel as well. Purchased years ago new (can’t remember how long) pretty cool to see what it does and to see something you own
I have this amp I bought 4 years ago. Rocking 2 jbl 1210 12in in a sealed 1.5cf box. Best little amp you guys recommended some years ago.
This amp is an example of why I love Harmon Kardon products
Wow. Wasn't expecting that at all. Nice👌
yeah man really cool surprise!
I've never seen a JBL/Infinity amp not do well over it's spec!
@@djwonton12 I never took them as slouches. And I knew they usually from what I remember were of equality build. Mostly lack of experience with them is what surprised me. And I didn't expect that much above rated. JBL ftw
I had the original version of this amp.. and I think someone stole it out of my Jeep since one day it just disappeared.. I loved that Amp.
It definitely puts out. Why any modern amp would have end caps, is the real question.
Some people hate on Harman stuff, but I've noticed JBL and Infinity car amps have been pretty good, maybe even moreso than their speakers, oddly. As for the Chinesium fuses, some people have tested those and tend to be WAY underrated, so much so that I've gone through and thrown mine out.
That amp is super impressive in every way possible
I have had the 3 channel model for 8 years now on a 12 inch Soundqubed sub and it sounds really good.
I'm happy jbl is putting out some quality items now. Seems like even a couple years ago they were selling junk. This ones a dope unit. Another excellent video
I’ve never known them to sell junk, always made decent mid line products with some high end ones thrown in as well
@@wal I may have just gotten a couple bad units but they were cheap
I got one of these things back in their day. Ran a single 10" Kicker in a small off the shelf sealed box and it kicked ass for how small and inexpensive the setup was. Now I know why! Still have the amp stuffed up in the attic and now I know to definitely hang on to it.
I also agree the endcaps are useful for retaining some trunk practicality, as they protect the wiring terminations and help keep anything rolling around from shorting out anything. I don't understand how people are losing them.
Quality. That old cool white GT150 you tested a while back, pushed some Sony explod 10s in a 80s Mazda b2000 nicely 2003 era.
I told Magic Mike not long ago in person, that he is the reason I am a BASSHEAD. Gotta love the FL bass scene.
Dang JBL. Pretty strong numbers for a 500 watt amp. Basically a 750 watt if you have the good 14.7v setup with a little lithium and a HO Alternator.
Seems to be pretty much a 500W amp at 12V and not too hard on stock electrical so would be a simple one amp bass upgrade 👌
I just bought this little amp, also bought a lone Cerwin Vega Vmaxx 12dvc to run at 2ohm 👍👍 should be a decent banger for a daily driver.
Yeah!
This is 1 of the most impressive if not The most impressive small amp dyno that exists.
I've used this amp daily for over 4 years ! Love it
I had a couple of these a few years ago. I ended up selling them before I could run them. Glad to know I made a good purchase.
Had this, as well as the GTX 1k; and the 3 channel one, all were great amps.
Good Dynamic headroom makes for a great amplifier. Rockford amps are similar. You dont want you amp to fall on its face trying to play dynamic passages in your music with quick transients.
I always wonder how one loses the end caps... Seems to happen to RF amps too unfortunately.
You remove them, you connect and adjust, then you mount them again. Done.
Laziness.
I’ve had one of these for about 5 years now, I run it with a Soundqubed hs2.15 and it rocks, was in my suburban for a long time but the suburban died so it all got transferred over to the boat.
I feel like people really underrate JBL stuff. JBL makes very quality home audio gear and have been known to make some of the best speakers ever such as the Project Everest and other very legendary old school designs. Hell, even the newer studio 5 series rivaled speakers costing 2-3 times as much with ease. JBL is a big company with great engineers and a great budget for R&D, don't let the cheaper prices fool you.
JBL make good amps, never heard anything bad about them, had an BP 1200.1 that was amazing. Still a divison of Harmon Kardon so I would expect high quality from them still.
Wow they finally give Allen a break. I bet he's glad he gets to have his keys for a little while.
This amp is a little beast I’ve known this for a little while. This was probably replaced by the club 5501 which I just picked up at a pawn shop had missing screws and stuck power one but I’ve drilled it out and tapped the threads and fixed now. Worth the 40 bucks. It’s got 60 amps fusing.
People laugh at JDL but they make some good speakers and some good amps
It's always "a good day" when Ice Cube makes an appearance..
Would really like to see some of the older JBL amps tested.
Lol it’s a great amp! I did a ton of research before buying and I’m impressed! I’m running a single kenwood shallow 10 in my 91 Isuzu pickup! It bangs I love it
JBL knows how to make great amps, always have! I'm not even the tiniest bit surprised at the dyno results.
Harman doesn't play around with their legacy brands. It's long been a point of pride for JBL that their products are over-engineered for their specification. In fact, I have a JBL (rack mount) amp lurking someplace, model 6230 designed by their then-new subdivision UREI. The manual actually says that the amp ratings represent only 25% of what the components can technically handle, and they did it for reliability and headroom. I can confirm in my own testing that, despite being 30-odd years old, the amp can still pump about double its rating in ideal situations. That's as far as I was willing to push it, wuss that I am. 😅🤷♂👍
I got three of these from Crutchfield a few years ago for $89 on closeout. Using one with two spares on the shelf. Kills it on my 2x10” JL W3’s in my boat.
That 'lil puppy is buff and tuff and ready to drop quad!
One of my favorite amps of all time! I picked up 4 @ $75. I Seriously wish you could test a jbl gto 1000ez.. I wanna see if that 1470w @2ohm max power is really rms
Where did you get it for $75 ?
I own the 1001ez. Love it!
@@b0wwdwn1 couple years ago on ebay
@@msh6865 i swear the 10001ez does 2k + @ 1ohm
I have the jbl gto14001 and it dynoed on my friends amm-1 at 1980 watts rms@ 2 ohms, and just got a gto1001ez recently for about $160 used on ebay but with these videos showing how underrated these amps are the prices are going up.
These Harmon amps have awesome protection circuits. We’ve only had 1 amp returned from fault but it was a customer caused issue. From stage to stadium the jbl amps kick ass for the money
Steve Meade got the similar results with his test. Ran these beast for a few years then upgraded to the fancier MS versions of these amps.
..For the budget bass head, this amp is a bargain. And I like the end caps...this amp is disposable, when it fails, it will be thrown away. I don't care that it is not 1 ohm stable, you will get far more than you need driving a 2 ohm load, as you demonstrated on the "quad box"...it is likely that there is a twin to this amp with an "Infinity" badge slapped on it." Harmon Int", makes a solid product. I would guess that this is a tried and true design that HK mass produces in China, and slaps several labels on them for the Crutchfield,Amazon, BestBuy customer...it is decent, it is a bargain, but it is for the youth on a budget and not the serious enthusiast...but maybe the future enthusiast...love your channel Big D
WOW, very nice, my favorite amp from way back in the day were my JBL 180 watt and JBL 300 watt, cant remember the model
STUNNING PERFORMANCE!!!!
I was waiting on the amp guts big D 😁 Great video tho 💪💪💪
Definitely a gem right there. Also you could always hit up the Internet or a hardware store and replace those set screws.
I lost respect for JBL equipment because their subwoofer line was unimpressive, but this video makes me question my dismissal of their amps. The end caps are a big turn-off though, at least Rockford amps don't have giant mounting feet protruding from the sides of the amp as this one does. The high/low-level input on the RCA jacks is a nice touch. I assume one could just splice speaker wire into a cheap set of male RCA cables should one misplace the little dongles that come with the amp. Overall I'm impressed with the performance of this amp, especially given its price point. Well done as always Big D.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I remember another tested this amp and Uncle Steve tested the model before the Gtx. JBL amps does rated and more. They are not a Mickey Mouse company
😂. Pioneer and JBL were not the top 4 level but great quality for the price for many years. The GTO 501 was my top suggested amp for anyone running a D4 sub 1000 rms or less. Perfect with a Kicker L7 back in 2014
AMP ABUSE! LOL! I have a jbl 1200 x 1 back in 2007 ish.and was endless clean power with not much heat! Aways made great amps!
Harman products, beit mobile, marine, pro or home are nothing but solid. You always get what’s advertised and then some for a great price.
I’m a “Numbers Guy”, and you’re Always my Go To for thorough, concise Information ! 🏆
There’s an MIT-educated expert in the Solar realm, Will Prowse, and on his channel, when he (recommends) a product, scarcity and price increases immediately follow due to demand surge. I’m certain that the Same applies to your Reviews.
Yep. Apparently they are still available. And wattage? 14.4x50=720. More watts than the rated fuses. Extremely impressive.
I personally like end caps for the protection. Have a socket or screwdriver rolling around accidentally and you don’t have to worry about it. I have never liked open connections for that reason. Just too easy to have a short circuit
So it has end caps and runs okay at 1.33? I'd go full late 90s and run a trio of single 4ohm 10s!
The JBL club 600 is on Amazon for 140$ I didn't see any covers on it and it has a spot for a bass knob. 👍💯🎶🥂Not bad at all
Haha this amp on Amazon Canada is $275USD! Would be really nice if we could get some of these good deals up here. Especially since it ships from the same warehouses in the US.
A 30 amp fuse will blow at around 60-80 amps. Double that amound with 2 of them and you could have possibly went all the way up to 160 amp draw if the amplifier wouldn't have went into protection mode.
Love the test (and every other test) Big D!!! Keep em coming broski!!! 😀💯
I bought one of these refurbed from manufacture years ago just to have because they were raved about and only $99 and totally forgot I had it till II saw your video!
I had an old jbl250 2 channel amp and for fun i bridged it on my nemesis colossal D1 which was wired down to 0.5 so the amp was seeing 1/4ohm per channel and upped the 225 amp fuses to 40 amp fuses and let her have it and damn it worked and got it moving pretty good it was hilarious that little amp was bulletproof
i just bought a used one in good condition on ebay for $80...WIN!
Would love to see to see a md 3k or 5 k video, keep up the great work
Not to mention the sq is great. I tell people time and time again I would use one of these amps before I spent my money on a Walmart special.
Jbl always been good...James b lansing ftw. A lot of dell/samsung computer speakers mid 2000's were harmon kardon which is now basically jbl. Altec lansing were good too. Jbl speakers/subs usually have a nice warm sound with good bass...for clarity i always went pioneer.
I'm starting to really like JBL again after ur vid. Now let's see if I can find one cause that's a hell of an amp for a hell of a deal. I'll just keep it on standby
The GTX version has better subsonic filtering than the A600 (I've sold both versions) and it's highly impressive for it's size and rating.
Nice find and even better review. Clearly has the "beef"
@7:48 you "Ha Got me" I ACTUALLY laughed hard. Thanks
👌😊👍
nice little amp. it even did its "max power" numbers which may be a first
Back in 2017-2018ish I was able to get two of these for $79 each for my friends son.
I bought a couple pair of those adapters. They are a great idea. I wish I knew about them way back, if they were around
I guess the box was right. Lol
Got some power!
Chinesium! Best metal ever! it goes up and beyond of what it should be it's break point!
I remember budget gem mentioning that this was his favorite amps.
crazy dynamic headroom, reminds of the dpd Proton amps back in the 90's
I got a better deal direct from JBL/Harman a few years back for a newer design. 99$ direct for the CLUB5501. Solid mono block with anticlip circuitry
👌😬👍
This amp would be great for a basic system. I would use it on 2 American Bass DX 15s. If you don't know, find them. You won't be disappointed🙃 They are the best entry level single cool subs and they're CHEAP!!!!
