- MotorWeek road test review of the 2012 Hyundai Azera. Hyundai is clearly not satisfied with being a major player in just the small and mid-size car and crossover ranks. They've also had success luxury segments with cars like Genesis and Equus. But, one area where success has eluded them is in the large family sedan. They've tried with the XG300 in 2001 and Azera starting in 2006. Still, sales were disappointing. But, Hyundai never says never, and for 2012 the Azera is all-new. So let's see if this time their efforts pay off big.
This car came in at a time when sedans have reached their sales apex and SUV's/Crossovers were beginning their sales ascendency. The Azera is a beautiful design.
I have an azera and I love it. Took it on a road trip and was amazed with the performance. 32 mpg fully loaded at 65 to 70 mph. Plenty of power on highway. As far as this video goes, they left the traction control on which explains the 0-60 time. I am a big dude and I ride in total comfort. Opinions are hard to form off of a video. Good fuel economy good horsepower and comfort what more could you ask for
I bought a 2016 Azera Limited about one month ago with 7500+ miles. I absolutely love it.
Best car I've ever purchased. I can't believe how smooth the ride is and how it handles.
Got one with now 75.000 KM from 2013. Love it.
Beautiful car! I hate that people don't even give Hyundai a chance. I would defiantly buy an Azera over an Avalon. Plus the ten year hundred thousand mile warranty would give me peace of mind.
LoL over a toyota 🤣
LOL it just depends how much cheaper is than the same year Avalon now?
I’m literally in the process of choosing between an Avalon and an Azera 😅
@@BC-jb7mz AVALON
@@BC-jb7mz I hope you bought an Azera. By the way, the 0-60 is 6.0 to 6.1 seconds and it will do 98 to 100 in the quarter. The top speed is 153 - 158. Outstanding cars!
Absolutely excellent car. If you want a Fluidic Sculpture 1.0 Sonata but don't want the GDI Theta II engine failures, here's your car. These things go on *forever*
The new Azera is a Sonalon (Cross Hybridization of a Sonata and Avalon)
This Hyundai sedan represent the era when their cars have flowy, sleek gorgeous & original bodies! I love this azera!
0-60 in 7.4 sec is good enough.
For its target customers (40 and above), its power is more than adequate.
It's a good looking car with good value and high comfort level.
What's not to like?
The problem for the Azera is that it gets lost in the shuffle in the large car class. In fact, it looks like a grown-up Sonata (prev. generation). Unfortunately, Hyundai does not sell many Azeras. Heck, I've seen more Genesises than Azeras.
At the time, Hyundai thought it was the car that directly went after Toyota Avalon and Ford Taurus. Now, with the new Chevy Impala (best in class for full-sized sedans), its corporate cousin Kia Cadenza, Dodge Charger, and new Nissan Maxima, Hyundai may have to back to the drawing board again. There was a facelift a model year ago or two, but it wasn't that substantial.
I usually like redesigns of cars better than what came before. But I like the looks of my 2007 Azera better than the 2012 redesign. And by the way, I haven't looked to see if the 2012 is significantly heavier than my 2007, but mine with 263 hp has plenty of grunt. You can combine both worlds, in a way. The last model year of the previous design the 2011, comes with the newer 293 hp engine. May look for one of those the next time I buy, Great cars, so glad I discovered them.
I once had an 06 azera. I'd like to find this one at an auto auction.
Test drove the standard Azera and I loved it. An excellent car for the money. If they made a stand alone option for a standard sunroof instead of having to add on a $4,000 package to get one, they would sell everyone on the lots within a week of delivery. A base Azera with a standard sunroof for $33,000 is all anyone needs.
No they wouldn’t and they didn’t, because Hyundai never really advertised it. They’re focus was (and still) is the sonata, and at the time, the genesis. This was the middle child, that got shoved in the broom closet. Advertising is EVERYTHING these days. They just simply swept the Azera to the side which is sad because it’s probably the best bang for buck in Hyundai’s line up, not to mention their Flagship sedan.( I don’t really count the Genesis, nor the Equus, as they became a part of a separate brand anyway, and more than likely Hyundai’s intention from the start.)
Actually, the 0-60 time is 6.0 - 6.1 seconds and it will do 98 - 100 in the quarter. The top speed is 153 - 158. Super comfortable. Handles good but not outstanding. At 70 - 75 my 2012 gets 31 - 32 mpg on open highway. Outstanding cars!
The genesis just seems better, but for the base model genesis, the azera looks better.
Sweet looking car
I have the 2012 with 92k miles. A really nice car.
I don't understand this mathematic. How a V6 engine with 4 valves per cylinder has 32 valves?
I was surprised too... Maybe there is a mistake on delivering the specifications of the engine...
Wait a minute, a 32-valve V6? Did Motorweek mean a 24 valve V6 or possibly a 30 valve V6?
I think a 24V V6, 5 valve engines are rare these days.
this car is much better than avalon..
Yea i was hoping it would be RWD. It would stand out more for the comps, but "it is the signs of the times." I think ppl will look at the 24 mpg and regular gas as more important.though. Chrysler is the only full size family car today that is rwd i think,
Has a side profile of a Impala...but I think I would like this car better, I find the Impala a bit to harsh in the visibility factor....and yet I am 6' and 2 and a half inches tall
So Hyundai cancelled the 3.8 in the Azera and upgraded the 3.3 for more power ?
That was a bad move Hyundai ! Should have stuck with the 3.8 for all trim levels and cancelled the 3.3. Atleast then the 3.8 motors can be shared with the Genesis coupe and sedan. If you want to cost cut then do it on the lower engine, cause it seems like the 3.3 is hardly used anymore.
Well you being Korean and seeing your comments insulting any Japanese car makes you right? I'm Japanese but I don't automatically hate things or people because they are Korean.
This car looks great except the front end. The grill needs to be larger to create more difference from the Sonata.

The engine should have 24-valve instead of 32-valve since it's a V6 engine...
Btw nice video
That was a mistake. There's only 24 valves.
This is a cool car. Don't like the "base" model rims though they are too small for my taste. I wish you could get those upgraded rims without choosing the technology package.
Funny how the Azera is no longer available in Canada.
nice video....although it look more like previous generation Lexus ES.
I own the 2011 i45 sports elite.what an amazing car 🚗
there is no v8 Azera. Also, it burns off the tires everytime you take off. Why not make rear wheel drive cars and make everyone learn to drive again?
hertzer2000 hello Genesis?
Looks luxurious in silver.
@bigphat200 yea ur right that's why I like Chryslers & Cadillacs better because they offer RWD standard or an AWD setup that Hyundai can't touch
funny how the rear of this car is very much similar to the Kia Optima.
Beautiful front
I don't understand why there's a need for a class between a sonata type and a genesis type.
hey guess what? there wasn't a class there. Hence why this car was such a flop. A beautiful flop but alas, a flop.
7.4 seconds to 60! That's not right!
I just picked one up for 20k...only had 14k miles
Congratulations
re:V6 eng./293 hp: "...Yet, it still feels underpowered."
??
Donkey critique.
Cooled gloved box? What the heck?
Do your gloves melt now days?
ur right
😍😍😍😍😍
i am waiting for the new 2013 Toyota Avalon
Beautiful from front to back but they don't sell this car in Canada. Bad choice. Now I won't buy Any hyundai because of that decsion!
Makes perfect sense!
Dont like the tailights.
would rather have a Taurus
Wrong!
FWD doesn't compete w/RWD
could be worse - that about sums it up
@nappiral LOL yea it could be worse its like Toyota Camry an Honda accord love child
Only if you go with the V8 version.
AZERA
the front in boring, the back is kia. i like the genisis better and i hardly like that car...
first
There's always reason to cheap.
