Having done a little research, the start stop system is helping to cause this.... SWITCH IT OFF I have also found out there has been a recall by mercedes for timing chains in Australia.
Hi and thank you for your videos. I wish I can find a competent mechanic like you where I live in Austria!! I have a 2017 S213 with OM654. The car has 87000km. When started after one week of parking I hear a noise for the first 2-5 seconds that sounds like it’s the timing chain, the dealership could not replicate it and told me it’s unlikely to be the chain with this model and mileage. I was told by an official Sizebale dealership that they have never encountered timing chain issues with this engine. The car has a perfect Maintrance history and I have been changing the engine oil every 7500 Km for the last 25000km to avoid these issues in the future. I have been using 0w30 and 5w30 with MB229.52. Do you think at this mileage there could be an issue with the chain already ? What is the best engine oil viscosity to use with these engine in a climate of 0-30 degrees Celsius, would a 0w40 be more protective of the engine and chain? Sorry for the long text
Hi there, I don’t think you have anything to worry about if it only makes this noise after 1 week of parking it up as all the oil will be down in the sump and the chain and tensioner and guides will be pretty dry after 1 week of not starting it up. I would say try to start it up daily and if it gives the same noise daily then you probably have an issue within the timing chain section.
Hello, my E class W213 with 195000 km has the same issue. When I start the engine in the morning, I hear a noise in the engine for not more than 2 seconds, and after that everything is ok. If I switch off and restart the engine again don't hear any noise. It occurs only in the first start in the morning. I don't know if it is a timer chain issue but I suspect the chain tensioner. I bring it already to delear and according to them no issue with timing chain... To be monitored...I'll keep you updated if something will happen.
@@tttttttttju12 hi, I can tell you that so far I have driven around 10000km with 0w40 (Mobil 1 x3) the only one I found with MB229.52 and so far I am convinced that noise has been significantly reduced at start, surprisingly also my mpg has improved. Seems to me thAt this oil is very well suited to the engine. Worth a try. Curious if you someone else would have the same effect as with my car with this oil.

Got problem with my e220d 2016 engine cut off while driving called recovery the guy said might b timing but had no bad noises had nox sensor light on few days ago .can u help .
I'm beginning to wonder if this 654 engine is not that great, i have an E250 with 350000 miles on running sweet and looking at problems with this engine i'm not sure it would reach that without 1000's spending on it. And i suspect these issues are caused by the backpressure reading around. EGR valves, DPF etc??
I too have an E250 with 350000 miles on and running sweet, but it was a chauffer car and he said he did oil changes every 6000 miles. And I just did an oil change after 10000 and could immediately hear the difference in the engine. Not exactly sure what merc recommended but I don't trust these 15000 service intervals. Always done it before the dash light came on.
The engine is different from 2016 on e class from 2.1 to 2.0 and the gearbox from 7 to 9 mine have 7 in a few months resetting the gearbox changing the oil every 70000 its sweet.
change the oil every 6-7000 miles and forget what a dealer says like 18-20000 miles and never gonna be a problem.Had a chain problem with f10 520d around 110000 currently driving w212 facelift 2.1 651 at 162000 sounds exactly like this engine after the rehab with the new parts:)) but i am changing oil every 6-7000 miles

You were pretty brave to still start it with that sound from the chain
I been there once .. the guy check my car and been told my car is all fine .. love the way they work .. especially with rockers arms
What a great video. Your clearly know exactly what you are doing and i personally would have great faith in you working on my car 👍
Thank you for your kind review
A six year old MB sounds exactly like my 20 years old Brigg & Stratton lawn mower. Great job German engineers.
If you had watched the whole video, you would know that a previous mechanic did some bad mistakes on this engine which caused the problem

2016 onward.
So the 654 and 651 both have timing chain issues?
yes both timing chain.

Are these engines chain realiable in general?
The chain is reliable but the vacuum pump on the oil pump breaks a lot more often
