I couldn't agree more, I find a lot of modern "shooters" stick to the same dark and gritty color palette and as a result all look the same. Splatoon is a nice change of pace that greatly distinguishes itself from the norm

I adore Splatoon’s art style and character design a lot and I got to learn a lot more behind the character designs in this video. The cartoony art style of the Inklings and Octolings have become very iconic and it’s one of the many reasons I love Splatoon and the world that surrounds it. (P.S. that Glamrock Freddy plush on your desk is adorable)
So, because of how slim the inkling/ocotling's bodies and limbs, this makes so that no matter what weapon their holding, the weapon will always stand out and be easy to recognise because it isn't being covered by the inkling/ocotling's bodies. You'll always be able to see their heads, weapons and gear easily because those were the priorities in the character design. Genius.

Not only does every weapon have a unique shape (with variants of the same weapon having only minor decorative changes), the way an Inkling or Octoling moves while holding (for example) Dualies is immediately distinct from an Inkling with a Slosher.

Splatoon 1 and 2 represented their eras clearly. Splatoon one definitely feels like a Teen's era. Splatoon 2 sorta brushes up on the similar design but fulfills the older teen era. It could just be the fact that the Splatoon series literally lined up with my early teens and is now edging into when I turn 21, but the fashion choices are clearly reflected into the culture change from skateboard rock-chic into punk-pop militaristic. It's always about the theme of rebelliousness. And while I'll definitely outgrow Splatoon eventually, it warms my heart to see this series grow as I do.
How no one caught on that the Viking helm inkling is based off Flavor Flav is beyond me. It’s even more apparent when you realize two of of Pearl and Marina’s outfits are based of Biggie Smalls and Tupac. Someone on the dev team is clearly a fan of 80s-90s American rap/culture.

I don't really know if Splatoon is really iconic, Japan yes, rest of the world, uncertain. And the reason I think that is because of Splatoon's modern-day Japan theme in a post-apocalyptic Japan. I think it would become truly iconic if they swapped the Japan theme for a more Western theme, with an English language soundtrack, but I feel like at the same time it would anger veteran fans and players.
Its a really ethmocentric way of veiwing it. Stuff doesnt need to carter to western english audiences to be seen as iconic. Take sailor moon for example ppl wanted to westernize it but it ultimately failed mostly because peopled loved how new the Anime looked
