I think the Dan Attrell & David Porreeca Picatrix is an awesome version for the academic student VS. the Greer & Warnock version for actual students who want to put this reasoning in to an actual astrological magical practice. Both of these 2 Latin books, along with the fourth coming book from Dr Liana Saif Arabic version book. All of the scholars make this stuff all the better, learning from all of them., and digesting the various nuances from all of these historical teachers.
I have to imagine that once the Arabic translation is complete someone in academia will create a critical edition of the book attempting to reconcile the various differences and lacuna as best they can. That will be a very interesting edition to read. We live in something of a golden age for magick where serious scholarly work is devoted to occult topics. I have to say we are all the better for it. The entire notion of a critical edition of a grimoire would have been laughable just a few decades ago.
All my comments and answers to comments were deleted in the process of transferring all my videos to this new channel :( I'm usually quite good at keeping up with viewer questions, so that's quite a lot of info gone, I'm afraid. If you read a question below that you would like a direct response to, don't hesitate to ask it again, I'm actually quite likely to respond :)
My Picatrix Magic in History book has not suffered any hardback warpage as of late. I bought it on Amazon over a year ago, not any cosmetic damage at all. I truly like both the practical Greer & Warnock version of Picatrix, just like this academic Picatrix. Traditional astrology is challenging to understand & requires commitment for true mastery, a teacher makes it so much easier to understand.
I use bits of it like the Lunar Mansions as add-ons to my folk magic, and I do so using Sidereal astrology rather than Tropical, so it's funny you should say that it can't be used as an addition to ones magic! I have the Greer Warnock paperback and Kindle Liber Atratus edition as well as Warnock's related Kindle books (Mansions of the Moon, Fixed Stars etc)
Hey, of course! And thanks for calling me out on that. A few months down the line, I'm really not sure why I would have said something so baseless! Of course useful elements can be picked out. Proof I'm not always on my A game 😅
I think this comment from Simon Dyda is important. I’ll be buying Lunar Mansions. I don’t understand the “Tropical” comment? Is that a reference to Carribean magick? Any advice is appreciated 🙏
I have this one on my buying list. Whats not to like - a pure translation with a nice introduction. Maybe an annotated one would be more digestible, but a straight translation is awesome (as you say).
Do you feel that it could be fruitful to read the side by side? Taking notes from both for the intent of practical application. Have you checked out the Ouroboros Press edition? I believe the translator for that edition is Hashem Atallah.
Dan Atrell has a UA-cam channel called The Modern Hermeticist (ua-cam.com/users/TheModernHermeticist) which includes an extensive (40+ hours) lecture series titled "Encyclopedia Hermetica: A Big History" as well as podcast-style interviews with various other authors and academics.
The warping of the cover is probably from the glue drying. I would have glued it and pressed it under weight, then glued the next bit and pressed it again till dry. Maybe the type of glue as well?
When I made this mistake, it was the gluing. If you do it by hand, you have to apply the glue and give the cover material some time to absorb the water. Then you attach the material to the cover. When I did it wrong, I was in too much of a hurry and the paper hadn't "relaxed" enough. Once that happened, no amount of pressure could fix it.
I'm arabian guy and I read a lot of arabic books I found a copy of this book in arabic and it HARD to read at all it old arabic that no one use this days and there no paragraphs, just one long line of endless words so many dead words too
Hmm, glad for your video.. On an interesting side note, Dan Attrell has a YT channel called The Modern Hermeticist, I find it very good. Sorry that you didn't like the scholarly version......I'm ordering both versions..just because...cheers!
@@FoolishFishBooks Yes! His channel is amazing! Glad you're open minded and enjoy it as well. We're all questing knights in this world of the arcane, natural and otherwise.
Should I get the illustrated picatrix if I wanted to get more into magic? I really want to practice some more love spells as I just got into them and they surprisingly work. Does it even have love spells in the picatrix? Just wondering
Denis Poisson it’s a publishing company of practical magick similar to the gallery of magick. You should check them out. I really enjoy your book reviews.
Good question. It really depends, I try to read whatever I have to to ensure at least a couple of reviews per week, but sometimes I just want to take my time, like right now I'm reading The Dancing Sorcerer by P T Mistlberger and I'm way too engrossed to read anything else in parallel, so at the weekend I put out a non-review video, and I MAY review an art-book or a children's book mid-week, something that I already know well, or that requires very little preparation time from me, so that I can really take my time and enjoy every word of this one book I'm getting higher-than-usual value from. I hope that makes sense!
00:20 I believe that you misattributed Dan Attrell as a translator on the older edition, rather than Greer. Dr Attrell is of course, translator on the more recent Picatrix. Thanks for the reviews, though. It really helps narrow down the options if one appreciates good books of good books, 😁. Peace, 🙏
Translating is a tricky business isn’t it.... Researching translations can be a thing in itself I found which ironically takes me away from reading the actual texts sometimes.... I often heard of Picatrix, but haven’t really try to really investigate it so far. Thank you so much for this review!
Who would you trust to translate an automotive repair manual from a foreign language? An automotive technician or a linguist? If you actually plan to repair an automobile, you will go for the translation by the technician (i.e.magician). what more needs to be said?
Where the text originated is a slighty nebulous topic, but the Ghayat al-Hakim was probably written in Al-Andalus (Spain) during the 11th century, but some think it may have been earlier. It eventually got a Castillian Spanish translation, which was itself translated into Latin in the 13th century, and this is when it was rechristened as the Picatrix. This version got into the hands of Renaissance thinkers like Marsilio Ficino, etc. The new, direct translation of the Ghayat al-Hakim into English (which has, to my knowledge, never been done before) is worked on by Liana Saif, who also wrote a book about the Arabic influences on early modern esotericism. Interesting stuff!
If the shoe fits, don't be mad it could be a really expensive shoe. I can see a general bias being casted down on scholars as being boring but ita a small price to pay for having all that information
I don’t agree that this is an accurate translation, and I mean that in reference to the actual astrology within the book. For a book about astrological magic, it’s strange that they would not consult professional astrologers when they were actually writing the astrology up and translating those parts. This book is definitely not for a practitioner of astrological magic. It is a shame. Astrology not accurate, the book covers bend strangely... hmm. I kind of wish that I hadn’t bought it.
Well I got the hardback of both of these books and I haven't had any of the problems you've had with yours, so I think you just happened to get a couple of dodgy copies mate.
This is the only channel I can go to for occult book reviews that doesn't try to be super edgy. I appreciate that! Thank you!
Uh, I know, right? Reign of the Dark Fluff 🤣 It really does annoy me!

I ordered the illustrated Picatrix. Can't wait to read it...
I recomend enciclopedia hermetica here on youtube. One of the translators is the owner

I met the academic who worked on the new edition, interesting review!
Well, your reviews of the Picatrix have shown me . . . that there is no nice hardback edition of the Picatrix. Off to get the illustrated paperback.

What do you think about all of the "Cunning Man" books that have come out over the last 15 years??
What is the differences between the illustrated picatrix and the complete picatrix ?

My copy of Peterson's Arbatel warped a bit like that when I left it out
Could you do some reviews on the gallery of magick books?
Denis Poisson are you also familiar with the power of magick books?
Denis Poisson it’s a publishing company of practical magick similar to the gallery of magick. You should check them out. I really enjoy your book reviews.
do you have any reviews on books revolving around the qliphoth?
A book so powerful that even humans created their own versions
Attrells version is my favorite from the latin. I like the bigger index, and i understand the phrasing better.
If the picatrix translated, can I introduce myself, that some bugs are built in. Wanted or unwanted
So i guess i ordered the wrong edition. No fancy pictures :(
Do you tend to read one book through, or go between more than one at a time?
Good question. The fabric is too tight on the board.
You mentioned that there's a Picatrix that's written in Arabic. Are the origins of this book from medieval Arabia?
It's translated by liana Saif..

The illustrated version is rather overpriced.
Sixty three
So all these books are just fun to read? There is no practical application? Practicing Magick and rationalizing it :) ?
