I'm native American (navajo) and I used to watch my great grandma make her skirts and my skirts all by hand. She would hand sew, and measure everything all by hand. I learned to make mine like her. I came across this video, when watching a ribbon skirt making video.
Nice...wow I'm navajo and also remember my grandma making skirts also tearing it as well. I am trying to learn how to make a ma sanii skirt (grandma skirt) for 2 grandmas that come to our church. I pray I can do this.. would love to make them new skirts :)

I have been sewing for many years and only recently getting back to hand sewing doing one of these skirts. I was much too crazy busy and impatient for it in my younger years, but find it therapeutic now. Part Mohawk here, but raised by first generation Sicilians. Lol!

Just caught your comment about "professional seamstress's." Lol, if folks only knew how we did stuff. The "proper" way is the way that works for the person doing the job. Honestly, even after all of the couture training, I still rip, bunch my own pleats/ruffles( the ruffler tears fabric more than not), and common sense is the key. I love your style! Reminds me of my own. I have repaired more store bought junk than I can total. I rarely see self-crafted items for repair. Nuff said! I love watching you sew. Fancy tools do not make one a great sewer. Experience does and you have that in spades. Making without a pattern is a skill only learned by experience. Doncha just love the critics. The challenge is praying for them for they know not what they do. Bless their hearts. One extra note: after 35 years of sewing professionally, pins are from the devil sent to damage fingers. Sewing the wee hem by eye is another skill you just learn by doing. More power to those that pin that mess first, lol. Awesome job!

I did it!!! I found this beautiful tan or beige luxury sheet at my famous thrift store for 2 bucks, worked it up, and it turned out great! Thanks so much for your videos, I also watched the other ones and picked up some tips from those as well. I learned a lot putting the skirt together and got a whole bunch of new ideas to work up. I did decide to make all the tiers on the skirt anyway and quit worrying about looking fat cuz now I'm fat AND comfortable LOL! Thanks and God bless :-)
Lol that's me.. I'm worrying about looking fat with all that fabric and the bulk around my middle. I'm a 36" waist, 5'4" tall. I was wondering if the style would look bad on me
@@crazychicken4063 Make the front (hip to hip) flat (no gathering), push the gathering to the hips and back on your waistband (or first tier) to accomplish this effect. Look into Victorian !!!petticoats!!! and skirts, absolutely all the fullness was on the back, a bit has gathered to the sides but the front of those skirts and dresses were always made Flat! This is a great Starter video but just moving the gathers around and a Victorian esque style we'll probably accomplishthe silhouette you're looking for! Cheers

I want to thank you… after going back and listening in order I have figured out how to make your patchwork skirts… and even though I’m visually impaired and can’t use the machine and and my sr mother wants to help….. I’m doing it slowly by hand… but I’m doing it. Then because I do a lot of canning dehydrating whatever I can because I think it’s very important to have this knowledge and prepare I went back….. I am right now relistening to alot of your videos…. Which pretty much cover all the things I’m interested in from 94 other channels. God bless you and your house
We used to call them "Little House on The Prairie" skirts. My Mom made them all the time with bonnets. I love skirts and dresses and have not worn them as much as I'd liked to.
I too have sewn my life. My Mom used to scold me for cutting doll dresses out of the middle of a piece of fabric. I am so blessed to have been brought up by such an amazing woman.

thank you that was fun. I love to sow too. I started when I was around 13 or 14 on an old non electric machine foot pump My mim thought me and my mom. No patterns butI am legally blind and as I get older my sight is much worse. It is frustrating to use a needle threader in one hand a 7times LED reading device in another hand to thread my machine I love the creative part. But it takes me longer to thread the machine then to make something So frustrating I wish there was a simper way for blind people to thread the needle God has given me so much but I sometimes wish I could see better. Oh my goodness. I have a bunch of sheets I have been accumulating from garage sales and thrift stores for rag rugs that I have been making. I used a few for these skirts. I have made 3 skirts already. All in less than 24 hours. LOL. My husband loves them. He likes me girly. I am not very girly by nature but am really digging the skirts. They will be my everyday wear for sure. Thanks for the inspiration!!! Love watching your videos.

Thanks Heidi, I think this gives people more courage to try simple sewing without all the hoopla of pattern pieces. I have only Grade 8 sewing instruction but used to make all my own clothes, and can alter thrift store finds. Sadly, sewing classes are sometimes negative experiences so your approach would be refreshing and at least people could learn how to operate sewing machines.
I sew exactly the same. I am self taught, and have made most of everything I wear. I wear skirts and dresses only. I hem and do a lot of eyeballing things, and know measurements and such without having to pin and all........but when you sew daily, it becomes easier. I am only 5 ft tall also.
I have to say thank you very much. The skirt that you made Stacy out of blue jeans gave me such a really good idea and something I would really cherish. I have my husband's blue jeans and chambery shirts. I want to make a skirt using these items. 10 by 10 squares is perfect. I love the way you put the seams on the outside. I am a season sore and Have Nots use my sewing machine since his death. This will be my first project and get me started sewing again. The one thing about wearing skirts which I like down to my ankles is you don't have to wear stockings and they look great with tennis shoes. LOL if only the city girls would know this. We have similar sewing styles. I sew for pleasure, and am mostly self taught. I had been teaching myself quilting and stopped when my granddaughter passed last October. This has inspired me to at least get back to sewing…. And start wearing skirts again.

When I was old enough to join 4H I took sewing & won many ribbon at fairs. Then in high school I took sewing & my mother started sewing at a young age also & was very helpful when I’d get stuck.. so to speak lol.

Love it!! You sew just like I do. I wing it, and it usually always works. Always felt like I was not up to par, or lacking compared to others. I know we're not to compare ourselves to others, but to see someone else winging it, is a blessing to me. When someone asks how I do something, including cooking, it's hard to remember what I did.Lol!

God bless you. This video has so many tips and tricks. Last week I tried my first tiered skirt. I watched YT videos but they all worked in the round. (Closing the side seam first.)
They also precut the exact length of each tier and gather it with running stitches.. and lots of pins..
Needless to say, it was laborious.
I love your approach.
I did purchase fabric from a warehouse, so I have generous lengths of fabric.
I will probably tear and sew all the strips together, before making the tiers...
Cheers for the tip on draw strings around the house. We also have dogs and I noticed with my elasticated clothes that they pull down when the dogs jump up.

Great video and I loved watching you sew. By hook or by crook, as my mom would say and they way I sew too. You and I have the same treadle cabinet - except yours is a lovely green. Love, love, love my old singer treadle. A tip to share (not a pro by any means) that I came up with one day repairing the draw string on a hoodie. Tie a simple knot of your yarn around the hook end of a crochet hook, then slide the non-hook end into the drawstring pocket hole and draw it through. You can gather it through quite fast. The longer the crochet hook, that faster it goes. It works for pulling elastic through as well. Thank you for sharing your skirt lesson!

That's exactly how I do projects like that! In our old town, there was a library book I checked out all the time which was called "Slapdash Sewing." I love that name, and that's how I sew. Cut corners and find ways to skip steps and you can throw things together really fast, lol. I kinda wondered about leaving the raw seams on the outside, but it's cute!!
I only did the raw edges on the outside on this and a navy skirt, it was a fun for a change but I prefer having them on the inside which is how I do most of my skirts. Slap Dash Sewing - that does sound like a great name. If I was to write a sewing book, I would call it "Fly by the Seat of Your Pants Sewing" HAHAHA

You make gathers look easy! Lol. I tried last year to make a gathered petticoat as a winter buffer, and it was just a mess. It was such a pain to try to pin it all, and I didn't realize that the guideline I was using didn't have enough tiers, so it looked really stupid under my long skirts, and I just didn't want to fool with trying to make a new tier at the bottom. My husband bought a kingsized blanket that has been sitting in my closet because he didn't realize that it was essentially 2 sheets sewn together with a pocket to add batting.....or something, so I'm going to rip the two layers apart and make skirts out of it since I seem to have been binge watching you all afternoon.

With this covid crisis, We bought a farm, starting a homestead and I will now do my own skirts ... like this! I absolutely 🤎 L-O-V-E 🤎 your new Frontier skirt! My mom showed me how to use her sewing machine when I was 12. Most of the clothes I wore as a teenager were home-made by me. I've been sewing and/or remodeling clothes ever since.💗
The funny thing is this video is five years old so it is not new anymore but I do still wear it, however, I have had to patch it here and there since it was made to be a work skirt and has had a LOT of wear, haha
This is great! Thank you for showing us how you made yours. I sure am kicking myself for letting go of my treadle machine. Still, I'm happy to have what I do. As for those who want to critique you, they are just bored and want to step on your joy and kindness. Let it go and ignore it. I've been sewing for over half my life and rarely look at patterns, use pins, or even a sewing machine! I tend to lap sew. It may take a very long time, but my pieces are much prettier and far more unique. I am inspired by your shirt, and those great ones you make for Stacy, to do a few of my own. My favorite patch skirt is in need of similar hanging buddies. LOL. Thank you again for the great share.

I am hand sewing myself a skirt from a homemade cushion cover I made a few years ago that got a rip in it. I had to repurpose the beautiful fabric and this is the perfect project for it. The hand sewing is therapeutic for me these days from time to time. I’m playing with using thin strips I had left over for the casing and the hem. I like a wider hem.
I still make skirts like that but I start from the bottom up. That's how my mom and grandma taught me. I'm navajo too

love you, thank you for doing things simple, i just got so inspiret by you, that i am going to make a skirt like this out of a bed sheet , i have for long time, its white with ants printet on it , and i love your sewing machine, i use a old singer hand sewing machine , or an oldie that have been my grandmas, i have been sewing my own clothes since i was 12 , and i am 50 now, and still make my own clothes, i love to wear skirts, , god bless and thanks for sharing

(I made purses, garments, etc and had to do so because I am tall) I LOVE how interesting your life is. Again, Thank You for sharing
Thank you Cindy! I am short with an Italian shape so it can be hard to find attire that fits me the way I like so making my own is best, made better, and very frugal. To buy a skirt like this would cost about $45 or more.
I also made up a homemade dress pattern. I find it comfortable and just what I want. It doesn't matter what some "professional"says. I am the one wearing it, buying materials and making it- for under $20. I plan to try your pattern. It looks loose and comfortable- thanks for the video.
I LOVE that skirt and the way you did it! I almost thought you were going to show how to make it a "tie top" skirt at first. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around a way to to do that rather than drawstring. I'm totally making your skirt soon as I find a spot for my sewing machine and pull it from storage!

Skirts like these are hard to find these days but I did find that black one I was talking about and can be seen in my ground cherry video on Amazon for only $25 (which is reasonable considering the amount of fabric though somewhat cheaply made). Comes in a ton of colors and sizes
Yeah.. I have found that even fluffy girl sizes are pretty expensive... but alas.. Amazon still hates us over here... LOL guess I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and learn to sew and make em myself... LOL

Sometimes when I try to do the patchwork skirts with the raw edges out, it gets REALLY confusing! haha

Love the skirt. I've taken many sewing classes in high school, but I measure & sew like you by eyeballing the distance with markings on my machine. You learn what works & use it to save time & always get pro results because you already know what an inch or 3 looks like.

I've made skirts like this, more fancy and with different patterned layers, but I like watching this one for learning a new way to go about it. I've made lots of stuff from bedsheets, but this is a new and great idea.
The funny thing is I spent 28 years making costumes with skirts of all kinds for our dance performances but it was only a few years ago I started designing and making my own skirts. I started selling my skirts not long after I came out with this video and my most popular one is my patchwork skirt and I have videos on how I do that. Yay, I love your method. I'm a floor sitter too. Stepped out of my anti social zone and bought mats for cutting off of craigslist and I never use them! My baby sits on one while he paints =D

Heidi I must thank you so much for this method. I have just got all my tiers sewn and I'm so happy with it and so excited! My husband loves it too and said it's a pity I didn't know about it years ago. I'll use top and bottom of the sheet for casing and a tie so I will have used pretty much the whole sheet.
