The late 90s to early 00s really do just exist in this weird bubble. I've always found it hard to explain why the aesthetic is so appealing, I suppose it mainly comes down to nostalgia. The warm colours, jazzy DnB, PS2/PS1/Dreamcast gameplay, it just gives me these vivid memories of living in that old inner city apartment with my parents. No worries, nothing but music, games and a cool, relaxed bit of light pouring in through the balcony window as the sun sets.
I can’t speak for everyone obviously, but growing up in the United States, that era represents the last time things felt OK. That twilight before 9/11 forced me to grow up and see the worst the world could offer. There’s a safety in those memories I never felt again.
Yeah it’s something I noticed as well, on the cusp of the millennium everything went to shit, 9/11, the War on Terror, the Y2K scare, it comes across as the last ray of sunshine before things got really bad.
The 90s/early 2000s were a good blend of new technology and social interaction. The internet was just starting to grow, and people didn't spend 99% of their time on social media. Political beliefs did not influence a person's personality as much as they do now. Game developers had fewer restrictions on their ideas. All of this being said, don't let nostalgia or a desire to live in the past keep you from living now. Find a skill or something you care about and pursue it. Escapism will only last for so long.
That's what's great about coming back to videos like this that remind me of those early days. It gives me a chance to take a break and reflect on those nostalgic memories. Time moves on however and though I miss the days of my childhood it really makes me think of how far I've come since then. Work, college, friends, family, things have worked out for the best but there's always that longing for a time when things were simpler.
I saw the thumbnail and clicked immediately.. I’m old school (clearly) never heard of a thing called Google image :-) My wife pulled up the game Oni and man, this song track list I cried. You made a grown man cry.
I'll probably have more to say later, but review from man who just woke up and stumbled across this/you plopped randomly in the middle of a recommended list youtube gave me for symphonic metal bands he was scrolling through while sitting on the toilet to look for morning music Perfect vibes for this morning. 5/5 will listen to everything else you have today. Probably shouldn't have used "plopped randomly" along with the sitting on the toilet admission, but it is what it is.
Clicked for the Oni thumbnail, stayed for the tunes. This music is awesome man plus I don't think I've ever seen anyone reference Oni before; one of my favorite games from my childhood.
Never forget getting my first hifi for xmas and having the playstation with RCA out. TOCA was the first thing I loaded and just listened to this track on repeat for an hour. Never forget the smile on my dads face when he came in and saw how utterly stoked I was. This track will forever be imprinted on my mind.
Everytime I start vibing to this-- BOOM commercial, so I gotta stop what I'm doing completely find my phone and skip the add, then try and find my flow again. Cmon friend, space em out more or give us a donation link
Heh. A huge shit eating grin snuck onto my face with that PS2 start up sound and the little menu. And Even the TRACK PLAYING overlay! Wooo. Haha. Nice. And, of course, the music selection is rad. :D
OHHH SHITTTTT!!!! Dude you are my fav DnB producer right now....I love your ambient stuff too on Delivery Boy 2099....but Level Select and the Low Poly Breaks series are amazing. So Stoked for this!!!!!
Mad how just a mix can take on a whole vibe of a different time. I was glad I got to be a teenager and into games, the whole y2k bubble was exciting and optimistic. The perfect mix of reality and digital. Great mix btw, sick beats that even at 33 sound fresh and exciting.
I love your mixes, I listen to them when I'm writing, they help me focus whilst not being distracting. They make me think back on being a teenager in the late 90s / early 2000s in the sanctuary of my old bedroom playing my video games. I think video game music these days is often far too "overcooked" I think would be how I'd describe it. The old school ambient DNB of the millenium era games was as special as the range of titles and genres that were available back then. Just games being games, no bullshit. I hope there is a sort of resurgence to that style from indie devs in the next few years.
Fun fact - this music is specifically designed for that, it's designed so that during the games where it's being played, it's providing a good backdrop while not distracting from the gameplay itself. Genius imo
Hey dude I just wanted you to know that I adore your music and I'm super stoked for any new release you put out LEVEL SELECT is such an absolute banger of an album, thank you for all you do
these mixes are just magic. the extra production you add in, the transition, the visuals, everything. transports me to another world. thank you so much for these, gonna be sure to check out all of your music as well.
Listening to this I figured out that when Tetris thingies start to fall quicker, it is as if the Tetris guy becomes angrier with you and want you to lose. haha
I remember playing tank racer while getting electrophoresis at home from visiting doctor after fracturing the feet. it was a pc port on one of them multi-games cds, it had the music cut out. It's a surprise to learn the game had a cool music
One night, i mustve been 5 or 6 or 7 years old. I woke up in the middle of the night. Couldnt even gueds what time really. I walked into the living room to feed my video game addiction & boom. A new game sitting atop my ps2 slim. (I had it under a chair with a box tv ontop of the chair) Sonic? I dont rlly like sonic but also I have no idea where this thing came from. Needless to say that was my first fever dream. This reminds me of that
When Track 10 started playing, I felt like I was warped back to a time when life was simple for me. Just me, my PS2 and MGS2. Thank you for the amazing playlist. I'll sub no hesitation. Edit: Didn't expect Track 11. TOCA 2 was my favorite racing game on the PS1. Thank you again for reawakening my old, happy memories.
ONI is one of the BEST games ever made. I think I've replayed it in full 25+ times. I love it so much I don't know why. I think I'm gonna replay it soon
Terrific vibe with high quality tracks. The mixing, crossfading, and visuals are fabulous. Love the use of the PS2 CD playback GUI. Thank you for making this work of art.
I didn't even study, I relaxed to this before studying lol! thank you for the nostalgic overdose. Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 both are the best games in the series for me, I say both since they complement each other in my opinion. I like to treat them like one compiled game. :)
The vibe of this channel is exactly what i need - Cool DNB and retro game visuals.

It's weird being in 2023 and now this futuristic music is nostalgic, primarily because the future is a hilarious dystopia
there i was, wanting flying cars and pointy sky scrapers, when our real future was poverty and war
Catching a shark really hits different with great DnB
Blud just casually implied he catches shark daily like it's nothing, love it.
LFG! ONI is getting recognition.
where is its music featured in the mix? Couldn't find it in the tracklist.
Yeah, feel a bit baited by there not being one tune.
More oni content in general pls, def would have fit in with this list
For real I loved that game
Classic early release ps2 game.
My cousin's husband had let me and my brother borrow his PS2 with Oni, which then led me to Ghost in the Shell and cyberpunk art, so dope.
Bro, at the start when it was like: POV: your listening to a CD on your (insert old video game console here), so cool
The final track particularly ace.
When MGS2 came on at 32 minutes I lost my shit. Fits perfectly with these early 2000s grooves.
thanks! such a great track. it was right under my nose the whole time
@@pizzahotline_ Any chance you could do an edit of it? This is one of my favorite tracks ever, and I'm kind of curious to hear your take on it.
@@Slump92 that's an interesting idea. I'll see what I can do :)
Yeah

Knocked it out of the park, again!
pizza hotline changed my life
i loved the music player interface on PS1, thanks for bringing it back
Ps2 not ps1
This video reminds me Game One channel from France. I had watched on the end of 90s via satellite❤
The edited PS2 start up screen is so good. Love it!
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate acknowledgement of Oni.
i love the aesthetic on the bottom, as if the PS2 is playing the audio cd. fonts on point as well.

Haha. Love it, a great comment. Thanks so much and stoked you like the tunes,n
Oni was a cool game. The only anime based game made by rockstar
Oni was only published by Rockstar. It was developed by Bungie, which is even crazier!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ALL THESE RETRO GAMES AND DNBs! My new favourite trend.
Lots more to come be sure to sub 🍕💙
That TOCA 2 main menu theme was out of control. always been a favourite. Fair play on these visuals by the way, theyre proper atmospheric.

Anna Kournikova's Smash Court Tennis OST had absolutely ZERO reason to go that crazy.
