I had a mason friend look at my foundation and he told me it would need to be completely remade. I would need to remove 1/3 of my foundation at a time and pour a concrete foundation.
The project would have costed me 100.000$ but I looked at the house built in 1889. The outer walls of the timberframe had no sag or lean in them, so apart from the foundation looking bad it couldn't really be so bad. I started looking into it and searching youtube. Long story short I found your channel 4 years ago and this summer marks the end of my work on the outside of the foundation. Replaced the windows and doors, made it watertight, made it pretty. I started the inside now and I ran into my first real problem, a ton of plumbing is in my way on one of the walls. How would you proceed in your "no big deal" way.

Highly impressive watching the transformation from distressing to attractive. When applying the mortar, sometimes you apply with the rectangular trowel, sometimes the triangular,; sometimes you feed the triangular with the rectangular, sometimes vice versa.I expect you do it unconsciously but I doubt it's insignificant.

Hi Mike. We are using your videos as a guide for repairing our old stone foundation up here in Canada. I am trying to get the same consistency to my mortar mix as you, how much water should I add? Are you using 1 full bucket then adding more as needed? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi, I show how I mixed it in each episode, I usually just add water till I get the right consistency, thanks Mike

You are awesome Mike, but I will have to light a candle and pray for that hatchet.
Just curious- in a future video can you explain how you decided the 1/2 s mortar and half Portland? Would love to know the story there.

Hey Mike, have you ever poured a 6" concrete layer around an old stone foundation?
Because it pushes our the bottom sill i guess you could taper it?

Hi Zick, I never had, if I am reading you right, if it's a water problem it's usually bad rain gutters and the land is not pitched away from the house, I never seen a band of concrete fix that, thanks Mike

You add straight Portland (100%) cement to the S mortar (66% Portland/33% Lime) to boast the overall ratio of Portland cement of your mortar mix to get a harder mortar?

Hi Richard, the old timers didn't have the new bag mixes where you just add water, so even today I use my own recipe, I add the sand, mortar and Portland as I see fit, if I am using a bag mix where you just add water I might add a little Portland for strength, but everything depends on the situation, thanks mike

I'm surprised with the finish there. It did hide all lumps n bumps really well and it probably would have cost twice as much for a smooth finish render....nice work, peace to ya.

I repaired a similar foundation with your methods here. I did this in early Fall of 2020.
Looking at one wall now, where the mortar went on thinner, there are now thin cracks where there were not last year. Should I wet area and apply a coat over these areas? Will this fill in the very small cracks and fortify it better? I plan on painting over this area in the next 8 months.
Thanks. I've learned a lot from these vids and I tell others about your channel.

Hi Apex,, they are probably just shrinkage cracks, I usually wet it first and sponge some cement in and then paint it later on, thanks mike

At the prep stage, would you say its the right thing to do would be to hose or blow out all the loose old mortar and leave whatever doesn't hose or blow out?

So I'm pretty much doing the same thing. But i have a few qeustions,
My first question is, i dont have portland cement, but i do have portland stright from the bag. Would this work just as fine on the first pass over for the "glue"? Or is just putting water on before with a spayer work judt fine? Only asking because ive just been sparying water, but aeeing this with the portland as cement makes me wonder if i need to do that?
As for the masonary cement, would regular type "s" mortar work? And then usually add a few scoops of portland with sand. (Its not a big batch) Any help would be much appreciated. Starting to get into this trade and this video really helped!

Hi, every situation is different, I have a video out called " lime, mortar or portland " what should I use and on all my other foundation videos I show what I used in each circumstance, I would not over think it, do a few samples and start where it is least seen, wait a couple days and see how it is turning out, thanks Mike
