    • What is fatty liver? Is it common?
    Normally less than 5% of liver has fat. Excessive accumulation of fat in liver is called fatty liver disease. As per studies, upto 35% of Indians have fatty liver. Fatty liver is common but not normal! Around 10-20% of people with fatty liver progress to develop a condition called liver cirrhosis which is irreversible. Some of them may end up with liver cancer as well •What are the causes? Obesity/ over weight, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, sedentary life style and certain drugs are the common causes • What are the symptoms?
    Mostly, it doesn’t show any symptoms. However once it progresses to liver cirrhosis which is irreversible, it causes symptoms like abdominal pain, abdominal distension, leg swelling, blood vomit/ black stools, altered consciousness and others. What tests are done?
    Usually ultrasound scan is done. Once fatty liver is noted, further assessment is done by doing a special test called fibroscan. Apart from this certain blood tests are done. If needed CT/ MRI scan will be done in select group of patients
    How to treat/ prevent fatty liver disease? It’s a life style related disease. Hence healthy life style is recommended. Following are common recommendations:
